Default So, you want to be an attorney? Major in Drama..

I went in to meet with a councelor at the local JC I will be going to.

And for those who read my other school posts everythings fine now and I get to register for classes the 27th.

Anyway - he asked me what my plan was, etc, etc. And I said well, to transfer to CSUS and maybe/hopefully go to Law School. He asked me my major and I said I dunno? Communications maybe since its pretty broad and a good choice incase I dont go to Law School. Anyway -

He said to be an attorney English used to be the best major but now its Drama?! Literature and acting?! He advised me to take drama as my Arts and Literature courses and that its the prefered major when applying for Law School. I HATE acting. i f*cking HATE it. He said its an easy A - but I was like but I HATE acting... Ill stick with Communications incase I dont end up going to Law School...

It kinda makes sense since its a lot of writing and attorneys get pretty dramatic in court but I want to do Family Law not a Defense Attorney.

I thought it was kinda funny. Anyone else heard this?!

I've never heard that. When I took my LSAT prep course (which was years ago though) the guy who taught the class said philosophy majors tend to do better on the LSAT. I also had an accounting professor in college who said English and accounting are the best majors for law school. I don't think it really matters though. I've known lawyers who had every undergrad degree you could possibly imagine from poli sci all the way to music. I got into law school with a pre-law major.

I've also heard that but it was from a counselor that said English was a great major for medical school.

And an English major teaches you the fundamentals of life sciences HOW? I think she was a bit daffy.

You may not hate acting as much as you think you do--almost every dancer is an actress to some extent. But if you hate going onstage in plays, etc., I wouldn't take his advice.

Communications would be a fine choice, I would think. Ask some lawyers, though--they are likely to have a better idea than that counselor.

Hahaha, that's funny. That was actually my original major/plan, I was a theatre major planning on going to law school. Really, it's not as easy an "a" as they make it out to be, to be honest. That, and at the end of my first year, I realized I wanted a major that I could actually make money at if I decided I *didn't* want to go to law school.

Basically, pick a major that you'll excel at and keep your grades up, law schools aren't super picky about your major as long as you do well and do well on the LSAT.

Never again. I know I hate it because I did a Skinemax movie once and hated hated hated acting. I dont know why they gave me the lead role. It started out fine and I dont know if I hate acting because of the acting part or how they treated me. Id be there from 8-8 with one 30 minute lunch break. On the 4th day they wanted to take the promo shots during my one and only break. That was my breaking point. I went off - f*ck you - f*ck you and f*ck you too... none of the other actors seemed to get why I was so pissed.... THEY had like 2 scenes a day. I was in every single scene in the movie except ONE.

Drama is SO not an easy A, especially if you hate acting. Also-you're an older student, right? It might just seem less feasible for your future that you majored in drama with no intention of doing it. As opposed to a college age kid in love with Rent and then changing their mind. Just a thought that popped into my head.

I've met a number of art history majors who plan to go pre-law (not recommended unless you have the love for art. It's not easy). Also history, poli sci and philosophy. They all make you think, though in different ways, no doubt. Communications at my school is a sorta joke major for kids who can't be bothered, but if yours is not a string of mickey mouse classes, that sounds promising! If you want to do family law though-how about psychology or sociology?

I dunno - it doesnt really matter what my major is while in JC. Im just going to do the general ed courses and go from there. Ill pick my major when I transfer to the University. I just thought Drama was a funny major for Lawyer. I eventually will pick a major one I know what classes I enjoy and what career options are involved with that major... for now I have no clue...

Transactional stuff is slightly less stressful. I'm sure they're out there somewhere, but I have yet to meet one happy attorney.

Yea - but I think a lot of people go into the field not realizing what they got themselves into. Come to think of it Scott did give me a funny look when I said PreLaw. Maybe its not as good as I think it is? Oh, well, no big deal. Not like Im locked into any career choice.

You have lots of options if you're just starting out. Speaking to people who actually work in the field will do wonders to help sort out what you want. What is your interest in the legal field?

I've worked with Attorneys for a very long time...I've met some who were just in it for the money and were miserable with the hours. I've met many, many more who were in it for what they were passionate about and loved the money and the hours. It just depends on who you choose to work for/with.

I think that Philosophy majors do best. But, that's mainly for trial lawyers...drama is good for trial lawyers, as well. But, I wouldn't necessarily recommend Majoring in Drama. Taking classes to learn how to project yourself and how to maintain your composure would be great. If you want to do Family Law, etc...you would probably be better off with a Sociology/Psychology major and some communication minor (Speech, stuff like that).

