    Angry Roadkill

So i was having a late night drive last night down the country roads and i see big lump in the road, i swerve to miss it and get out of the car to find its a DOG!
It was a big golden retriever, couldve been somebody's pet. I was in tears.
How could anyone not know they have hit something like that??!!

As a avid dog lover that is as bad as hittin a person in my pov
They didnt even have the decency to move it off the road. Had to get the bf to drive me home as i was so distraught.
Sorry i jsut wanted to rant

That sucks. I've seen kitties a few times and I just hate it. Theres a farmhouse down the road (and we live on a windy narrow road) that lets one of the dogs just run around everywhere, hes always in the road and it makes me so mad! Don't they even realize how easy it is for someone doing 40-45mph to come around that corner where they live and ugh. So irresponsible. Sorry to thread jack it just made me think of that, he's even out at night sometime, I always have to be so careful.
I'm sorry you had to see that.

My bf hit a dog one time, pulled over and carried the dog from house to house to find the owner, and was almost in tears himself. I hate it when people just leave animals there, they should have the decency to own up to it and apologize to the owners, if they can find them. If not, bury it somewhere or move it into the bushes or something.

I HATE any animal killed on the road!

I wear mine on my car now.

Also have a "I BRAKE FOR SNAKES" bumper sticker on my Mustang now, people laugh...but i see too many people go out of their way to run over any animal...SICK!

People may laugh, but it's TRUE!

I think it's the same reason those come into the club and belittle us. Power. They just suck at life and they need to feel in control of SOMETHING, ANYTHING. And that's how they do it.

Also, there's this one Chief who explained things to me. Man is a natural hunter. But we no longer hunt. We still have our instincts, but nothing to do with them. Sooner or later, our instincts come out and we harm with no reason, and we kill for fun. Now we start killing eachother, our instincts have nowhere to go.
I think this might be true. Some people can think and reason past instincts, but some just act on them. And they need to be taught some lessons about life.

oh wow... a golden retriever??? not cool.... and here i thought the thread was going to be about some unfortunate rabid squirrel or something. i mean, not that a squirrel deserves to die, but there's something about domesticated animals as roadkill that is rather unsettling.

Well, deer are another matter altogether. At least where I live, they seem to hang out in the wooded areas next to the road, get spooked by a coming car, and then actually jump in front of it at the last second. I hit (got hit by?) a deer this way going 65 on a major highway (mopac and barton skyway!) and didn't even have a chance to brake before collision. All I remember is a flash of brown. I was driving a Miata; it totalled the car I don't think its a matter of driving skill, I can't think of any way it could have been avoided. Just wrong place wrong time.

Seeing the dead deers makes me so very sad. We drive on alot of back woodsy roads and they hang our right on the side of the road. Now if its safe to stop I yell at them to get back in the woods. I just think they are so beautiful.. We saw a dead dog the other day and I was horrified and I couldn't get over it all day. My husband can't stand to see a dog hurt or dead, he will cry.

That's great your BF had the time to go that effort, but I think its far and beyond the call of duty to expect that of everyone. Understand that usually when someone is driving, they're trying to get somewhere, and may not have time to attend to the animal, or in the case of a busy road, it may not be safe to do so.

I happened to hit a small dog last month while on vacation. It was at night in the middle of a busy street in a city that I was unfamiliar with and as upset as I was about hitting it, there was simply no way I could have attended to it without the risk of being hit myself, and even if I had been able, fifty other drivers likely would have hit the dog by then.

And call me a bit mean, but if a domesticated animal who is somebody's property (whether it be a pet or livestock) is hit out on the road, thats the owner's fault for allowing it to wander into danger, not the fault of the driver who hits it.

Umm, thats simply silly. I've met some deranged people from time to time, but I don't know of anyone who goes out to hit animals with their car, or even relishes the opportunity when it comes about. In almost every instance, they simply didn't have time to react, or did their best to avoid it if there was an opportunity. Which brings me to the deer subject...

