Default how to say no to a dancer.

We have a dancer at our club that plays mainly "Gangsta Rap," and I have noticed a large portion of customers complaining about it. My dilemma is that I don't know how to tell her that I don't want to play this type of music too much without offending her and, ultimately, not getting tipped out. Any suggestions?

Find alternatives for her -- some hip hop that isn't as hard, maybe, but that still has the kind of beat she likes, and then say, "Hey, I found these songs and I think they'd be great for you, so just trust me on this next set and let me play them." Find some middle ground -- like, one set a night or one song a set she can play what she likes, but if it's running off customers she should be smart enough to change it up for the sake of making money. If she is making money, well, the crowd doesn't mind that much.

Blame it on management. Any time I had a dancer who played horrible music, I refused to play it and blamed either the manager or owner...hey man my hands are tied, so and so said no more gangsta rap, I'm sorry but that's the rule now. Make sure you let the manager or owner knwo you are settin them up first tho or it backfires on ya.

Blade is of course correct. If a large portion of your customers are complaining, you have a problem. Problems can eat into profit. Even the dumbest manager knows this much.

I've been through this, it can be rough. You have to learn to say no, to write off the fucking 10-15$ she is probably tipping you anyway. For all I know it's more, but the basic principle still applies--if a dancer is causing you a lot of stress, it's cramping your style. If it's cramping your style, your show is going to suffer. You're going to make less money.

    So fuck the tip...

It'll pay off in the long run to just say fuck it, and be through with the shit. You will immediately feel at peace, and much more in control of the situation. Then the ball is in your court, and if she wants to hear music that might piss off customers, she will have to pay you for it.

hmmm to me it depends on the club your at and what a majority of the girls listen to if this "gangsta rap" is a rare set on your rock/techno line up then. then i would use the "blade" technique ive done it before. but then again i play what ever the girls want to hear and i mean WWwwwwwhhhhhhhaaaatttt evver and i work at a rap and RnB club. But i mean how long can a set be 2 to 3 songs depending on how many girls u got it could be another hour or more before she goes up again. And if the customer cant sit through 2 rap songs and they get mad and leave then they shouldnt be in there in the first place. Strip Clubs are about variety so some girls do rock some do techno, house some like the 80's, Rap, R&B and some like that weird ass shit you never heard of before. your there to play music so untill the management or owners tell you otherwise (cuz thats there job) i say play what ever she likes or feels comfortable dancing to and get that money.

Then again thats jus my 2 Cents and im one of the most under paid dj's at my club

I was gonna say the same thing Blade says. Or talk to the manager first and let them know the situation, and see what they suggest.

my club is saying no to rap right now because it's starting to attract a non spending crowd.

blame it on management. i agree with this completely.

Whoa, she's tipping you 5$? There's your problem right there, lol...

No offense, I've been there myself a few times, trust me. But no one is worth the least amount of stress for 5$. You'll feel so much better when you look at it that way next time you go in.

Also, don't be afraid to have it out with them if they are way out of line--same as they would do to the numerous assholes among the fucking DJs, haha! It's good to clear the air, sometimes. I have wound up being as close to some of the dancers I have fought like hell with, as I have with women that never caused any problems.

The more management has your back, the easier all this gets, that has to be said.

Good luck, and keep us posted.

I feel that it would be best to tell her that gangster rap is not the best types of music to dance to because it is not as sexy as other music, then name a few songs that are good to dance to. Also try mentioning to her even tho she likes the music, it would be a good idea for her objective to dance to what sells to customers. And there is nothing wrong with her liking this music, but as a DJ you want her to do well and make customers happy

well, if she makes good money off the sort of customers that like that music, she's probably found a pretty good niche, and i can understand her wanting you to play it for her.

if she'd make as much or more with something else, she can just deal.

or if she is a shitty tipper she can just deal.

Yeah the dj is there to make money, but for him to remain employed, the clubs gotta be making money, the club will be there providing employment for years, that dancer might not even be there tomorrow, play a MIX of what the customers want and what the girls want, shitty tippers ALWAYS get the clubs favorite format.
