Default 24hour fitness bodybugg and losing weight

Anyone go there? They have this device called a bodybugg (www.bodybugg.com) and it measures how many calories you burn as long as you wear it.

I have one. Now, I have always had a problem dropping weight. Even when I worked out for 1 1/2-2 hours/day, 5-6 days per week and ate around 1300 cal. a day I didnt really lose any weight. Well this bodybugg thing told me that even when I work out HARD (keeping my heart rate up b/w 155-175 bpm,or about 70-90% max heart rate) for an hour I only burn like 200 calories. That's crazy little calories to burn! But it explains why I dont lose weight. And my bf % is around 20%. I do an hour cardio HARD like I said and lift for a half hour. Yet I gain weight sooooo easy and it is incredibly hard for me to lose it. This is why I am considering lipo.

My friend Sherry used mine, and she burns calories like a normal person, around 600/hour of medium to hard cardio. She dropped 7 lbs in a week b.c she could track her calories better wearing it. makes me sad i burn so few.

Does anyone know how to make me burn more calories? LIke, make my body less efficient at burning caloreis so I am more normal? 'cause I hate having to work 3x as hard as most ppl to lose weight...

but I do reccomend getting one. I see so many ppl losing a lot of weight with them. I'm just wierd...

Weight training burns many more calories than cardio alone. While your body repairs itself from the muscle fibers that have been torn during weight training it uses calories 24/7 to do that. Cardio burns calories for the time doing the activity. Also, to loose weight faster it is recommended to weights then cardio.

If something like the body bug, trainer, life coach, best friend gym buddy can motivate you to loose the weight you want then go for it.

Things like the bodybug are just calorie trackers. They don't help people lose weight. Its all in their heads. It just makes people more aware of their food intake and activity levels. You can do this much cheaper by writing down what you eat and how much of it on paper or online free food diary. I read somewhere that more than 24 hours without physical activity (ie eliptical, running, etc) your ability to burn calories starts to slow down. Weight training + cardio just keep your calorie burning levels high. Like adding a mound of firewood to a furnace to keep it running all night long.

Also, you just had a baby didn't you? I'm not a mommy, but I'm sure some sw mommies here can say that your body goes through a mound of changes during and after the pregnancy as well.

When you get the chance tell us what you are eating every day.

Like I said, I work out about 6 days a week, and lift 3-4 days/wk for about half hour, maybe 45 min. on a good day. That bodybugg doesnt track what you eat, but calculates how many cal. you burn.
Here's what I eat on an average day:
    Breakfast
1/4 c. Eggbeaters with spinach, mushrooms, and onions, scrambled. (appx. 80 cal)
1/2 c. Fiber One Cereal made with water, like oatmeal (160 cal)
    Coffee w/ milk (45 cal)

    Snack:
    100-calorie snack pack

    Lunch
Turkey sandwich made with low-cal bread (130 cal)
Salad w/ carrots and cherry tomatoes (180 cal)

    Snack
    100-cal pack popcorn

    Dinner
Lean Cuisine w/ extra veggies on the side and slice of low calorie bread (320 cal)

    Snack
    Coffee (45 cal)
    Low-Cal yogurt w/ blueberries (100 cal)

So that's only about 1300 calories. I keep a food journal so I know that some days I get as high as 15-1600, but not always.
Any help is appreciated since I'm stuck at 139-140 lbs. I want to lose like 10-12 lbs, but it's not coming off. I've been trying for the whole month so far and managed to lose 1 lb.

Maybe you should actually eat a little bit more. Like, 1500 calories?

Also, when you do cardio, add a lot of resistance. For example, put the treadmill on a hill, or jack the bike resistance up high.

You should try interval training. That is supposed to boost the calorie burn.
From what I've read, the best thing to do is do 30 minutes of normal, stead cadrip on a treadmill or something, then do 15 minutes of intervals, or one day do 30 minutes of steady cardio, the next day only do 15 minutes of intervals. The interval training is hard. if you do it right, 15 miuntes is al you need. like, run for 1 minute as hard as you can, back off and job for 30 second, go all out again for 1 minute, and keep alternating.

One, you are not taking in enough calories to sustain your body doing the workouts you do. You will never find a competitive body builder eating 1300 calories and working out as hard as they do. They all eat upwards of 2200 calories (a day, not week).

Calories are totally misunderstood. You don't lose weight by cutting calories. You lose weight by cutting bad fats. That "100-calorie" snack pack is probably one of your problems. They are NOT healthy for you.

Now, weight train, eat more (healthy food choices), and stop stepping on the scale.

You say that you are 20% body fat...what do you want to get down to? 20% is actually on the very low spectrum of BF% for women. When I was 22% BF, I was still weighing in at around 128-130.

