Default Being gay in the 80's (my beautiful laundrette)

I'm writing a paper over the screenplay My Beautiful Laundrette for my Brit Lit class, and I'm trying to find the points between the characters personal and public lives and specifically where they clash. So far 've been writing about Johnny and Omars differences in upbringings and the social expectations that follow them. But I like making my papers sexual. Just feel it makes things more interesting. I want to write a paragraph or two about how being gay in London in the 80's and also being a pakistani buisness owner in love with a fascist white employee would connect socail and personal lives to historical events. But I know nothing about London in the 80's or about being gay. Anyone know someone who lived through the 80's as a gay man of color in London. Experiences?
