When I first started, I had really sore knees for a couple of months, but nothing that hindered my day to day activities. You should see a doctor.

my knees were so so sore for maybe a week when I was new, but 3 weeks seems extreme. definitely get some medical help.

When I started dancing, I had pain exactly like what you describe. Sitting, standing, walking, I couldn't do shit. It turned out to be tendinitis from repetitive motion. Since my leg muscles weren't developed enough to handle it, the strain instead concentrated in my tendons, inflaming them. I had to take 6 weeks off of dancing to let it heal.

If that is your problem, you really should see a doctor and take time to rest completely. My knees hurt for 5 weeks after I stopped dancing, but if I hadn't taken that break I probably would have permanently fucked them up.

Ice for the first 3 days I took off, ibuprofen, and just resting helped me a lot.

I had the same problem. It was caused by using poor form when bending over, squatting, etc. Back then we didn't really grind, so I couldn't just sit in the guy's lap. Try to practice proper form, there are some sites out on the web that might be able to explain it better than me.

Also, in the meantime, when you get home, elevate and ice down your knees. I also used icey hot on them during the day, temporarily relieved the pain.

For the first YEAR that I danced, I wore kneepads. They are ACE Bandage kinds, the kind you can get at Rite Aid/Walgreens etc. I started off in a very stagework/floorwork heavy club and all of the girls wore them, so I didn't think that they looked odd. Especially if you combine them with knee high socks/boots/fishnets then they don't look out of place and you also protect your knees. It also makes it a lot easier to slide around onstage. Hope your knees get better!

    And also, arnica. Arnica arnica!

(here is a photo of me wearing the pads.)
