    Default Question about Jews

OK I moved into the Orthodox Jewish part of town and I am noticing something very odd: Every woman appears to have the exact same hairdo. Seriously. Its like a dark brown bob with bangs and they wear a hairband with it. And they look sorta, well, wiggish!

Is it possible that every female in my neighborhood wears identical wigs? I just can't figure out how they ended up with all the same hairdo!! ITs like the twilight zone around here.

    Any ideas?

It's a wig. I discovered this a couple of years ago. I think the women shave their heads when they get married and then begin wearing wigs.

Google it. That's what I did after I started asking around.

^ (edit: to mermaidnz) What gets me is why I can't get challah (sp?) at a bakery called Goldsteins. Maybe it was wrong of me to assume, but isn't Goldstein a JEWISH name? I want my goddamn challah!!! No, they only sell sourdough bread... wtf?

    Most of the Jewish girls I know have that big Fran Drescher/Amy Winehouse (okay not THAT big, but similar style) bouffant hair... no headband. Hmm. Or, like Yek, they just have.. hair. Like everyone else. o.O;

Yes its possible that they all have the same wigs.
There are very large Jewish communities in Sydney and Melbourne and there are Jews in Qld too, just not many orthdox ones - Goldsteins is obviously a Jewish owned bakery. They were friends of my family when they opened their first bakery back when my mum was a kid which was on the Gold Coast.

I don't know but sorry to kinda go off topic. This just made me think of the time when I dyed my hair and cut it into a bob. I dyed it the bright red with black streaks in the front and someone asked me if I was Jewish. I was like um, no why do you ask? Now I know.

Orthodox women generally wear their hair up under the wig-it's often hella long too! Not sure why they'd all have the same wig, but maybe there's no good wig store? We have a mix of Orthodox/not so Orthodox here and they wear wigs, scarves and/or hats.

And yes, challah is an awesome thing.

They're Haredi Orthodox Jews. Women adhear to strictmodesty standards part of which is coving the hair after marriage. The wigs are commonly used for this reason.

They don't shave their heads underneath (perhaps a small sect does?). The wigs are worn out in public because of modesty customs. So yes, they are probably wearing similar wigs because of functionality, rather than fashion.

^^^^^Yea I was told they are not allow to show thier real hair. I use to work in A neighborhood such as this one. They are real kind people. You are so much better than I. I went to ask them why people look and behave a certain way. They had a restraunt that did not have no diary what so ever, and it cater to all the jewish standards.

I find it endlessly interesting that there are quite a few religions that dictate women cover thier hair.

Oh my gosh, I lived up there when I first moved here. The family I was living with just covered their hair though.

I'd never heard of "Haredi." Here it's the Hassidic Jewish women who wear the wigs.

They might have long hair underneath but I do believe that they first shave their heads when they get married. I guess they let grow long after the shaving.

Haredi and Hassidic Jews both are in the category of Orthodox! Just different types.
