Yeah, she's big. But she's not so huge that I can see why they are saying she can't enter the country. I saw people bigger than that walking around the mall...

Jeez, I was expecting to see a pic of somebody so obese they were bedridden!
NZ has just given a whole new meaning to the slogan, "no fat chicks"
Without meaning to sound offensive, I think she is quite big!

^^Funny because there are a ton of obese people in the US. Her size is close to average I'm guessing. She doesn't look huge to me just very much overweight.
After I went to Thailand in April I realized that there are many obese people in the US. Almost everyone over there was in the average weight range according to the BMI index.

Perhaps youre thinking of Morbidly Obese?
From
>>
A person has traditionally been considered to be if they are more than 20 percent over their ideal weight. That ideal weight must take into account the person's height, age, sex, and build.
Obesity has been more precisely defined by the National Institutes of Health (the NIH) as a BMI of 30 and above. (A BMI of 30 is about 30 pounds overweight.)<<
And from
>>
Obesity is a condition describing excess body weight in the form of fat. Morbid obesity is defined as being about 100 lbs. overweight or having a Body Mass Index (BMI) of around 40 or above. Obesity is associated with many illnesses and is directly related to increased mortality and lower life expectancy. <<

yes she is overweight, but, not letting a person into your country is somewhat messed up as I am sure there already are overweigh/obese people in New Zealand *cough*Peter jackson*cough*...
They do a series of health checks on everyone who wants to emmigrate. It depends on the type of health problem etc.
My best friend emmigrated to NZ last year and she is not a slim girl, so obviously you dont have to be skinny to get in, theres is just a limit.
Im also thinking (- without meaning to sound rude again!) that America has had a much bigger problem with obesity than the rest of the world for a lot longer. What we may consider to be pretty big over here may not seem so huge to you guys. No offense meant.
Sucks for Arnold Schwarzenegger (15 years ago), Maria Calo, Ronnie Coleman, Jay Cutler, and myself (at 190lbs now). We're all technically "overweight".

I was expecting to see a pic of a morbidly obese woman.
And I hear what you're saying about America. When I went to Quebec City with my friend, I felt like a fat American. Seriously.![]()

I'm surprised they're using the BMI. Wouldn't measuring their fat percentage be a better indicator of fitness and health?
Absolutely. Why import burdens on your welfare system? Just because we let anyone in the US doesn't mean it's a good idea.Well, it makes sense since it is a country of social medicine.
Idealism is fine, but as it approaches reality, the costs become prohibitive.

Since the country has socialized med care, I can't say I disagree with this. She is overweight. She's more than chubby. She doesn't look fit at all. I'm using the term "fit" loosely too. I'm not saying she should be skinny or anything like that. She's more than "thick."
um, steroids? that's another health risk.I hope you're not taking them.
Never touched an illegal drug in my life. I just meant to make the point that overweight isn't all it's cracked up to be. The woman in the pic is obese, but she's not as big as several hundred people I've seen. I don't know about laws in that country, but is it even legal to deny her access? Seems so wrong.![]()

^^^^ cool. But you compared yourself to juiced guys. I guess you have insane genetics. It happens!

Yes it is perfectly legal to deny her access. I went through the sameexact health check she had to go through. You cannot be considered a drain on the public health care system. Period. People pay their taxes so CURRENT citizens can get the benefits they need. If someone pops up, they are draining society's resources. Also, if someone with previous conditions enters, it shows she might have tried to marry under false pretences to get the health care she couldn't get in her home country (which I still think she can, but still). ALSO, since NZ and Australia are proposing PAYING the obese to go on diets (no joke, I read about it a few weeks ago in the paper) from government money so that people are healthier, it seems like she could be scamming the government. Even thought she's probably not, it needs to be made certain that, upon entering the country, she can take care of herself and not burden the country.
When entering a country you have to prove that you can take care of yourself. Financially. Physically. Emotionally. They test you for ALL of these things. If you don't pass, you don't get in.
Also if you look at her BMI and the BMI it takes to be 'morbidly' obese - she is. Flat out. 40 is morbid, and her partner was 42 and could barely make it, so what was she? By health regulations, she is unable to come into the country.
And if she's just going to 'give up' because she's not going to get skinny by Christmas, well, then that's not a real good looking relationship to begin with, immigrationally speaking.

... that lady isn't morbidly obese imo.

Not in your opinion, but by medical standards, she is, which is why she was rejected.

I think we need to re-define "morbid obesity..." the "morbid" part does not mean she is about to die because of her weight or complications around it, it only means that her weight/bodyfat percentage increases her chances for medical problems.
The clinical definition of "morbid obesity:" Morbid obesity also known as clinically severe obesity is an abnormal obesity defined as the condition of having body weight over 100 lbs over an ideal body weight or having the body mass index of 40 or higher.
So.... yes, that would make her morbidly obese. While I think it's wrong for immigration to size-discriminate, at the same time, I can understand not wanting to burden a health care system using tax dollars for obese immigrants.
I think we americans are just WAY too used to seeing obesity we've become almost indignant about it.

^ totally. when i think morbidly obese, i think people with gunts wearing sweatpants all the time.

^ hahaha i think of all the news programs that only show big distended bellies walking around as if the bellies don't have faces attached. i'm always afraid that if i ever get that fat, MY faceless belly will end up on the evening news. AYY!!!!
