Default do you think this is impolite?

how many of you consider it to be impolite to say 'huh' if somebody was talking to you and they didn't understand you (and visa versa)
I have been getting crap about this from some people. I never thought it was impolite, i thought it was a quick way to show confusion. but i am not easily offended by people. or i am less sensitive..

I grew up saying "huh?" or "what?" to my family and close friends. When it comes to everyone else I've learned it is more polite to say something like, "I'm sorry. I didn't hear you well enough. Could you repeat what you just said?"

I use it all the time, maybe its a bit rude I certainly wouldn't use it in a formal situation.

I won't say it's always rude but I fucking hate when people say it to me. It sounds like a farmer or something, no offense to y'all.... I also don't like "what?"

I didn't hear you or pardon me are MUCH better

I think in a casual setting it is ok, with friends, family members, etc....howver outside of that I think it could be considered rude, as it makes the person sound like they we not listening in the first place. I would just say "Can you repeat that again?" or ask specific questions about what they were asking about for clarification.

I used to be aweful about this. I don't think it's rude per say, but maybe a little...I don't know..lazy? Something. Like I said, I was really bad with it before, but I tried to remind myself to just say "I'm sorry?" instead. Now it's habit. I just think it sounds better.

I say something along the lines of "Sorry, I didn't hear you". Some people seem to say "huh" and "what" so frequently that, quite honestly, it comes across that they are tuned-out in general and it doesn't take long before I begin to think they are slow, lazy, or just too annoying to talk with. /shoot-me

Okayyyyy, so i now have a habit of putting my ear closer to people and saying "i'm sorry" like that sounds better imho.

But yes, i think huh is not too cool to say to others.

It's about as rude as putting your elbows on the table.

I say "huh" all the time. I guess its not the most intelligent sounding thing, but I don't think it's rude.

Depends. If you're sitting around with a friend or something, it's fine. If you're in a situation where you don't know the person well, you should say "excuse me? or "pardon?" or something like that.

I always say "I'm sorry?" But I'm often misunderstood.

I have to agree, I think overuse of "huh?" sounds absentminded bordering on ign'ant if I don't know the person really well. (And know they aren't absentminded or ign'ant!)

It's not rude, but it's not the most intelligent way to express yourself either.

Not rude. It's just a step away from "Hmmm?", which is certainly not rude.

It depends who you're talking to, of course...and how it's said.

If it's someone I know and we're in a casual conversation, it's okay.

It becomes inappropriate in a more formal setting or with people you don't know well or at all. In those cases, "Pardon me?" "I'm sorry, I didn't hear you." or something of that nature is a better choice.

My mother used to say it was rude, but she's very old fashioned. i use it but it depends on the situation and who it is that i'm speaking to. Like if it's a casual conversation. or someone i'm confortable with i'll use it. If not i'll say "excuse me?" or "i'm sorry?".

I do th 'I'm sorry?' thing too. My first boss drummed it into my head so hard that it's just habit now. She didn't like 'what?' either. Said it sounded rude and uneducated.

I think "huh" is very informal. So it'd be appropriate with friends but not so appropriate in say, a corporate environment.

Fine, but not in a formal setting.

I don't really think "huh" or "hmm" are rude as questions. As responses I find them slightly rude however.
