    Default Car Insurance Question

Alright, help me settle a disagreement.

Boyfriend says that he can drive my car, which is uninsured at the moment, and if anything happens, his insurance will cover it, since he is insured. I refuse to drive my car or let anyone else drive it until it is insured.

If you drive in an uninsured car and get caught, your car can be taken to the impound on the spot I believe or get a hefty fine. Unless your car is on his insurance policy, they will not cover it.

I believe he's thinking about people's coverage on policies. Who ever is listed on your policy can drive THAT car and be covered, but if a car has no insurance and is not listed on the other driver's policy, it's just like you driving it uninsured.

Also they can suspend your registration without car insurance as well, at least I know in AZ they could.

I'll do some research though, so don't quote me.

Here's an article about the vehicle registration suspension law passed in CA

About driving an uninsured car in CA:

    (snip)
"The teen and his mother should not drive a vehicle if it is not insured. The penalties for being cited for driving without insurance in California may include fines up to $500 plus penalties, impoundment of the vehicle and suspension of the driver's license. If the vehicle is impounded the owner will have to pay for all storage and tow charges as well." (snip)

I just asked R and he said that there are so many exceptions and such you never really know what will happen until the situation happens. So basically, tell him to just not drive the car. Don't chance it.

If your car is uninsured, I would think the insurance he has will cover his liability if he hits someone, but not any damage that might happen to your car. I certainly wouldn't risk it.

Car insurance companies can try to work you over any time they can. So if something happens, you might be fighting tooth and nail to get things straightened out. Don't risk it. Doesn't he have a car?

Yes, he has a car, but he works and I need transportation to go see a doctor. He can ride to work with his cousin (who lives close by), but since he works 2 jobs, I can only use his truck on days where he is only working his day job.
