She argued that ADD doesn't exist.

WTF?? I mean, I have ADD and I know for sure it does. There was this dancer I met last night and she argued with me for 20 minutes about it. Telling me that b/c they told me I had it when I was a kid, that I've carried that into my adult life and that's why I do things so differently. I was like what? Um, no. ADD falls under the fragile X syndrome which also houses autism and aspergers, so, how is that bullshit?

Who else has argued with you over a disorder that you know is true and that you might have, yet they think it's all bullshit? I mean, I've been fired from jobs because of it. I know it's discrimination, but, when you're fired for "not learning fast enough", you can't do anything about it.
    What do you think?

I am not going to say this to sound mean or negative, but just as a thought...
And this is not directed at you either =)

Some people don't think things like ADD don't exist because too many people use it as an excuse for poor behavior. I think people are told they have ADD most of the time because pharmacies want to make money off of people.

I think ADD does exist but it is far more rare than most people think. Just because a person is told they have ADD doesn't mean they really do.

I think only a person who has truly has ADD will be able to know compared to a doctors word.

I agree, she is ignorant. Sadly, much of the world still blaims biological issues like ADD on everything but biology (i.e., they blaim it on will power, demons, witchcraft, the devil, and so on... everything but what it is, a treatable biological chemical imbalance really no different then diabetes, thyroid imbalance, etc.)

p.s. I have no doubt that ADD is mis or overly diagnosed by some doctors, but to say it does't exist it all is, well, ignorant. Sorry.

Put me in the skeptic column for lot of that stuff. Behavior wise, I probably have it.

Maybe the dumb bitch (and any other naysayers) would like to peruse the tons of freaking research I had to wade through this past summer for the ad campaign of a popular ADD drug?

It's not a rare disorder. It might be overly diagnosed by doctors, but it's not rare.

Personally, I think that (a) some parents are so overstressed that they go to the doctor wanting to know why their child is so hyper, when he's being just that; a child and they just don't/can't deal with it or (b) some doctors are just too busy/ lazy and don't do enough research on the child's history/background.

The problem is, people without these disorders really can't fathom what it is like to have one's brain chemistry be out of balance or how draining it is to fight their bodies, in much they same way they can't fathom what it would be like to on the verge or fainting or seizure due to having one's glucose levels being off balance. However, they lack of their ability to fathom it still does absolutely nothing to 1.) actually help those with a chemical imbalance, and 2.) it really requires no effort to believe it's all in someone else's head, while it does take a tremendous effort for individuals with chemical imbalances to intellectually fight what their body is feeling.

I had people tell me bipolar doesn't exist--my sister is bipolar and I have seen firsthand the effects of that terrible disease...I've had people tell me there's no way I could be an alcoholic because...let's see...I'm a woman, I'm too young, they LIKE ME TOO MUCH, etc. I've had people tell me depression is not real and I just need to smile more, when I've had my head in the oven already, figuratively. People who don't understand that at times, pills have been the only thing keeping me alive. That not everyone can pull themselves out of a real live disease, just because YOU don't think it's real.

When confronted with these people I've learned to walk away. It's no fun arguing with someone, NO I REALLY AM SICK! Why spend so much energy beating a brick wall? Its a great way to start feeling shitty about yourself if you engage these people.

Just hope that their loved ones don't become afflicted with any of the aforementioned "imaginary conditions..."

What a dumb bitch. I had girl try to argue that ADD was totally made up, and that anyone who had it was just brainwashed. She would not let me get a word in edgewise about how adderall helped me so much, she just told me I was ignorant.

The problem with ADD is that doctors are too quick to diagnose someone with having it, so naturally people are going to be skeptical. For every 10 kids in elementary school that get doped up on Ritalin, only one actually needs it. The other 9 are just...you know, active. Like kids should be.

