Default More College BS - Ive been 'dismissed'

So I guess from going 3 times and not fiinshing Ive been dismissed from this college... lame. I just found out today when I went to register for classes.

I have an appointment with a councelor next Wednesday... what does this MEAN? Will they let me go back?! What difference does it make if I finish or not when IM paying THEM? argh... so frustrated...

It matters because they want to turn out a certain kind of graduate - sort of the same as they kick you out of certain programs if you fail to maintain a certain average, and can kick you out if you start failing everything. Good news is there will usually be some appeal procedure. Check the student handbook to see what you have to prepare, and check the secondard round of appeal - like where you can appeal if your appeal is denied.

^^Yeah, if you can prove there are special circumstances (or make something up...you know) then I'm sure you can win an appeal. That's why the process is in place. They may not want every damn student doing it, but a nice young lady who just happened to had endured some kind of hardship...surely they could make an exception

Pretty much if you screwed up when you were young and didn't finish, and then you want to go back later when you're older they'll give you another chance. Keep in mind that it'll likely be your last one, though.

It's not uncommon; my first semester of grad school, a girl was booted from the program because she wrote a single midterm paper that was subpar (graded less than a B+). And she paid $16K upfront for that semester...

A thought: Did you get "dismissed" or suspended? I can't register for university classes anymore either just because I disappeared for too long and they considered me inactive. If you're suspended, that's their way of saying that you're not comin' back, ever. There's a difference.

If you sort of disappeared on them, they might've just changed you to 'inactive' status, hence the visit with the counsellor to become 'active' again.

Dismissed = expelled. honestly I was curious how you were enrolling with all those F's. I just figured you were already accepted and getting ready to register. Don't despair yet! Find out the appeals process and go through the motions. As mentioned above, be prepared to explain what the extenuating circumstances in your life were at the time, how you've matured, what you've accomplished since then, and what your specific future goals are. It is possible they will readmit you conditionally although you will surely be placed on academic probation.

by the way - on the "making something up" front - be prepared to offer evidence. You need proof of hospital stays, hospital stays of family members, death certificates, documentation of divorce, doctor's letters etc. If you can't prove it, they will likely not accept it - so for all those things that can't be proved, you are likely just screwed.

Boston University; no grade inflation there, unlike those crimson pansies across the Charles...

I had a friend go to a counsellor and cry, telling her about her cocaine abuse. I guess other things too. She was a real mess. The counsellor had her exempt from exam period, and she didn't have to write those exams for another SIX months.

I mean, she WAS a mess, and she DID have a note from her doctor (which she showed me, thinking it hilarious, and not...kind of sad) that basically said "this girl is not functionally sane".

So...you can create 'problems', but I mean, that obviously has a whole whack of other repercussions.

I only bring it up because I was pretty surprised that they gave her so much leeway after she broke down crying and said she had a drug problem. They didn't even read the doctor note. I mean, this might just be my school, with its vaguely disguised Catholic history (confess your secrets and you're saved!!).

Ill just go in Wednesday and see what happens. I did some research.
"I got a letter saying I've been dismissed. I want to stay in school. What can I do?"

Dismissal comes after three consecutive semesters of work below 2.0 grade-point average, or two consecutive semesters under a 1.0 grade point average. We can help you come to terms with what caused this level of performance and draw up a plan for recovery. In that plan, you can list the positive steps you will take to make yourself more successful in the future. In particular, you will want to agree to services offered here that could strengthen your skills as a student. You also will want to make clear that you will limit work hours and other commitments outside of school, or stay below a certain number of units. Your plan may be accepted by the Associate Dean of Admissions and Records, who reviews all appeals of dismissal.

Otherwise, you must sit out one semester before you return, and will be on probation when you do so.
That last line is what gets me - I havent gone since 2005... Ive been out 1 semester so Im going to assume I meet with a councelor and will be put on probation. Thats nice because then I dont have to go through appeals and should be on the right track.

The bottom line is you have to keep your grades up no matter where you attend, regardless if you are paying for it or not. Imagine the medical or law school student who has over $100,000 in loans out and is dismissed in their final year for either an academic violation, or poor grades. They still have to pay back the loans albeit with no degree. Besides that, being able to tansfer in your final year is almost impossible. I have friends who went to law school, paid for it, graduated and were never able to pass the bar.....what a waste.