Also...your cardio is wrong. You don't lose weight by MAINTAINING a workout HR at 70%. You lose weight when your body doesn't know what's happening. Which is why you need to invest in learning HIIT (High Intensity, Interval Training). See...what your body does (when you work out the way you are currently) is go into "preservation mode"...meaning simply that it begins conserving energy because you are going at a steady pace. Your body works hard to NOT burn those calories (ESPECIALLY if you are not intaking enough calories--energy--to effectively sustain it). With HIIT, your body goes from a slow, steady heart rate to an increased heart rate, to a lower heart rate, to a faster heart rate, and so on. Your body cannot sustain conservation efforts that way. You're working out in spurts and THAT is what fuels fat loss.

That all being said, utilize HIIT in your workouts. Incoprorate weights into your routine every other day. EAT MORE.

And dehydration...I don't know how much water you are drinking, but you should be drinking about 1/2 your body weight in oz PER DAY. More if you drink caffeine, smoke, or work out (your mouth should feel moist, your skin should look dewey).

Stay off the scale. Numbers are deceiving. The fit of clothes you love is the way to go.

Also, take pics of yourself (full body in a bikini) every 2 weeks. You may not think you are changing much because you see yourself (obviously) every day. But, taking pictures and comparing them gives you a totally different perspective. You notice that BIG changes that happened a little bit that way...and it will help you see that all of your hard work is paying off.

    Hope that helps.

Also wanted to add: you are not getting enough healthy fats (avocados, etc). You need to add that to your diet. And fruits and veggies. You need more of them. And, cut the Lean Cuisine...it's not healthy.

    Ok...done.

    ^ Very good advice.

I do want to push the interval training as well... I know a lot of women who go to the gym and pedal on the elliptical thing for an hour at a low restistance level and never notice any changes. Well, it's kinda burning calories, but it's not challenging your muscles at all, which is where you get the best calorie burn and also the best toning.

When I do cardio, I only do it for 15-20 minutes, but I go fast and HARD. I go so I'm panting and my muscles are pushing. The best thing is to start light (3 mins or so), then get moderate for a couple minutes, and then go hard for a couple minutes, moderate for a minute, and repeat. Or something along those lines. I hate cardio and I find it boring, but with this sort of routine along with weight training and 1700 calories per day I was able to drop my body fat from 21% to 18% in the span of a few months.

I do interval training 2-3 times a week. I put the treadmill on an incline (mine goes from 0-13, ill put it on and run for 30 seconds, then walk fast for 1.5 minutes. I do that for 20 minutes. But then I also add in a half hour of steady cardio as well. if im not doing the interval, then I do 50 min. steady cardio. and like i say, i weight train 30-40 min, 3 days a week normally.

I will eat differently, add in more home cooked stuff instead of the lean cuisines.

So I should eat more, work out less?

I just hate being 5'4" and 140. that's bigger than Ive been in looooong time. Before being preggers, I was 132 and 21% bf. I want to be back around 130.
I just can't believe what the bodybugg was telling me. Is it really possible to be burning only 200 calories in an hour when doing that previously mentioned cardio?

The 50 minutes of steady cardio is a total waste of time. You will burn less calories doing steady cardio than you will doing interval (properly) in 25-30 minutes. Just drop the steady cardio and do interval cardio 3 days a week. In between those days, you do weight training. And, those weights should not be pansy weights, either. No using 5 lbs weights and doing 12 sets of 12. Your muscles should be pushed to exhaustion when weight lifting. I mean, if you're used to squatting your body weight down to pick something up during the day and walking around carrying 140 pounds of weight...do you really think that the little 20 lb weight on the hamstring curl is doing anything?

You need to eat more. Your body NEEDS around 1300-1500 calories a day just to run itself (for you to move, be alert, and just the normal functions of your body daily). When you work out, you increase your food intake. If you are eating healthy foods, you will not gain weight (you'll actually lose weight). Eating more calories per day when you are working out will give you the energy to really push yourself. If you are continually eating 1300 calories a day (which we've already established is insufficient), your body will work harder to conserve those calories to use for it's daily tasks. Bump your caloric intake up (to say, 1800 - 2000 calories a day) and your body will have enough to sustain its daily tasks AND have the energy to effectively fat burn.

Remember, calories burned does not equal weight loss. Fat loss equals weight loss. Get rid of the calorie counter. It's not good. Go by BMI (body mass index). Invest in good quality calipers and learn how to use them.

Calories is a measurement of energy. Fat is a measurement of weight.

    Lose fat...not calories.

This is SOOOO true!! Most women are afraid to add lots of weight or resistance. You will not bulk up, but your muscles will tone and repair faster. When you do weights, you should only be able to do about 4-6 on your heaviest (last) set.
