    Default Hate the Dentist

Aaaaaaaaaaaargh, I had to get an old filling replaced today, and it SUCKED!

I havn't had to have any dental work done since I was pretty young fortunately. When I came to the US, my teeth were in really bad shape and were for a long time. I remember a lot of dental torture growing up.

At some point things became normal and the only thing I've had done in 20 years is my wisdom teeth. And they knocked me the fuck out for that one.

I went for my cleaning last week and apparently I have three silver fillings that should have been replaced 15-17 years ago. He changed out the top one today. It was all the way in the back of my mouth and that shit hurt!

Not so much the pain, but the young and smell of my tooth being drilled down. Ouch! They had to put child's spacers to keep my small mouth open. The jaw part hurt the most. Same with him feeling the needle shooting me up with Novocaine.

I freaked out so much that he gave me a script for one valium and I have to come back to take care of the other two.

    One valium only? Sucks.

So ladies, make sure that you have your ancient fillings replaced at some point, or they will create fissures in the surrounding tooth. He said I might need crowns when all is said and done. That really sucks and I hope he isn't saying that to make more money off of me.

This entire ordeal was really traumatizing.

    Hey Katrine-

I so feel you! I have to go to a new dentist and I am having a lot of pain on two sides of my uppers. Here in Santa Monica, dentists and dermatologists are always trying to upsell you on cosmetic procedures and playing on your insecurites.

I just don't know who to trust. My man has gone and told me that they will try to upsell.

Btw, I am armed w/ viccodin and valium, so I am just going to pump it up.

Hope you feel better and ask him for more valium;-)

*sigh* Been there. My dentist has probably named his yacht after me. Fucking teeth... I look forward to losing all of mine and getting a nice, trouble-free set of dentures.

Just spoke to my mom. She has three really poorly done crowns that are always giving her trouble. She also has good fillings that have been in her teeth upwards 20 years. She said I should seek a second opinion before I go back and have him drill me again.

The cost of the fillings is relatively small, probably $50/each. However, my colleauge told me that 2 crowns would cost me about $800, even with our dental plan.

Really, its not about the money though. That drilling sound and smell is so traumatizing, if I can avoid it and keep the ghetto silver fillings, that would be fine.

Anyone else have any experience with this? Would it be really sketchy to wait until something was wrong with the filling, if ever?

I'm sorry that sucks. I had some fillings a few months ago. Don't you hate it when they get the giant needle with pain killer and say "This won't hurt" then it really hurts when they inject it. I got clear fillings so I had to lay in the chair with a dental dam and my jaw wired open in a thing like a mouse trap for an hour.

Yup, he had to put 2 in my mouth. Medium sized children's spacers. My jaw and check are both still sore. Fortunately, he rubbed Benzocaine all over my mouth before he used the needle. I held my eyes shut, as I have been known to destroy the room when a needle came anywhere close to me. The shot didn't hurt per say, but I could feel the needle going into my gums. Gawd, that sucks!

I'm your Bizarro Twin, I have Vanilla Sex but LOVE the going to the dentist.

To answer your question, I have several fillings that are years overdue for a change-out, but until they give me trouble they're staying put. (No dental insurance.) About 4 weeks ago the endontist checked them and said the teeth were healthy (I had mysterious dental pain that turned out to be....a bad sinus infection.) So worry not.

However, 2 years ago I had the dentist crown a molar that had a huge filling in it..They might have hustled me (the other molar they said needed a crown is FINE), but I distinctly remember smelling decay when they drilled the tooth down, so it's good I got that one done.

Get 3-4 opinions before you decide to have more work done, to put your mind at ease.

I don't like it, but I'm better about it then I used to be. I actually will go by myself now.
The part i really hate is it's just like going to the mechanic. You don't know if they're telling you the truth AND they always seem to find something. Could be I'm getting old and falling apart. Damn.

    I feel your pain. Literally.

I've spent thousands at the dentist having work done over the last six months. I have really thin tooth enamel even though I'm good with brushing and flossing.

Luckily, my dentist is awesome and does good, thorough work quickly.

I got more than one Valium though...that helps too.

