    Default Question for dog owners/vets

I'm so perplexed! My pretty little Pappillon Pomeranian puppy seems to have fleas! I've noticed bugs crawling on him, so I bought flea killer and put it on him.

But i was going through his fur today and htey're STILL there, plus I'm noticing little irritated sores all over his forehead. They're BIG, much bigger than I'm used to seeing flea bites, but i think they HAVE to be fleas.

He's an indoor dog, literally the only exposure he's had in the past two months that could have given him them is 1. Playing with my moms dog outside, must be three weeks ago now. I talked to my mom to have her check HER dog, and she says he doesnt have fleas, and the area they live doesnt have them either-only ticks and biting flies. or 2. Two months ago, playing with my ex boyfriends dog. Jack had NO fleas at that time, however two weeks later I dog sat him and he was having bad flea problems, I was medicating him for them, and inspecting for bites. I've had NO flea bites on myself... and I scrubbed myself up thoroughly before coming home to Santi, but could I have carried them over to him, or might it have just taken them that long to hatch on him from his previous play session with Jack?

And also, what do i do NOW! I dont want an expensive vet bill if its something really stupid, or if the sores are from a nutritional problem, and the bugs ARENT fleas, but I want my puppy to be OK! I already used a monthly flea stuff on him, what else is there? Would a Flea shampoo be more effective, or what other methods a re there of killing my baby's parasites? I've brushed him out thoroughly and looked through most of his fur to see where bites are, what's going on, and put rubbing alcohol over most of his open sores, but what else is there? Its too late to call the vet at this point, and tomorrow I'm supposed to be working all day so I likely wont have time.

Anyone elses pets had something like this?

Okay. There is cleaning involved in this.
Put something like mothballs in your vacuum cleaner bag. Prepare to vacuum the hell out of your place.
There is a rocking flea shampoo called "wild and wooly" that I found at a local store years ago and now cannot even find on google. You can try looking for any shampoo that contains eucalyptus (if I remember correctly). You could use it on dogs of any age.
Feed your dog some garlic, nutritional yeast and brewers yeast.
Make sure your dog is eating a good food and is generally healthy. Digestive enzymes are frequently helpful.

    How old is he?

Fleas can cause anemia...very serious and they can def cause sores esp if the animal is esp allergic to their bites or is scratching a lot.

If he is old enough get Adams flea shampoo. Its the only one sold outside a vets office I trust(dont use ANYTHING made by Hartz EVER) You can get Adams at most big pet store chains.

Wash him well....leaving the shampoo on for a few minutes to kill before you rinse him off.

Go to your vet and get Advantage or Frontline if he is old enough. Dont bother with collars..they dont work. None of them. And some can actually hurt him.

If hes been in your house for more then a day...your best bet is to bomb the house to make sure they are all gone. But if you cant...wash any bedding or clothes that were out in the hottest water possible. Bleach them if they are white.
Get a good carpet flea powder or Boric Acid...(I believe Adams makes one too, but I've never used it) Coat your carpets..keep the dog off them. Let it sit for awile to kill before vacuuming...the moth balls in the vacuum is a good idea too. Throw the bag away IMMEDIATELY after vacuuming.

And adding garlic and brewers yeast to his food is a great idea...it isnt 100% but I've seen people have great luck with it. It basically makes him taste like shit to the fleas so they dont want to bite him.

Fleas are a pain in the ass...but they are more then an annoyance..they can really harm him, esp a little dog... so good luck getting rid of them

It could also be lice. Lice have been going around in dogs more than usual since this summer. Dog lice don't feed on humans, only dogs.

Advantix, any flea shampoo, etc. will kill lice, and washing all the dogs bedding and vacuuming will do the trick, if it is lice instead of fleas.

If they are not fleas they are mites. There is medication otc for this. And if your baby was around another dog that is how it was transmitted.

There are however many types of mites for animals with hair. These do not like our skin too oily. But they love the hair to hide on a dog and the skin to feed.

Go to a pet supermarket and ask. Or look at all the products. Easy to take care of. Bedding for you pet must be washed as well. Even calling a Vet. may give you a few answers you need to hit the petstore for medicated shampoo, and dips to kill these pests.

    Good luck.

    Aw, Poor santi!
I would definately get some advantage medicine. It's gonna be pretty spendy, but it definately works. give him a flea bath beforehand, with special flea/lice repelling shampoo, after the advantage treatment, he cannot be washed or wet without extremely pricey vet prescribed shampoo. i have treated Gina and louie a number of times.

I'm sorry to hear of his discomfort. best friends clinic is a great place to call for advice. I hope he feels better soon. Take care sweetie.

By the way, you had better do a flea bomb for your house. They are probably in your carpet. Man, what a pain. I'm sorry girl.

Thanks guys! Hes just over a year old, soprobably old enough to handle the Frontline stuff, I do need to ask...

Going to go out to the vet store and get the boric acid and Adams shampoo...

The anemia thing DOES concern me a bit, as he's ALWAYS been a gawpy skinny little boy... VERY skinny dog, just doesnt seem to put a lot of meat on his bones. In people, can't that sometimes be a sign of anemia? I do want to get them out of here ASAP, thanks for your advice!

Alsi, its may be a good idea to shorten the length of his hair until you know the fleas are gone. you dont have to shave him, but the less hair the easier it is to spot and destroy them

frontline not a good idea-- that's pretty strong and can give some dogs permanent damage. if you google frontline and try to see the complaints about it you might change your mind.

I second your thoughts on the Frontline... My pits have extremely sensitive skin and do not like that stuff.
my vet reccomends the Advantage medication. It runs around 40 bucks according to my boyfriend who routinely buys it. Although, it my be less for you, due to Santi's size (sold according to weight).
I hope he feels better soon! The poor lil guy! Let me know if I can be of help.

By the way, Gina and Louie seem fine. They do not seem to be itching any more than usual. Sweet of you to be concerned.
