Bloomberg is reporting that, thanks to mergers & acquisitions deals, carry trade profits, currency / interest rate speculations etc. conducted early in 2007 by the big Wall Street firms, the average Christmas bonus for financial firm workers is going to be in the $200,000 ballpark. This is certainly a 'lagging indicator' since it constitutes the payout of profits actually earned many months ago. However, it is REAL MONEY ... and undoubtedly some portion of this bonus money will find its way to Manhattan clubs in December and January !
