Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Choke is one of my favorite books but I dunno that I want to give it to an underage Catholic boy. I've read Lullaby and a few of his other books too and I just wouldn't feel comfortable going there. TONS of other terrific suggestions in this thread though! I love this forum, it's such a wealth of information!

    Fuck, I love this town.

Same shopping center (like Ashland has one than one, ha!) as Wendy's, Senior Sams, and the Cinema. If you go into DJ's video there they have a good selection of foreign films, anime, and video games, plus film memorabilia.

Play it again games has all sorts of games. They repackage them and replace pieces that are lost. Probably will find games you haven't seen in years too. Challenge the boys with their own GO board and personal pieces.

There was another used book store across the street from the Southern Oregon University Campus, a few doors down from the 7/11. May still be there.

Should be lots of College course books you would like too.

    *Bump*

I thought I'd tack this on- Dan Millman's book was made into a movie in 2006 called "Peaceful Warrior"..In case any of you would like to inject guidance into a reading-averse teen male's life.

Nick Nolte, Scott Mechlowitz, and Amy Smart are in the film.

If you are looking for a good set of series of books you might look into either The Wheel of Time series or The Sword of truth series. Both are fantasy dont know if they would like that but they are very very good series and will keep them entertained for a while. Wheel of time is like 13 books long and Sword of truth just published its last book at 9

Oh yeah! I did get them books and they went over well. The 12-year-old artist who hates to read got a copy of , the 15-year-old hipster/jock got Nick Hornby's , and the 16-year-old carpenter got . All went over well, but the woodworking book in particular made my oldest brother so happy he started stuttering. Apparently he's searched all over for a book of simple projects and couldn't find one he could afford.

It was a good year for gift-giving, actually. I love giving gifts and seeing the recipient's eyes light up.

Good thing I checked, but I just dug this thread up to recommend this book. A friend mailed it to me and said it was her favorite science fiction book. It's pretty good and has helped me kill off some recent travel time. It struck me that it would be a really good book for younger teenagers, probably a little more for boys. It would be good for those that are feeling isolated and alone, which most adolescents do, but especially good for those who are isolated and alone because of being the smart kid, the nerd, or who have talents that set them apart from other kids.

"He will come in one of the pre-chosen forms. During the rectification of the Vuldrini, the traveler came as a large and moving Torg! Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor! Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!"

What about the Artemis Fowl books by Eoin Colfer for the youngest one? They have a sarcastic boy hero who regularly out-thinks adults, which I would imagine would make your average adolescent happy.
Dear Lord, save us from those thy children who speak without thought, and protect them also from the rotten tomatoes they shall thereafter receive in the kisser.

Douglas Coupland for the older guys. Hey Nostradamus! and Microserfs for example. Particularly for #2.

Fantasy is a pretty easy bet with teens. Guy Gavriel Kay, George R.R. Martin, Steven Erickson are a few of the better authors but maybe not to those who are into working with their hands or may have ADD. Horror like Stephen King, Dean Koontz and Richard Layman is also a pretty safe bet to interest teen boys. All three contain sex and substantial gore/violence. Another nod to the Ender books by Card here too I guess.

Does it have to be fiction? For #1 maybe books about how the world works (physically) may be a good option? Popscience books on Physics and the natural sciences? Bill Bryson's *A Short History of Nearly Everything is a neat book.

You can try and take a Literary approach. See if any of the three relate to Holden Caulfield from The Catcher in the Rye. Or if they like the parable of Animal Farm, the SciFiness of Nineteen Eighty-Four, We by Eugene Zamiatin, Brave New World or Slaughter-House Five (actually any Vonnegut is a good idea, especially if an introduction to Palahniuk is in the future. Then there's John Wyndham's books...and so on. I'm of the belief that there's a book out there that will make everyone love reading but finding it before they get turned off reading is challenging.
