    Default Backpacking.

I'm going backpacking for the first time ever- carrying all my belongings and necessities on my back. I'm traveling with my boyfriend- we're first going to Los Angeles to hang out at the beach, possibly get some jobs doing extras work, maybe work a little as well. Next, we're going to a rainbow gathering in Mexico- my first REAL one ever (, and then after that, flying to the east coast and then on to europe to go to paris, amsterdam, london etc and stay in hostels and at friend's houses.

I have a good sized backpack, a really nice tent (we're going to choose camping over hostels/hotels wherever possible) and camping stuff.. but I am so overwhelmed about what clothes to bring!! It will probably be cold in europe (we'll be there either end of january/beginning of february) but I can't carry much- and since mexico and so. cali are HOT, I've got to bring clothes for both seasons.

So could someone whos been backpacking on long trips (anyone??) help me out with a packing list? Things that are useful that I won't think of? things I might forget?? etc etc.

    thanks!

go to the forums, you have loads of search options there, and sooo many people with the experiance to help you. post up your itinary and ask for suggestions, youl get some great off the beaten track responses i imagine

btw, alot of europe wont have much in the way of camping facilities, and like many woud be tenters, the tent wont get used.just a thought.

you can also search and book hotesls there, and they are cheap as chips anyways. you can find dorm beds for about USD$12 each a night

I grew up camping. It was such a blast. Magic words when packing for a trip like that though is: convertible and reversible.
And if possible, tan earthy colors are your friend, because what happens if you spill coffee on your white dress. It's not like you have a washing machine at your disposal. So you either have to rock it or carry it around in your pack.

So stuff like dark khaki cargo pants would be awesome. Even more awesome if you can find the ones that you can fold and tie up to make capri pants. Or if they have a zipper where you can zip off the legs to make shorts. So it's like 2 clothes in 1. Even better if you can find a pair that has both features.

Also, I'm not really sure if you plan on being more rugged or if you want at least 1 dress for any outings. But a really awesome option would be something like this
convertible sarong dress/skirt/shirt. (doesn't have to be silk though, this was just one I pulled up). You can wear it a million different ways, it's lightweight and also if the stain issue presents itself, excuse yourself and rewrap it. The sarong can also double as something to sit on, or something to provide shade.

Here's a more complete list of essentials and tools.

One of the things she mentions are Aquatabs for treating water.

And look into a Sterno kit. They're little cans around the size of a tuna can that you fire up and can put under a mini folding grill. You can boil water, cook Oodles of Noodles, etc...

Med kit - check her list, but also I think an antihistamine/allergy medicine is a good thing to have too.

The tent is primarily for camping in cali and all the way down the west coast at various campsites... and definitely for the gathering in mexico (although we may build a treehouse)

If you're going to a rainbow gathering, please make sure to bring santiary supplies. Rainbow gatherings have a ridiculous lack of infastructure for such things!

Am I the only one who read this the OTHER way at first? StripperWeb context and all. Tee hee.

But really, have a great time! I loved backpacking in Europe. I wonder what youth hostels are like these days?