I saw a lot of this when I worked for a public health unit. The disorder actually DOES exist and still suffering from it in adulthood is a sure sign that you've got the real thing as opposed to just a short attention span. Anyone who would argue that a person in their twenties still taking meds doesn't actually need them is an idiot. When you're an adult, you can tell whether you need your friggin' medication or not, so obviously, yeah you've actually got ADD.

I've had people argue with me about my ADHD, and there really is no use even trying to convince them that it isn't something totally made up. I know damn well that I'm an annoying pain in the ass when I don't take my meds, and the people in my life let me know it too. I was at work last weekend and my Adderall wore off before I was done with my shift. I happened to be sitting with a doctor, and he actually asked if I had ever taken stuff for ADHD, because I was *really* high strung. If somebody doesn't want to believe that certain disorders exist, there isn't much you can do.

Some of the people that argue about the ADHD are also the people that told me schizophrenia isn't real either. I just have an 'extra creative mind'. Yeah....on occasion I just want to let them live with me for 2 weeks. I'll take my meds for the first week, and I won't take 'em for the second. I'm pretty damn sure that would change their mind.

I think we, our generation, is at the forefront of acknowledging that your mind can't always be controlled with sheer will. I think the single biggest diffence between us (the generations) is that we won't keep a stiff upper lip while we suffer and make our mates, kids, co-workers suffer. We want to be happy more than we want to keep up the false ideas about what the mind can and can't do.

I'm one of those people who believe it exists, and prolly suffer from it, but have seen far too many people who were simply overactive kids being drugged because the system said they had ADD and that was it.
My best friends oldest boy was given all sorts of shit for ADD, he didnt suffer from shit but a bad attitude, and his mom just went along with the doctor because she was brainwashed by her family to do what doctors tell her.
Long and short of it, the drugs fucked the kid up bad and at 15 yrs old he ran away from home and no one can find him anymore. He faded into the streets, addicted to all sorts of meds and now he is just a fucking statistic.

My sister took her kid to the psychiatrist, not a doctor who can perform tests, a shrink, and yes they have their point and purpose, they don't diagnose disease that is measured from your brainwaves. I do'nt know how anyone else was diagnosed, but I had everything from a grid on my back for allergies, blood tests, hearing tests, vision tests, sleep tests, stress tests, IQ tests, AND psychological tests done to RULE OUT EVERYTHING ELSE that could be wrong.

From what I've seen recently, they just go to a shrink and get pills. And the kid was like 4 at the time, so my sister was the only one talking to the psych. So um, why did the psych give her the meds? Cuz my sister is lazy and she doesn't want to deal with her kid. Children behave the way they live. I have two, and when I'm calm and happy, they are, when I'm stressed and angry, they are too. Go figure

This one kid who's around 12 told me he had ADD and so he can't learn. I told him that no, he was just stupid and lazy for believing it and using it for an excuse to be an asshole (which he is). Sure enough, his mom agreed, and so does the rest of our neighbours who want them kicked out.

There will always be vehement disbelievers. For example, we were discussing eating disorders in psych nursing. The Nigerian men in the class promptly stated that it did not exist. Luckily, most of them flunked out. I'm glad that people like them will never become nurses, as they cannot accept the fact that they are in a new country with new customs and they cannot just shoot off their mouths, especially to women.

HAHAHA Mast! SHUTUP!!! Actually I do that to customers! Once this guy was like getting all pissed off at me cuz each time a girl or guy walked past I had to keep looking over at them and had no clue what he was saying. I didn't take any meds that day. And so finally he says, well yells "HEY!!! So you want to talk to me or are you just looking for someone better? What's your problem?!?!"

I said, "You won't get a dance from me so I'm bored with you, but I was just trying to be nice and sit quiet while you ramled on". Then I left.
The worst thing, it was true. Then I ran to the back and took my meds. An hour later, all good! I could somewhat pay attention to boring retards.

Hat, yea, I'm glad morons can't get through life being totally stupid, at some point, they do have to learn something.

If that's what the meds allow...I just wouldn't take them.
