O.K. do any of you remember the good old days when you had to hunt the alt.binaries..... files for groups?

Does anyone still use them? If so, are there any free usenet servers you are using?

...yes, i remember them and i use them every now and them. There are still plenty of groups but spam has slowed down quality post count. FTP sites and forums like this one also have reduced the need for groups. The upside is once a binary is posted it usually stays there a few weeks until it drops off. Nope, i dont know of any quality binary free ones.

Been using usenet ever since I was a wee thing and I haven't slowed down.

I have an Easynews account and I highly recommend them. If you want binaries, it's worth paying for as most ISP servers are not very good.

LOL at ftps. This is the 2000s mang. It's all about torrents now for everything if it's not on your newsserver.

I've been on Usenet since '99. I get my stuff through Flash News Groups. Just about everything under the sun passes by my newsreader every day.

Yea - I use supernews as my provider and gravity as my reader. The best when u want the latest celeb sex video.

BUT the RIAA is gonna try and go after the USENET like they went after Napster and other P2P services. not sure how that will work but it could mean the end of the Usenet !!!

Well, Usenet did survive and thrive before people used it to share copyright files. Why would it be the end of usenet? It didn't cause an end to the Web just because companies went after file sharing software and sites that hosted copyright files.

I used to read alt.sex.stories.moderated. And there were a few variations of that newsgroup. I love me some dirty filth!

Because how will they control copyright material flowing thru the usenet. Not like its one company like YouTube that can enforce its users and its content. Major ISP just censor the usenet. ANd companies like Supernews, will have to do the same. IE turn off alt.binaries and the warez groups. But that's no guarantee that copyrighted material wont flow thru. Im not saying the WEB will end, but more companies may turn off the usenet protocol entirely rather than face lawsuits.

And the big usenet providers will go away ... I mean it will prolly happen on its own just by attrition - newbies have no idea about usenet...

I don't know about Usenet going away since I've seen so much copyrighted material pass through in the past 8 years. Posting methods and styles have changed, but the flow of materials has not.

Valid points, and may well play out as you suggest. Personally I don't read much of usenet anymore, but I do use an NNTP client to read various newsgroups from companies that have news setup. The rest of usenet I rarely bother with anymore unless I find something indirectly via Google's groups.

I agree about the attrition point. Interest groups without web front ends are likely to become increasingly rare too, and you can host discussion forums on the web (HTTP protocol). Usenet is still more bandwidth efficient, but with broadband access it matters less.

The reason I asked was because you could access them via AOL when it was a membership. Now that it is free, it appears to have disappeared!
I was curious if it was still around with the ease of creating websites / blogs / forums.
    Thanks for the info.

Doesn't Outlook Express have a newsgroup reader? All of that bitorrent stuff is confusing. It take a lot of work searching through the shit.

OE's newsreading for binaries is shit. Same with thunderbird. They are made for text posts. Proto-forum style.

Newsbin is my recommended binary client of choice.

In terms of finding stuff, torrents are much easier to find than stuff on usenet unless you have an account with a dedicated news service with global searching, etc.

Newsgroups are still valuable for both text and binaries. It is going strong, but almost all the porn groups are innundated with spam and pseudo-pedophilia from Russia. AOL dropped newsgroups before it went 'free.' Their interface wasn't much good anyway. RoadRunner went to a hosted news-server system instead of relying on their own completely inadequate system.

I have lots of suggestions if anyone needs them.
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

Check out asstr.org. Archive of files from the different alt.sex groups with a handy search interface.

I used to try to read alt.sex.stories etc, but a lot of them are about f/sucking underaged people or about incest or both. Kind of turned me off. The binaries are more fun anyway.

People like Agent ($) or Free Agent, esp. for the binaries groups. But I like Xnews with its myriad of customization features. Many mail and news readers are ok for text groups. I also use QuickPAR for file repair and RARzilla for de-archiving. All those are free appls. essentially.
I have never gotten a virus or trojan horse or worm from the newsgroups, but I've gotten several of those from sketchy web sites.
It's been a long time since I've uploaded a binary to any newsgroup, but there is a FAQ that covers those areas.
    Questions...?

So nice to see some people still know what newsgroups are! In my opinion, its still the safest, quickest, easiest way to get most everything. But I'm used to that glazed over "huh" expression when people ask me where to get whatever.. I always say "Newsgroups, that's pretty much all I ever use.. you know, Usenet?".. "Is that a webpage?"... echhh

I used Agent for years.. but I've found GrabIt to be the best in my opinion.. couple that prog with paying a couple bucks a month for shemes.com's usenet search service (integrated into Grabit).. and you never have to actually step foot in an individual newsgroup. I always hated sitting there pulling new headers and then sifting through the garbage. So much easier just typing "Tupac" into a search field.

I've used Easynet, which has been really good but not altogether ultra-fast, plus they have a web-based interface, which can be useful. But now since RR's news server has gotten much better (though nowhere as good as Easynet's) because..., well..., because I'm cheap and what I have is good enough for what I do.

I'lll check our Grabit soon. I never liked Agent, seemed to lack some features I need (forgot which). But I'm happy with Xnews.

Back in the Arpanet days I was all about Usenet, Gopher, Archie and Veronica. A.S.S-C was an old haunt. Trading info, intel and barbs with "The Pope", "Bob -insert something here - Smyth", and "Mr Pitiful". Now days I pop up in the alt.sports Jets forum from time to time. I still use Forte's Agent. I suppose I should modernize.

It's torrents [uTorrent] to get files.
    Fiat justitia, pereat mundus.

BTW, while we are on the subject, is it needed to point out the obvious: That it is just possible that if you are willing to judge the worth of someone simply by what you read on a website about them it might say a whole hell of a lot more about you than it says about the person you are judging?
