    Default Sewing Costumes

I'm really interested in sewing outfits for myself, I was hoping maybe you lovely ladies had some good resources that would help me get started? I've done some hand and machine sewing, not a lot, so I need to work on that as well, but I've also never worked with different fabrics like silk or sequins or anything.

So do ya'll have any websites or books that are helpful, not only sewing stripper outfits, but sewing in general???

    Thanks.

Not a website, but a MUST have book is the Reader's Digest Complete Guide to Sewing - http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Guide.../dp/0762104201

also, there are usuallly local sewing places where you can take lessons.

to learn to sew with dancer/bathing suit material and sequins and stuff, tell them you want to make you niece or daughter a dress up costume for her birthday..... lol. alot of those women are older and pretty conservative!

also, read a lotof sewing books from the library, buy cheap material that stretches 4 ways, get a machine, and practice a lot!

oh, and i don't recomend something delicate like silk for stripper outfit!

You'll definitely want a serger machine if possible. It allows you to work with stretchy materials.

I completely second that! I've had this book for YEARS and love it!

I've done alterations, custom sewing, costuming, etc. for years, and I have a few reccommendations:]

*First, one major advantage of sewing is that you can design clothing to fit your figure and style. What areas do you want to accentuate? What things do you want to hide? It's not just about using fabric to cover the bad parts, but about using seaming and cuts to accentuate and draw the eye where you want it. If you have questions, just PM me...

*Second, I would not work with stretchy fabrics (with the exception of SOME knits) without a serger, but you CAN work with chiffon and other types of wovens by using French seams and other hand-finishing techniques (that RD book is a good resource).

*Third, remember that what makes a garment look professional is attention to detail. It's those finished seams, good design, custom fit, etc. that make the difference between professional and obviously amateur.

*Fourth, pick an easy design for your first garment. I'd even recommend something as simple as a black chiffon gown or something.

*Fifth, don't underestimate the use of a test garment (see the RD book for details). Much of the fabric you'll use for costumes is going to be fairly expensive, so doing a test garment can help you tremendously.

*Sixth, PM me with any specific questions. I'd be happy to help!
