Default Do I need a psychologist?

Good hell, I cannot make decisions to save my life. I am running from one job prospect to another and can't decide what to do anymore. I like stripping. I don't like some of the things that come along with it, like managers who try to molest their dancers or here, anyway, they try to make you devout your soul to it by working 6 nights a week. I just can't find a plan and stick to it. I keep having interviews and people willing to offer me work as a stripper, but then I doubt whether I should do it or not. Probably the biggest reason why I second guess myself is because most of the people in my life don't approve of it as a career choice. I just need some good perspective and can't decide what to do professionally to save my life. Pretty soon I'm going to be going into debt if I don't make some decisions. But that's the problem, I can't stick with them for the life of me. Have any of you gone through this and what's worked for you?

Still there with my life.... maybe a life coach? Ive thought about this because people from outside see things we dont see. But I dont think its really something a psycologist will help. Just someones imput can help put things into perspective. Of course youd want someone open minded to understand struggles with dancing/not dancing rather than saying DONT DANCE because thats BAD.

Hmmm....didn't even think about a life coach. I'm wondering though if my going back and forth on things and not being able to make up my mind might indicate I have some kind of chemical imbalance. I don't like taking prescription drugs, but I also don't like feeling like I have ADD and can't focus on anything.

yep, we're in the same boat. The thing is though that I keep putting myself through major stress as I go back and forth trying to make decisions. Maybe it's an indicator of lack of confidence in myself. However, I do have a sibling who is the same way and he was diagnosed with depression and is on medication. I just don't want to turn to medication because of the side effects...sigh....

Psychologists aren't only there for people who have disorders/ chemical imbalances. Perfectly healthy people sometimes need a psychologist to talk to. I'd say go and maybe just talking to someone and having them help you sort things out will make you feel better. Most of the time I think things are mind over matter.

I went through the same problems before and before you go onto meds, figure yourself out first. There are a lot of issues that come up being a dancer, like what others think when you aren't at the club (judgement), you get judged constantly at work, the work environment isn't professional, girls are brutal...It is an emotional roller coaster.
Take a deep breath in and clear your head. Turn off the lights and just forget everything and all worries. See what comes to your mind. You might realize that the club you are working at isn't right. Just like all "corporate employees" the work environment might not jive with you. Many people leave jobs to find something else - it is okay.
Dig deeper and love yourself and what you decide to do. Take a hold of it and tell yourself no matter what goes on, life is experiences, nothing more. It is okay to try new things. Feel good that you are taking life and learning from it so that oneday, the right thing will click.
As for judgement of people when you are outside the club - this is up to you while doing soul searching. If the life you decide to live involves others and their insights, then possibly dancing isn't for you. If you feel that this is who I am - love me or not, then keep on dancing and enjoy and embrace the stripper within.
The crossroads of life can lead to turmoil. But life for you right now is just saying step back and analyze - there is a light after all - it is within you.

At least you have something to compare to. My brother is practically perfect. I was always the bad one and he was the good one... not as much now but it really helped form the depression and lack of self esteem I have today. I am diagnosed Manic Dep but I am not on meds because I hate them. I choose to figure stuff out on my own and even tho I make the wrong decisions I will eventually learn from them. Ive taught myself to slow down. Its the lack of patience for me. I want this, no I want that without taking the time to plan it and see if I really do want it. Manic Manic Manic... Im way more manic than depressed. Does that make ANY sense? I just woke up...

A psychologist seems a little extreme for your needs. I think you could benefit from just seeing a counselor or therapist who can help you talk through your issues and assist you in figuring out what your values are what what you really want to do.

Just a note. Psycologists cannot write prescriptions. They do not have a doctorate. Psyciatrists can write prescriptions.

Well, it sounds like you have some issues in your life that you're not happy with, and working with a therapist might be a good choice.

Typical therapy involves examining childhood history. It's my personal opinion that this is valuable only up to a point. It's good to identify a family dynamic or recognize traumatic events, but a lot of therapists just bog you down in that shit and don't give you practical suggestions for moving forward.

That's why I encourage people to look into Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. It's a short, focused form of therapy designed to change patterns of negative thoughts through a logical, question-and-answer approach.

You can read more about it here:

Psychologists do have doctorates, but not medical degrees. They are 'doctors' like professors are doctors. It's like that movie Mumford..."Oh, so you're not a REAL doctor"

"That's right, I'm the fake kind"

Youre right. Just like lawyers have doctorates.... I get all that professional stuff mixed up. Just minus the 'no doctorate part' and remember 'cant write prescriptions' part. Thanks for the clarification - I hate having incorrect info up....