And what do experts suggest when a deer jumps out in front of you? Don't swerve, and if you have to hit the deer so be it. That's right. Its better to hit the deer head on than swerve and possibly hit something else head on, like say a tree, a telephone pole or worse yet another car. Unlike a hard stationary object, or something moving at high speed in the opposite direction, the deer will give.

Road kill makes my stomach churn too (particularly when you tell that it was someone's pet), but its really nobody's fault. Its simply the unfortunate result of a bad intersection of mankind and nature.

Oh, I've had the pleasure of knowing some sicko's, and they do go after animals. If they see something dead on the road, they think it's funny, and if something walks in front of them in a parking lot or side road, they've gone right ahead to try and hit it. and, when they get drunk, it's way worse.

I do agree, when it's owned by someone, yes, the owner is liable, it should be locked up, and in some cases, it's just an accident, our old dog would break his chain almost every day, I have no idea how he did it, but he was a dangerous dog to other pets (we ended up putting him down), if he got hit by a car, it happens.

And deer, they hurt, they can kill people, like moose. Man, you can hit a moose with a rig, it will still total it, and the damn moose will still walk away and not blink. They're wild for a reason, you can't control them and yes, you don't know when they're about to flip out and run into you.

Yeah they do that sometimes. I was with my bf and a deer literally ran into the side of his truck.

Doesn't have anything to do with driving skills, although people around here surely do need to learn how to fucking drive.

It's rutting season in our area. Deer are on the move and they don't watch where they're running. The bucks have one thing on their minds - doe pussy. They are chasing does all over - often right into traffic. Our area is WAY overpopulated with deer. You can be driving along and they come out of nowhere - and people simply cannot react in time to miss them. I'm seeing 2-3 fresh roadkills on 70 every day. I could tell you some deer stories........

oh god me too! It was the strangest thing, the deer was like racing my car I guess to try and cross the road in front of me and ran into my left fender. wtf? At first I was horrified because I could see in my rearview it all splayed out. Luckily it was just stunned and got back up and then ran off into the woods.

I met a guy once who would swerve out of his way to hit animals in the road (I was even in the car freaking out on him.) That friendship did not last long.

it amazes me how people can be so distraught about seeing dead deer, dogs, cats etc killed in the road, but don't blink when they see a dead animal on their plate.

    it's the same thing.

the other day i was at the park and a snake was slithering across the pavement with tons of suv's coming by so i stood in the middle of the road and directed the cars around him (he was pretty big) and stood behind him stomping so he'd get out of the way faster

in my old suburban neighborhood in florida where the speed limit is 15, I saw a freshly killed and still warm deer on the side of the road and pulled over to sit next to it. it was really sad, some idiot driver was being reckless and needlessly and carelessly killed her, it was a doe, a young one.

No I'm sorry but it's not the same to me. I think being a vegetarian is wonderful and wish I had so much self control, but I hate the "you can't be sad about the dead animal because you ate a burger!" thing. I don't eat peoples pets either and I do have a heart despite the fact that I eat meat.

Your snake story reminds me of the big snapping turtle my friend and I had to kinda push of the road with a stick.

That's how it was where I usto live up north. They are so stupid in that aspect they will jump in front of the car and there are SO many of them. If you live in an area like that for any prolonged period of time the odds are that you will eventually hit one, especially at night.

The thing that really pisses me of are people that hit them and just keep going. I know alot of people that carry guns in their cars for the simple fact that if they do hit one and not kill it they can shoot it so it doesn't have to suffer. It doesn't sound nice but it is a hell of alot better than to leave them suffering in pain.

I'll admit it. I often cry when I see roadkill. At the very least, I get tears in my eyes. I hate the idea of those poor animals suffering.

Me too. It makes me so sick.

I have never hit anything, thank god, and I really wish more people would try to avoid animals in the road.
