Default cranberry juice, read the fine print.

    okay ya'll.

i've had serious chronic uti's since i was around 7-8 years old. everyone told me the same thing, don't take bubble baths, drink cranberry juice, yada yada. i did, and it didn't help.

so here lately my flare ups have started again and last saturday at work it was so extremely painful that i actually went to talk to my boss about letting me go home for an hour to treat and clean myself and to get a fresh pair of undies. all the girls at work were telling me "drink that cranberry juice girl!"

so i went to the grocery store yesterday. i looked and looked, and finally found 100% cranberry juice. something told me to read the fine print. it's not 100% at all... it's cranberry FLAVORED juice! so like, apple juice with cranberry flavor! NO WONDER cranberry juice never worked before.

i went to the organic/specialty section and finally found a pure 100% juice, NOT from concentrate. i'm supposed to dilute it with water to drink it. $10, but hey, if it works, i'm totally down.

but seriously, it makes me mad that grocery items can say something on the label that it totally is not.

So what you thought was 100% cranberry juice was really just 100% juice, with cranberry flavor? Is that what you mean?

Hmm. I have never paid attention to that before.

Oh, i've been there too and it's a pain in the ass when you're dealing with a UTI. Sugar free is the only way to go. I've had uti since I was a kid and eating whole cranberries along with the juice helps a lot too. Drink lots of water, avoid bubble baths, and cotton or panty free kitty zone should help.

Hope you feel better, UTIs are the fucking worst.

    Yeah...it's very deceiving.

Always get your 100% straight juice from a health food store. Cranberry juice should NOT be sweet. It's very sour. And the only way I could take it was by putting it in a shot glass and following with water. Ick. But, it works.

Of course, if you have a current raging UTI, you most likely need some antibiotics. If it's just starting or for maintenance, then cranberry juice all the way.

Cran juice doesn't work that well. AZO is fast and effective. And you might want antibiotics too.

I eat a handful of organic dried cranberries every day. Drinking a lot of water helps too. But if you forget your gallon a day, I swear by the dried cranberries. Fresh would probably be even better.

There are some mixes that are more cranberry than others, but you have to look-they are usually also in the organic section. Emergen-C with cranberry is good, but what's really helped me is Bragg's apple cider vinegar.

They had this on the news about alot of products. How the FDA suppose to cut down on this type of thing. Because the labels will say they dont have sugar and really do! Which will cause diabetics to get sick. The best bet is to go to organic store such as whole foods(thats what it is call in chicago).

It is best to shop for food and juices at the organic food store. Your body feel so much better, and it will thank you! The more natural things is the the better it asborb into your body. I feel more engerize with organic food.

You should be mad, the labels are very tricky, juice being some of the worst. What is actually says is usually is "cranberry 100% juice." The brain reads that as "100% cranberry juice "and they know it. It is 100% juice, it's just not 100% cranberry juice and is mostly grape and or apple. Now, if the label actually said "100% cranberry juice" they would be breaking label laws, but they are tricky.

You can avoid the sugar and the cals by taking a good cranberry extract in caps, such as CranMax from the Life Extension Foundation:

    http://www.lef.org/newshop/items/item00490.html

Much higher dose of active compounds minus the sugar and cals.

Most American cranberry juice is actually loaded with high-fructose corn syrup. It's disgusting. I like to get real unsweetened cranberry juice from Trader Joe's and mix it with diet tonic water, but I'm weird like that.

BTW, cranberry juice is good for preventing UTI's, but not for curing them once they're already there.

That has always annoyed the bejeezus out of me as well, Corg.

I'm glad you found the right kind finally. And I hope you've got antibiotics to go with it!!!

    Feel better soon!!!

azo also makes cranberry pills that work just as well as drinking juice (assuming it's real juice).

Don't bother with the juice, buy the capsules. You can get cranberry capsules for about 8 bucks a bottle or so, and they work great. (I had a urologist recommend them when I was like 4 and getting chronic UTI's). It's easier to get a bottle of capsules and take 'em with water than try and find real cranberry juice most of the time.

ETA: Shit, I should read posts more thoroughly, this was already suggested like 3 times.. oops lol.

Cystex is really good too, it's specially formulated for UTI's (antibacterial)...I usually couple that with some Uristat, and flush out my bladder with a gallon of water throughout the day.

Uristat is pretty effective at stopping the pain. However, I found the antibiotic in cystex to be ineffective. Gave it a try... used it for 3 days, drank tons of water, and still had a UTI that was getting worse. Maybe my bacteriums are super-hardcore.

Right ! Even some items that say they're organic are not 100 % organic..I think as long as 70% of the ingredients are it still can be labeled organic !! Crazy isn't. I'm a label reader too. You have to be these days.

I went through this phase of ordering a "UTI Special" at bars just to see if the bartender would get me. None ever did until one time I asked for one at this lesbian bar in Norfolk, VA and the bartender just shook her head, smiled and said, "You're a fucking trip" and made me a cranberry and vodka
