    Default Motor City most dangerous

Again--but I guess they don't go by Murder City anymore. Detroit has had that dubious honor more then once. Philly took over briefly for a while, I forget where it went after that.

I grew up there, they would talk about it on the news, etc., so when I saw this headline in Yahoo, I knew instantly Detroit would be the one, haha!

I still think Ella Bully-Cummings should step down and be replaced by Robocop.

Did you grow up in city proper or the suburbs?

City proper. A couple blocks from 7 Mile and Southfield Expressway. I can't use it to claim urban badass status, since I was just growing up and really small for my age (late grower). It was just til I was 13.

I have visited the city a few times since then. What's surprising to some people, considering its notorious reputation, is that the city has a really good art museum! Back in the day when the big 3 auto companies ruled the world, they pumped a lot of money into it.

Sorry, I'm digressing in my own fucking thread, lol!

Yeah, I always liked Robocop because it was set in Detroit. Those River Rouge factories were famous.

The DIA has just been completely redone. I live just a few blocks from it. The grand re-opening is that day after Thanksgiving. I can't wait. Definitely worthy of a road trip. Wouldn't recommend checking out the old neighborhood though....7 mile...blech.

Optimus Prime would make an excellent new city council leader, don't you think?

I love Detroit's greektown. Outstanding restaurants and delis. It is a rough city but I really appreciate the differences from western cities in terms of architecture. On the other hand, I have never been somewhere in the U.S that has so many abandoned burned out houses. that makes me sad. I wish that the economy would improve in this city and make it better for it's inhabitats. Wish the government would do something about funding improvements to the city. Yeah right huh?

I am from an economically depressed town in central Illinois, so I feel a kind of kinship to Detroit.

I forget how different that part of the country is. I live in oregon now and when I go back for visits, i get serious culture shock. Or shock of lack of culture. I don't mean to offend anyone by saying that. It's where I was born and raised but I found it eventually to be, widely limited. now I find it peaceful.

I can understand that. I was prepared for my urban college experience on the South Side of Chicago by growing up in Detroit. There were areas there that were far worse than the average neighborhood in Detroit. I only had one problem in 5 years there (my SO was a year behind me and we wanted to move to Austin together).

I never had much problem at all, I kind of liked it. But after being in Austin and Daytona for many years, when I went back it took a while to feel relaxed. Being in rough biker bars, etc. isn't the same as a nasty urban area at all.

I haven't been anywhere near my old neighborhood (7 mile) since I was in college, and even then it was not at all safe. I think its gotten much worse.

Haha! Optimus Prime with Robocop as police chief, I like it!

I don't really put a lot of stock in this report because of certain details that don't make the headlines, like the fact that certain cities don't report their data and therefore don't make the list.

If you look at the whole list (here's last year's edition), you'll see that often the "most dangerous" and the "safest" cities are often right next to one another. The former are the rotting inner cities, and the latter are the surrounding suburbs where all the rich people fled to. Umm gee, you take the money and jobs out of a city and crime increases. What a surprise.

Besides that, while there's a bad stigma of being #1 on this list, I doubt you're that much more likely to be mugged or murdered in Detroit than in the #2, #3, #5 or #25 city on the list.

I just have to say, I SO don't miss the D. Moving away was the best thing I ever did for myself and I highly suggest it for all who are still stuck there. So many better places to live...

I do miss all the hip hop radio stations tho.

Damn..Detroit knocked out Camden NJ?? I know my birthplace had the honors a few years ago.

Does this mean I cant tell people I'm from "the hood" anymore? Boo...

Yeah, there are always places to go that can get you killed or maimed, almost anywhere you live, LOL. Still, I think Detroit's reputation for violent crime frequency is pretty well deserved.

Cameron, you can tell people you are from anywhere you want...

LatinaRose, I have heard great things about Toronto, how do you like it?

I saw that report on MSN . When I think of Detroit I think of snow , mounds of burning tires and angry looking thugs in puffy jackets. Is that inaccurate ?

Dirty snow, yeah in the winter. Not so many mounds of burning tires, that I knew of. Thugs in puffy jackets, maybe a few more than in other cold cities, lol.

Basically it's just a formerly very vigorous city that's been decaying for a long time--since the 70's really. The fact that the auto industry is in such dire straights has hit Detroit pretty hard, and in spite of the efforts to revitalize downtown, I don't see it becoming a cool city again anytime soon.

Since it has had the highest murder rate in the nation twice, at least, I'd say there's something to the reputation for violence.

The one good thing that's come out of the city is a lot of really good music. Oh, and LatinaRose, of course...

I moved away from there 14 years ago. I worked in some of the worst areas including Highland Park. If you knew where to stay away from you were okay. When I moved to my new location (vegas) people always were telling me about the bad areas, and where not to go. Being the kind of person who loved cruising bad areas just cause I was homesick (sort of) I realized one thing. Compared to Detroit, this town is like amateur night.
