    Books for Teenage Boys

I just finished reading Nick Hornby's , and I started thinking about Xmas presents for my brothers. I'd like to get them books and encourage them to read more. My two older brothers are the same age as the male protagonist in Slam so I thought they'd be able to relate well, but I don't know if it's appropriate to give my teenage brothers a book about high school sex and teen pregnancy.

I'm also having a hard time thinking of other books to give...

Brother #1 is 16, into carpentry, a little socially awkward, loves his family and his dog and is kind of a suburban redneck. Likes yard work and gardening.

Brother #2 is 15, socially popular, is into designer clothes and pop movies, has a slight teenage superiority complex he's finally (thankfully) starting to grow out of. I was thinking of getting Slam for him.

Brother #3 is 12, I don't know him that well, very good at art and not much else, only reads because Mom makes him, would rather watch Spongebob Squarepants all afternoon, and I guess you'd say he has ADD. I don't want to give him a children's book and insult him, but I don't want to give him something that would bore him either.

Suggestions? I can't think of any books they might be interested in, except maybe Into the Wild for the oldest one... I guess I don't have to get the youngest a book, but if there's a book out there that would get him to read more, I'd love to know about it!

Oh, and BTW, Slam is fucking brilliant. Read it.

maybe get the ooldest both the ook and movie fight club. teens who don't like to read often really like movie books.

if he likes the book, you can get him more books by chuck palhinuik.

oh, and harry potter for the 12 yr. old. book +movie make it a lot more likely that he'll finish it.

Mom tried getting him to read Harry Potter. He likes the movies but couldn't finish the books, he just got bored with them. I don't understand it but it's the way he is... maybe I should just get him art supplies or something.

I haven't read Fight Club but I love Chuck Palahniuk... but is that age-appropriate? I'm so clueless here, I never know what's going to piss my mom off! (She's a devout Catholic and very anti-sex.) Maybe I should read Fight Club first myself and see.

I think its totally appropriate to give a teenager a book about sex and pregnancy. Im sure it wont shock them!
I might try my son with that Nick Hornby book, thanks for the idea. He is almost 16 and Ive been trying to think of books for him too. He mostly seems to read books about music, art or sport but lately hes shown an interest in some of my books about paranormal activity - especially peoples accounts of ghosts.
Im thinking of getting him some books written by or about some of the bands he likes.

ummm. all of his books are pretty..... r rated. but if he's seen the movie, he'll be fine w/ the book. I think it's fine for an 16 yr old, anyways. I'm sure he's read/watched way worse things!.... but if you gift it to him on the sly, and tell him "don't show mom, she won't think you're old enought to read it", he's sure to finish the whole thing in record time, just to see what's so bad about it!

lullaby is a chuck book that's more tame but still very good. my fav. of his, actually. it has a tiny bit of sex but nothing of a porn caliber.

since the 12 yr old is very into art why not get him a graphic novel or a book with a lot of pictures. sticking with the theme, both of these are also movies. v is a graphic novel, more comic then txt, but still a book. stardust is mostly txt but the artwork is beautiful. more famtasy looking then comic book. make sure it's this version of stardust, most are only txt.

    From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up–The date is November 5th, 1997. War has ravaged England, entire races have been eradicated, the entire British populace is under constant surveillance, and the absolute power is absolutely corrupt. On this historic day, a man with a strong resemblance to Guy Fawkes (in action and dress) blows up Parliament. The bomber, a masked character named V, saves a girl named Eve from a violent crime and takes her under his wing. Moore's dystopian, fascist version of England, ruled by one central leader and his sects (named after parts of the body, such as Finger, Nose, and Voice), is systematically dismantled by the enigmatic V. Readers must ultimately decide if V is a mad anarchist/terrorist or a freedom-fighting avenger for good. Originally published in 1989, V has been reissued as a hardcover book with never-seen-before sketches and two new vignettes. This story is slated to be released as a major motion picture in 2006, and demand should intensify as the movie trailers come out. Combining alternate history with moral questions about freedom and identity, this book would work well in a school setting; and while there is some slight nudity and violence, they fit well within the framework of the story.–Jennifer Feigelman, Plattekill Public Library, Modena, NY

I'd heard of The Dangerous Book for Boys but I didn't know much about it. I just had a look, and I think my stepfather would actually really like it! I think I'll get that for him!

I'd never heard of Rule of the Bone but it sounds terrific. I'll pick it up, thank you!

^^^ Yeah, my mom would LOVE that.

Otherwise good suggestions, guys. Thank you! I hadn't even thought about graphic novels for the youngest but that's a great idea. I really appreciate the help!

    That is a good one.

Less edgy than any of the suggestions thus far would be the Power of One by Bryce Courtenay..I recommend it to people all the time, and thnk it's esp. appropriae for a teenage boy. It's not genius, but it's uplifting without beig sappy, and just generally engaging and empowering. Encourages individuality, which is always good for the teen folk.

or if the 12 year old is into adventure, maybe an arthur ransom book (sort of a maritime version of famous five)

ohh and 'the cay' is a good one, about a kid and a dude stuck on a raft in the carribean!

Great suggestions! "Hatchet" has a companion movie, "A Cry In The Wild"

I also suggest "The Way Of The Peaceful Warrior" by Dan Millman. The writing style is not my favorite, but it can be an insightful read for a young man. It's also written in a style that will not alarm prudish mothers

Try Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, or the Halo books (they're the storyline that go along with the video game).

There is a Barnes and Noble in Medford on Biddle road, or you can try Blue Dragon books the used book store on Main in Ashland.

Did you see "Play it again games" in Ashland? They renovate and resell all sorts of games.

I think Palahniuk might be a bit much, especially something like Choke. Fight Club may work for the older boys, but your mom would flip if she knew what was written on those pages! Have you seen the movie? A LOT of it was taken directly off the page, like Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
