Do you tip your personal trainer?

Honestly, the idea had never occurred to me until a friend mentioned the tip she had given her trainer. I've googled it and it does seem to be an accepted practice. Is this appropriate? Expected? What is the proper procedure? I've purchased 8 sessions which incidentally are up right before Christmas. Should I give him a cash gratuity when our sessions are up (a Christmas bonus, if you will) and how much?

No, tipping personal trainers is not expected. It might be appropriate to give your doctor or your hairstylist a small gift around Christmastime because they provide long-term service to you, but your personal trainer is brand new.

I think it would be a friendly gesture to give them a card or some candy (well, maybe not a PT, lol!) but still not expected.

No. They're in business for themselves, so I don't tip them.

Well, honestly...it depends on how well you feel they've been training you. If they work at a club...all that stuff.

If you feel like they've really turned your body around...and they work at a club...I would definitely advise tipping. People do not realize how hard it is to drum up clientele at a club and make a good amount of money. They usually make about 40% of what you actually pay the club. So, they would probably really appreciate the tip. Of course, they would also appreciate your repeat service, as well.

For a trainer who works for themselves and not out of a club, they're getting 100% of whatever you are paying them. Just your repeat service to them, I believe, is plenty. I never felt that they should be tipped.

    That's my thought, though.

    that's a good point. ^

I think a gift certificate would be a good gesture. make it to somewhere you know they like, or some place generic, like target maybe. a certificate is better then cash, imo, b/c it makes them spend it on fun stuff!

I do not tip my girl, and she does work for the club. But I will get her an Xmas card. Perhaps I'll include something small in it.

I've never tipped a trainer. The one I work with now I pay directly.

Trainers who work for gyms deserve a tip in my opinion. They get paid so little in comparison to what the client/trainee pays the gym for sessions.

Tipping an independent trainer doesn't make any sense. All the money goes to their business anyways. Gifts, on the other hand, are very common.

    I'm an independent trainer btw.

He works for the gym and the price I paid was more inexpensive than I anticipated: $176 for 8 (1 hour) sessions. Not only that, he got me a free extra session because I had to cut our second workout short because I was sick.

    What would be appropriate?