I have a friend who is a Music Performance major...and is now a lawyer (although in the music biz). I have another friend who is a Public Health Administration Major and a Poli-Sci minor. She's a lobbyist in DC. So, find an area of law in which you feel compelled to practice and get your major in a complementing area.

I want to do family law and it stems from a few things. Personal experiences. Some things just seem so unfair when it comes to parents (and childrens) rights.

My guys attorney overlooks things that seem small when it comes to his case that I see and point out and the reasons for or against and he has to take it to the attorney.

I see women on here dealing with bs with dancing and children. Worried about if the job will interfere with custody.

Children that get stuck in the middle of bs custody battles when it ends up as it would have had they just agreed day 1 rather than 2 years of fighting.

I want to be more of a for the children attorney. Whats best - not lets all fight and get the most we can and make everyone miserable in the process.

My uncle went thru a hardcore custody battle. His attorney said fight fight fight. Her attorney said fight fight fight. Finally he got sick of the fighting and got a new attorney. 2 weeks later everything was settled. I want that. I want to TRY to help with harmony. Sure it may not always happen but I can do my best. Im a helper I guess. If they want to fight fight fight fine - get a different attorney. Ill lay it out from an outside position of whats right with both sides - what will make things best. Not just to be right.

Anywho - theres more but thats just a bit... its hard to get all things from my head onto paper sometimes...

So Im guessing sociology/psycology - since this is all matters with the head/heart... er. pocketbook?

^^It sounds like it would be hard but rewarding. And we KNOW you'd look at both sides when the mom's a stripper or the like! I'm sure psychology, esp child psych would be infinitely helpful to at least take. Seconding VG's idea about taking something to help project yourself, since you'd be dealing a LOT with emotional subjects. Though I think stipper-ness is great training on reading people as well!

This isn't a judgment about all family law attorneys, but a lot of them I knew in Florida were some greedy motherfuckers. They egg the clients on just to fatten up their wallet. I'm talking doctors selling their real estate to pay the $50k + bill for his attorney on a case that isn't over, etc. It happens a lot. You can make some killer money in it, but it is high drama. But all family law attorneys aren't created equal. Just in my experience, family law made me want to shoot myself.

But if you go to law school you don't have to choose your speciality right away. And I say if you don't like drama, don't major in drama. Like I said, I was accepted into law school (both that I applied to in fact) with a pre-law/legal studies degree, which I've heard some people say isn't a good major for law school. I got in though (and dropped out).

And why would Pre-law be bad when you want to be a lawyer?!

I just have to reiterate don't major in drama if you hate drama. Don't even take a class. I took a drama class a couple of years ago, "Fundamentals of Acting," and I was so excited to take it! Man, did it SUCK and I totally HATED it and ended up dropping it. There was way too much self reflection going on in that class, much more than I was comfortable with so I bailed out. I couldn't imagine MAJORING in that (although stage makeup still sounds like a fun class)

^^LOL at the self reflection. One of my friends is an Theatre major and she complains about all the exercises they have to do-getting in touch with their bodies by lying on the ground and putting your legs up until they shake, all this self-study with mirrors, teachers try to psychoanalyze you. Not fun!

Just do liberal studies for now. You don't even need to declare a major until your junior year anyhow.

I always wonder if they make Shakespearean-type actors do that stuff in school. As best as I can tell, the program my friend is in is teaching them how to be insane, overly introspective primadonnas. LOL you'd probably benefit more from public speaking classes if you need them.

Law schools now accept people from every major. The rationale, I believe, is that it leads to a diverse student body. They don't want 100 poli sci majors in a 100 person class (poli sci is still a pretty safe bet though). A drama degree is going to take some explaining though when you go to apply for a job. Unless you work in entertainment law. Then it would show that you are interested in the field. Entertainment law jobs are few and far between in most u.s. cities.

If you are interested in family law then you might want to think about majoring in something that has to do with the topic of families like child development or social work or something. But don't major in that unless you would want to work in that field if you decided not to be an attorney. At least a minor though in undergrad would help you get a family law job in law school which wlll help you get one when you graduate. Of course, being a para-legal in a family law practice prior to going to law school is another good way to get a leg up and/or see if you want to do it.

Whew! I'm done writing. Hope that was useful.
