That is such a nightmare! I can't believe that happened in Thornhill. I have a purebred APBT that I leave with friends that live just north of there when I go on vacation. I live in Toronto, and although Pit bulls are now banned, I didn't realize there were areas of Ontario that were allowing already existing, law abiding citizens dogs to be taken away, let alone killed. I really find this hard to believe.
Um, yeah. It is the stupidest law in the history of stupid laws. And it has already been challenged to the degree that it is likely to be. It was Bryant's baby, and he didn't even pretend that it was rational, logical or based on fact. They trotted out a bunch of anecdotal evidence and actively refused input from associations that knew anything about dogs because he knew what they were going to say (yes, seriously). If you didn't register your dog in the grace period, there is nothing you can do. (Dogs that were already in Ontario were grandfathered in). I would suggest that you keep your dog muzzled and leashed when not in your own yard (in accordance with the law for the grandfathered dogs) and hopefully nobody will notice.
I mean, it didn't occur to anyone to actually enforce existing laws regarding dangerous dogs before enacting new ones.
