    Angry Grocery Coupons

So I went to the supermarket to get a few groceries yesterday and i was third on the line waiting to get rang up. The old big guy ringing his stuff up must have had like 40 grocery coupons. It took over 15 minutes to finish ringing him up, becasue some of the coupons had to be scanned twice or put in manually. I'm standing there wondering, mad, because someone decides to bring their lifetime's worth of coupons on the day that I decided to shop....i mean, who saves grocery coupons in bulk nowadays anyway? the supermarket has its own discounts shoppers can take advantage of on a regular basis. i can understand saving a few coupons for other products besides food, but come on, most of the groceries were on sale anyway.
I guess no one could do much anyway, but that was really annoying.

edit: my post was mean so i rewrote it.

i think coupons are a smart idea. why not save as much as you can? i hope that you can take a step back and realize that this is not something to be worked up about.

lol I know what you mean. It's usually the old school shoppers with tons of coupons. I take the extra time though to remind myself I need to slow down instead of fuming about it.

Hey, I'm not "old" anything and I am the coupon queen! With gas prices being what they are, ya gotta save money in whatever way you can. Besides, most of the things you see on the supermarket shelves are way over-priced anyway. ($4 for a little box of cereal?! You've gotta be shitting me!) I've been known to end up saving more than I actually paid for my groceries!

^^^ people can get worked up over anything...imo i'm not saying don't save your coupons, but i'm just amazed by the odds of me getting stuck in a situation like that. not too many customers save coupons like that and the fact that i was stuck in a situation like that; when a customer decides to bring his lifetime's worth of coupons on the day i was in a hurry, made me a bit frustrated. it happens. people get frustrated over getting stuck on a long line and a host of other things. of course i didn't do anything about it because thats life. and if i had the chance, i wouldn't have changed it, because i learned patience from that encounter. i just had to share my thought about the whole situation...just a way of venting off a bit.

Well, maybe an old guy (or girl) on a fixed income who needs to make every penny count (may also have plenty of time). Others may include starving students, families trying to survive on low wages, struggling immigrants, to name a few.

Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor! Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!"

so your mad at the guy with coupons because he inconvenienced you??

I can see frustrated that your in a hurry and the supermarket was busy, but, to take it out on this one person because he had coupons doesn't make sense to me.

LJ is right, with gas and everything else through the roof it makes sense to actually save as much as possible; be it coupon, buying in bulk, etc..

I'm sorry i just don't see the point of your post about this 1 person in particular.

I didn't take it out on anyone. I was only annoyed by how i was stuck in the situation. I mentioned how he had inconvenienced me, because I was in a hurry. which happens to everyone sometimes.

Its not my problem if you don't find the point of the post, because alot of people do. In the body of the post, I was also curious which led me to how many people save up coupons?this happens to be the main addressed in the post, besides the ranting part.so far alot of people mentioned how saving coupons do benefit them one way or another an dhow they are used to it. so yea, if my post doesn't make sense to you, it makes sense to some people at least.

man, when I was in college my roommates and I were the coupon kings.

The secret is, redeem coupons for stuff you don't even have. If you buy enough stuff, the checkout chick won't check em, she'll just push em through.

Now that I think of it, that might not work these days because of UPC codes.

Whatever...coupons, if you have a lot of them, can save you money.

I get the local newspapers, plus I keep an eye out at the supermarket for the in-store dispensers they have out. There's also a lot of websites out there that help to track grocery prices so that you can plan to buy things when they're on super-duper sale and you've got coupons. This article gives some interesting suggestions. MSN Money also has a lot of other articles if you look it up (I just typed in "grocery savings" and got a bunch of stuff). It's sometimes tedious trying to keep track of sales and coupons, but I've found that it can be really worthwhile. I notice a huge difference between when I use coupons and when I don't.

I really love the membership style cards that will print out more coupons at the end of your transaction. Depending on the store, sometimes they'll take off automatically for the current transaction too. But it's an extra nice bonus to use the paper coupons and save more money. Though, I wish there was coupon card of some sort (not store specific, but general and universal) that could add/deduct all those coupon values, so people don't have to stash all those paper coupons in their wallet/purse. Anyone know of such a system? That would be rad.

There were no other lines you could have joined? What about self-check outs? We always go to those first because those normally go faster and I've never seen people use coupons there. Sometimes we even go up to the help desk and they'll check us out quickly if we only have a few items.

My mom used as many coupons as she could because she had to take care of herself, my father and us (5 girls). Yeah it took a little longer to finish and it required patience on everyone's part but my mom saved a LOT of money almost every time. She would at least save 20 bucks each time which I think is worth it.

I used to be a member of one of those sites that help you find coupons. There was a member's area where everyone could post how much they bought and how much money they saved each time. It was amazing. Majority of them spent around 100 dollars and was able to get it down to like 10 bucks with their coupons.

I use coupons sometimes. I know that waiting in line sucks, period. But there's a lot of other things that can cause the line to move slow. Most people also have somewhere to be and a time to be there.. but patience is a virtue. If this is your biggest complaint, you must live a great life, haha.

i wished they had self checkout. they only had 3 registers open and there were a few customers ahead on the lines with their WIC papers to be signed and approved at the registers. so the lines were even longer from people having to wait. the express lane was longer than the regular lanes, and if you dare move to a line that you think is getting shorter, if not lucky enough, you'll find yourself stuck in that line.
