    Default WHOA...scared :(

I just took my dog out to potty this morning, and I hear someone coming around the corner. Naturally, this sort of freaked me out because, well, normal people are asleep at 4 am. This guy who lives below me on the first floor comes rolling up to me in his wheel chair. He looks at me with this weird look, says "how's it going?" and rolls past, into the building, towards his door. But here's the creepy part:

He had a butcher knife in his lap.

Why the hell would anyone roll around inside of a gated apt. complex at four in the morning with a butcher knife on their lap?

So I instantly got that bad feeling and kept walking fast down the sidewalk with my dog. I turned around, and he had come back out to the sidewalk and was sitting there watching me.

I then walked..er, ran, around the building and came back to my building, to go up the stairs on the opposite side of where he was. When he saw me, he started rolling towards me as fast as he could. I ran up the stairs, went inside, and locked the door. I heard him open his door downstairs and go inside.

What the hell?? I'm kind of scared. I usually run in the mornings, and now I'm totally freaked.

    WTF.

Don't go running. Lock yourself up like fort knox and I don't think it would be too out of line to call your local non emergency police station and let them know of the suspicious behavior.

wow. That would freak me out as well. Creepy.

I'd call the apartment management and tell them. or something.
And uhh...take a butcher knife with me when I walk the dog again.

It's times like these I wish I had a gun.

Or a big, vicious german shepherd. (my dog is a 20# cocker spaniel).

^^^ Shes gonna go outside with a butcher knife and someone is going to see her walking with one and get freaked out so they are going to walk their dog with one and someone is going to see them and walk out with one and internet forums all over the complex will fill with posts about it and people saying "get your butcher knife out so she wont get you!" and then in a day or two everyone is going to be walking around her complex with a butcher knife. Yikes!

Oh god. That is so bad!!! If I had a weapon on me, when he came rolling towards me I would have (I hope) went right up to him and demanded to know what the fuck was his problem, or just....what was up. It's bad that he saw you scared like that. I hope he is "just" mentally ill. Maybe you wanna call up a mental-health-social-work-department on him and say that he is a threat to himself and others and doesn't seem stable and you're worried, maybe someone will come out and visit.

I bet he was initally scared of something too... as opposed to like, rolling around at 4AM looking for someone to stab. Maybe he was even freaked out that he heard someone else up at that hour. I'd be really disturbed by the whole thing too, though, and probably would skip the run at least for awhile.

4AM is a really creepy hour. I have a neighbor who must be either a daysleeper or an insomniac because he's always up and playing opera. It totally creeps me out even though obviously I'm up then too and not necessarily like "up to no good."

ya. remember he's extra vunerable being in a weelchair. he was freaked out, wanted to see what that noise was, and also wanted to protect himself.

I tend to agree with Lola on this. On the other hand, why was he wheeling around outside at 4 am? You had a reason: Dog-walking. What was his?

If there's anything I've learned in the last week it's not to walk your dog when it is dark and you are alone. The dog doesn't need a walk at 4 a.m.

That was my thought. And many people just can't sleep so they get up and take a stroll. Being in a wheelchair has got to be a target for scum. Dog out at 4am? Nah make the animal wait....

Pain? Insomnia? Perhaps he sleeps all day....

People in a wheelchair don't get to do what we do. I believe he was afraid he may be a victim, and carries a weapon incase, and he just could not sleep. 4am is a great time to be out and soothing imo.

But dangerous. I doubt he did anything wrong. And he had a chance right then and did nothing.

I wouldn't be paranoid about it for the same reason as everyone else says...Maybe he was kinda freaked out too. But better safe than sorry! Maybe he saw someone suspicious and feels like he has to carry a weapon. You never know. I would just carry some kind of protection on me if I was out by myself at that time.

Whenever a man greater than the age of 50 approaches you at high speeds, comment on gas prices. Not only will it stop them dead in their tracks, but it will completely divert their anger giving you enough time to make your escape.

I have a question, were you outside before you neighbor? If so, i wonder why he needs to go out at 4am in the morning anyway. If he wasnt doing anything he doesnt need to check outside anyway. I understand if its for his protection, but if he doesn't feel safe inside that area, then he doesn't need to be out at that time. Taking an animal to on a potty break is understandable.

