I want to know it all!

Lately I've really been wanting to learn more about life in general...existence. What are we here for? What is really gonna happen to us when we die? When was the beginning of time? What else is out there besides us and our world? I just want to know as much as I can. It just drives me crazy that there is no way to possibly know all these things, atleast not in my lifetime.
I get really nervous about the thought of death...I've actually already made a thread about that a while back. Does anyone else think this much? Any suggestions for books or anything?
BTW, I am a person of faith and sometimes I feel like I am questioning my religion...which I don't think you're supposed to do. I don't know-I just wish I could stop wondering and questioning and just live my life.
    So...Am I weird yet? lol

You're not weird. And OMG you just reminded me of my past as a Jehovah's Witness. We'd LOVE finding "your types" at the door. I don't mean this badly at all in case it seems like it. Just try not to open your door to the next JW!

Can I ask how old you are? I wonder if there's a correlation between these thoughts and someone's age.

I've never wondered these things because I was raised with "the answers." Now that I'm not a JW, I don't care about these things so much. BUT I do believe in some sort of reincarnation. I don't know HOW we reincarnate but energy is never completely destroyed. It's transformed into something else. I can't imagine us to be any different. Especially since we're energy too.

Regarding your interst in the subjects, you might want to check out different religions and philosophers. Not to convert. Just for study. A GREAT resource is ......... augh! I can't remember the name of the organization but maybe someone else will. It deals with all the world religions and philosphies.

Nah I never open my door for JW's, and if I do, I tell them I'm not interested. They are too aggressive for me. I don't really want to convert into another religion but I love learning about them. I think they're all connected in one way or another anyway.
    Oh and I'm 22
What made you stop being JW?

What are we really here for?

Who knows? My personal belief is that we're here because of evolution/biological processes - in effect blind chance. All we can do is make the best of our existance by filling it with as much happiness as possible.

What's going to happen to us when we die?

I'm an atheist so I think that's the end of me when I'm dead and gone. Other people take comfort in religion and the thought there's an afterlife.

When was the begining of time?

15 - 20 billion years ago at the big bang. Neither time nor space existed bfore the big bang.

    What else is out there?

Hopefully other civilisations, but nothing's been discovered yet. Seti (Search for Extra-terrestial Intelligence is a significant field in astronomy).

    ------------

My personal take is that life is far too interesting not to invest the time in learning as much about it as possible.

When Socrates was in the comdemned cell on his last night on earth, he heard a poet outside singing some lyrics by the poet Stesichoros. Socrates asked the singer to teach him the poem. The singer asked why a man in his position wanted to know them. Socrates said "I want to die knowing one thing more".

That's not a bad philosophy to live by.

I'm 50 now - and have been interested in the questions you mention since I've been 10 or 12. I'll never know all the answers, but that won't stop me trying to find them. Every day I try and "learn one thing more".

It really is as simple as that.

    Phil.

I stopped being a JW because I'm not a follower. I'm not a sheep. I don't need religion. I naturally feel like I have a strong connection to God/the Universe (I see God and Universal energy as the same thing).

Of course there's a big long story that went along with it but I left February 1st of 2000. I was either 21 or 22.

I believe that since all matter is made from the same basic particles then we really never die. We will always exist just not in the form that we consider to be "I". So.....I have that going for me.

LuckiCharm, answers to these questions cannot be found anyplace other than your own heart. Tell you what; live your life bravely, have dreams, don't be afraid to love but be wary of those who you allow into your inner sanctum of trust. In the meantime I'll travel to the ends of the universe, visit a few stars, watch over a peaceful sunset and burn another spinach souffle -- and if I happen come across the answers to your questions I'll get back with you. I might need to borrow fiddy cents to catch the next bus.

Actually, I already have my own answers to some of your questions but alas they are only my answers. Still, in answer to your first question "why are we here?", I offer this:

*smiling* (some peeps are gonna think I am nuts) ehhhmmmmm

The purpose of mankind is to demonstrate, in the Court of Heaven and against a charge brought foward by Lucifer, that God is justified to function in grace based on a one time positive exercise of free will.

I bet you wish you had not asked that question now. *teasing*

You are not alone in asking these questions; other spirits seek the same answers.

"I think, therefore I am" .....You are just "existing" as a sentient being.

    You are not weird.

It's OK to question your religion.

Don't waste a moment in life on fear. Life is eternal. & No two people will ever agree on everything. You are entitled to your own interpetation of what life is as long as it doesn't include violating the basic rights of others...(IMO.)

This thread gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. Bless you, you are awakening.

I would like to know everything too. And I think about life and death every day. When you find out, tell me.

That's my definition of "reincarnation." This is the kind of reincarnation I get down with.

I always wondered this too. I was raised as a christian but at age 15 realized it was too illogical and not right for me. I have found most of my answers in Buddhism and eastern philosophies, along with evolutionary biology.

Nothing bothers more about religion and "faith" than this right here. The basic premise is plain out scary to me. Put all intellect aside. Put all curiosity aside. Don't think. Don't ask. Just STFU and believe what misc other humans wrote thousands of years ago, many times re-translated, selectively picked from (i.e., a lot of what was written is not in whatever you have faith in), stir, and you have what?

To be quite honest, I think a lot of questions like "what is the meaning of life" are just plain out bad questions, but likewise, I think the notion that it's evil/wrong to question what you are questioning is about the worst possible "sin" if there is such a thing. You have an intellect. You have curiosity. It is a shame to waste them.

    IMHO.

I gave up interest in eastern philisophies myself, but I do feel that once I started reading about evolutionary biology, my entire outlook on life and human behavior changed. I still predict that in a decade or so it will increasingly become main stream in colleges. I find it to be a bright clear light in otherwise amazingly screwed up mish-mash of PC social theories of the moment BS.

I have been thinking about these things for awhile. It usually makes me feel like my head will implode with too much information when I go looking into it.