I don't know if this of any help but i had three old fillings taken out and crowned with porcelain. They felt very heavy for about a month. These are molars i had done...the pain never bothered me, my dentist swabs a cherry tasting goo on my gums first, that is numbing enough, lol.
After though i lost two of the crowns! It HURT bad, air got to my root or pulp i guess as he says and the nerves. Real pain in the ass. My dentist wont do Amalgam fillings though. That is what i had they say...

I go to a new dentist now, headphones, sunglasses they give you to wear because those damn lights kill the eyes, and the glasses are great...the feeling of that atmosphere really helps getting your teeth done imo. Also i tell them i am numb hurry back, very soon!!! They better, or i leave.

    Good luck.

Granted, I went to a teaching clinic, but I had:

    Two crowns replaced
    A labial frenectomy
    Gingival recontouring

And what kind of painkillers did I get?

    NONE!

I had a crown drilled out and fitted with no anaesthetic once. Bits of blood and pulp were splattered all over my glasses and I felt every nanosecond of that drill. I think I left permanent fingernail marks in the armrests of that chair.

I have a good friend who is a dentist. He specializes in people with problems, the kinds that your typical dentists won't handle. He told me one of the difficult things in his practice is that he spends several hours seeing someone and then coming up with a plan and pricing for the treatment. Then when he tells them how much it will cost they freak out. I would freak out too. He said its not uncommon for someone to need extensive work done and it could cost in the thousands and sometimes in the tens of thousands of dollars. We're not talking a crown or two. We're talking veneers, crowns, bridges for most of their teeth. He said some people wait so long to have their teeth taken care of they get so bad that you have no choice other than pulling all your teeth out. So take care of your teeth, see the dentist regularly, etc.

He said there was some decay under the filling he already swapped, but I didn't smell anything.

Fortunately, I am working with several dental offices in my business. One of them should be able to help me out.

Nothing at all? Not even a shot of novocaine? Wow, you are brave!

The old dentist had the sunglasses too! And they had an flatscreen so you could watch a movie while they worked. And they played lame, yet soothing Christian music.

This new guy...I asked if he had a stress ball or something he could squeeze. Nothing. Then I tried to hold the hygenist's hand, and she wouldn't let me. I'm sure she had her reasons but I remember they used to let me hold someone's hand when I had extensive work as a child.

I just went to my dentist after over a year. Simply for a cleaning (that I've been putting off). Last year, I had 6 (!) crowns done, to replace fillings. Still paying on it. I must say, he's the best dentist, ever, tho. He gave me many novicane shots, 2 valium, & even threw in the cab fare home (since I couldn't drive & had only a one way ride).
Although he said my teeth are in pretty decent shape, considering, I need the lower left fillings/crowns replaced. He said I should consider moving on it, b/c anytime I could bite down, mess up a tooth/teeth to the tune of requiring a root canal. I also try to wear ear plugs (helps somewhat) that noise drives me insane.

They gave me a shot but it wasn't enough, and it wore off before they started working. My body processes anaesthetics really quickly; they gave me the shot, wandered off to "let it kick in," and by the time they came back half an hour later it was gone. I protested but they didn't want to give me another shot and insisted I wouldn't be able to feel anything, I'd be fine. There wasn't really anything for me to do but dig my nails in and get through it. I wound up kind of meditating and taking my mind to a pretty forest on a mountaintop so I wouldn't have to think about it.

    Not fun.

Aww Kat, you tried to hold the hygenist's hand and she wouldn't let you? What the hec? If any human being reached out in fear to me, I'd feel like a total shitbag denying them a li' comfort.
Maybe I am overly emotional tonight but that made me feel sad! sheesh!

Also, definitely get a second opinion anytime intuition tell you that you may need one. I went to a dentist who told me I needed $3100. worth of fillings. This dentist took x-rays but told me that some of the cavities could only be seen "with the human eye." Intuition told me that it was time to get a 2nd opinion. Dentist #2 told me I only needed $1200. worth of fillings and pointed the cavities out to me on an x-ray. There were far fewer than Dentist #1 lead me to believe. Some will deifnitely say shit to make money off of you. I've never trusted dentists (or mechanics) and this was one instance where skepticism paid off, literally.
    Keep us updated.
