Default Possible proportional representation initiative in California this June.

I heard something about this on the radio, but didn't pay much attention. Here is one article about changing to proportional representation for the Electoral College in California,

I don't know if this would really make much of a difference in the November election next year or if it's all "smoke & mirrors."

^^^ I fully support proportional representation in presidential elections as it more closely approximates every vote being counted. Under the present 'winner take all' electoral system, in a large state like California with a population of say 35 million LEGAL residents, the presidential candidate who achieves a majority of the California vote in effect receives the voting support of all 35 million California voters. Thus the presidential candidate who achieves a majority of the California vote cashes in on the same 35 million electoral college voting strength regardless of whether they carried the majority with 51% or 75%. The disparity between a 51% majority and a 75% majority that is 'ignored' by the current system in fact exceeds the population of a whole bunch of other states with smaller populations whose electoral votes ARE counted !

Another benefit of electoral college reform would be to eliminate population based voting weight in favor of counting actual votes. This is particularly important in an era where populations now contain large amounts of residents who are NOT eligible to vote i.e. illegal aliens. If illegal aliens are counted in census figures, then in effect the electoral college system counts the weight of their votes ... which 'coincidentally' happens to inflate the voting weight of Democratic districts !!!

PS the present 'winner take all' electoral college system also virtually rules out a successful third party candidacy for president, for the obvious reason that 32% = 0% in a 3 way election.