I would buy into the "he was scared and needed protection too" theory but there are 3 things about it that don't jive right with me.

1). He's got a butcher knife. If you're looking for protection, why not something more street savvy like a switchblade, taser, or something less ominous and Friday the 13th? Why not just cart around a chainsaw too?
2). He's "people watching" at 4 a.m. Something just strikes me funny about that, but who knows, I'd give him the benefit of the doubt on that one.
3). He came back and was actively pursuing Tampa. That part rubs me wrong. I'd be very weirded out and worried if someone had a butcher knife in their possession and were trying that hard to greet me at 4 a.m.

I'd give the police a call on the non-emergency line. Tell them what happened. At least they'll have it documented and will probably send a car or 2 to patrol the area at that time. They pay attention to that.

Everyone's so suspicious about 4am! People have their reasons, it ain't just us strippers. Doesn't even mean he's regularly up at 4am, maybe he heard a noise? Yea the part about him rolling aggressively in your direction is bad. I just would feel so unsettled that I hadn't gone up to my neighbor and demanded to know what was up and that he saw you scared. Fuck him. Let him throw a knife at me! I'd duck and have a reason to end the prob immediately.

I had a weird guy in a wheelchair looking at me like that too lately--no knife that I could see tho. I rolled up (in my car) to a gas station in Nevada that turned out to be closed, but I had to park and walk to the door a lil ways, middle of the nite, is rolling around on the street and headed towards me! Then he stops and just STARES. Weird!

i think we are all missing the true problem, why do we have to feel unsafe in our world?
ok lets look at this literally, a guy in a wheel chair with a butcher knife.
striking range about 4 feet high maximum, and a radius of 2 1/2 feet to the side holding the knife.
balance not so good, wheelchairs can be very tippy.
speed also not so good (he can use both hands to roll if the knife is in one) unless it was electric, then i would also assume that other physical mobility would be impaired.

the poor guy was probably bored couldnt sleep and had the knife to protect himself (not a good choice of weapon). he talked you and then realised he freaked you out. he then tried to catch up to you to explain he isnt a psycho killer, and by that time you had made it into your apt. and he figured he made an ass out of himself and returned to his.

then again he could of just finished eating some fresh liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti.

also, people project. it's very possible he was not "agressive" at all, and that the op was just frightened. in a scary situation, things that are normally well, normal, seem ultra freaky.

if you nitice, the op was afraid before she even saw the guy. And I'm sure he was as afraid of her as she was of him. He's immobile, at least partly, so she has a big advantage against him too....

he probably had a bad dream or heard noises outside. I know I've went outside in the middle of the night with a butcher knife and a baseball bat b/c i got spooked. weapons give you a false sense of security. the attacker(s) would likely overpower or shoot you before you could use it, and it's more likely to be used against you.

WOW that story creeped me out

He may have been harmless, who knows. But why the fuck would he be carrying a butcher knife??

I agree with Andygirl on this one....better safe than sorry. I read her post about her husband getting beat up for no reason. That was really scary and fucked up. People are psychotic sometimes

Dear lord, PLEASE tell your apartment manager about this. If she runs her building the way I run mine there's a whole investigation that needs to be done, not to mention the fact that there might already be a 'record' on this wheelchair guy. At the very least, if wheelchair dude is crazy and stabs another resident one day, it won't come as a huge surprise.

Ok, I guess I should have explained why I was out at four in the morning I don't dance anymore; I teach high school. I get up at four, plan my lesson, am at the gym by 4:45, back home in the shower at 5:45, and out the door to work by 6:15. That's why I was walking the dog at 4.

After I posted that message, I was leaving my apt to go to the gym, and one of my friends was coming down the stairs to walk his dog (he teaches at my school and gets up at crazy hours too). Anyhow, I went up to him to tell him the story about wheelchair man. As I'm in the middle of the story, all of the lights go out on the outside of the building. It was pitch dark.

    Fucking creepy.

So, I ran down the stairs to my car and drove around the complex, and the my building was the only one with lights out in the entire, huge complex.

So, I know that's probably purely coincidental, but it scared the hell out of me.

Sounds to me like you're trapped in the script of a pretty good horror film.
