If I remember correctly, they call them sheitels.

in the olden days, wearing one's hair down was the way that prostitutes advertised availability. women who were not in that line of work covered their hair as a distinguishing characteristic.
it's not 'religious' in basis, as such.

It is what it is, not what you want it to become, that's important -- at least for now. Today, remember that things worth having are worth waiting for!

Orthodox Jews (many sects) require married women to cover their hair. It's a modesty thing - as a married woman you are supposed to share it only with your husband. Some sects wear wigs (yes, the Yiddish is sheitel) and others wear snoods.
Some families don't accept wig wearing because it seems like the woman is showing her hair.

"He will come in one of the pre-chosen forms. During the rectification of the Vuldrini, the traveler came as a large and moving Torg! Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor! Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!"

OT, but oh man, challah french toast is amazing. I want some now.
waffles are just pancakes with little squares on them.

That IS pretty interesting. Historically hair has been powerful. Even for men! Remember the Bible story about the man who was super strong as long as he let his hair grow. Then his lover cut his hair in his sleep. He lost his strength. I wonder if mail prowess = sexuality too. Maybe I'm going off on a limb with this one.
Ok can I ask another question?
Why are there so many cars from New Jersey parked at that the Synagogues ALL THE TIME? I am in Toronto- so what would bring them up here?
And the people driving the cars are the Orthodox Jews with the big black hat and ringlets.
There must be some big Toronto - Jersey Jewish connection.

^^ check out jewishtorontoonline.net
I didn't look through the whole site. It's pretty extensive.

there's a HUGE toronto jewish population. i go there 1x a year for a tourney at CHAT (community hebrew academy of toronto).
i agree silverback. this was a great thread, so far.
Love it!

I don't know of any sect that shaves their heads. The whole purpose is to save the beauty for your husband.
Because there ain't no tits on the radio

actually, some do shave. not often, but some.
Love it!

I've never heard of a lubavitcher (a hessidic) jew shaving her head.....
i have an aunt who i've supervised her mikvah (it's a purifying water submersion ritual, it's watched to make sure every part of her, all her hair even, goes under the water) and her hair so so beautiful under her wig. it's oer 2 feet long and thick and perfect. lol. i'm so envious!
but ya, she has that same wig! and so do probably 70% of the married lubavitcher women i know
