    Default Internet question

I'm running two PC's from one monitor. One PC is old and crappy and is running Windows XP, the other one is new and running an early version of Vista. I used to have the old PC hooked up to the internet, but then it started crashing a lot so I moved the internet cable from the old one to the new one. I can connect either computer to the internet just by swapping the modem cable.

For some reason though, the internet on the old computer runs really fast, but on the new computer, certain pages load really slowly and I have no idea why. For example, SW loads in a second on the old PC, but on the new one it takes up to two minutes to load the forum front page. MySpace, Facebook and Google all load at the same speed on both, but heaps of sites on the new one take aaaages to load. Pictures seem to take a long time to load on the new one too.

Does anyone have any idea why it does this, or what settings I'd need to change to fix it?

Perhaps you have Stripperweb in cache on the old computer, so it does not need to get all the graphics from the web, and maybe on the new computer your browser is set to empty the cache every time you log off.

    What browser are you using?

    Firefox on both of them.

Oh, but even when I don't log off and leave the browser window open, it still takes ages for stuff to load so I don't think it's the cache. Like I can go to SW and it'll take aaaages, then go to MySpace, and come back to SW in the same window and it takes aaaages again. I can't even load Youtube on the new one either.

That might be it. Also, what kind of firewall are you running? You may have picked up unwanted spyware or adware on the newer one. Did it used to load quickly?

If it's spyware or adware, try the programs SpyBot Search & Destroy and AdAware. Both are free and can be found on google.

Firefox ought to load fast. That's what I use (on a Mac, though). I've avoided Vista so far, so I I have no help for you there.

Could it be bandwidth? Maybe there is a lot of traffic when it is loading slowly, and less when it is faster, and it is just coincidence which computer you are using?

Do you have the same virus protection software on both?

This is pretty much the first time I've ever run the internet on this PC, so it's unlikely that I've picked up any Spyware. Before this I used it purely for design work.

Doubt it, because I can move back and forth between the two rapidly and the same problem occurs.

You can't go anywhere with a PC without picking up spyware and adware. I purge my PC of it every day.

I have not really tried Vista yet and we are just starting to test our applications on it. I am curious, have you tried IE yet? Does it load just as poorly?

    Check this out...

I couldn't make sure sense of this. If you mean early, as in a beta version of Vista, then it's junk and you need to run a current version with the latest patches. Works fine for me with Firefox or IE.

The difference between XP and Vista is that in XP, even with Adblocker and Parental controls etc etc etc, they are at browser levels, even in ie7. So Firefox and such generally bypass them.

Now they're part of the OS. Which means everything is going through it.

I'd check for any third party antivirus/spam filters as well.

Also, when you plugged in your cable, a network profile wizard came up, did you configure that? That could have told you some of the filtering options too (I know, sounds like a bitch, but really this allows you to take your laptop to umpteen different networks and have different network settings/firewall/filtering options for each)

You could check if it's a problem with the browser or the network by pinging some server.
Click "Start", "Run...", enter "command" and press enter.
Enter at the command line "ping -n 5 www.google.com" and press enter.
Compare the results on both your systems.

no no, i don't think XP is crappy, it's just that the computer with XP is sooo clogged up with shit and is in serious need of formatting.

    OIC

I'm just in the mindset that Microsoft is taking over the world and when they think it's ready for everyone to convert to Vista or whatever other new crap they put out, we will all HAVE to because nothing will work on our computers if we don't. Resistance will be futile!!
