    Default Prosopagnosia / Face Blindness

Its recently come to light that I have Face Blindness. I have always been crap at recognising people, but it didnt occur to me that it was a real condition until a few months ago. I just thought maybe I was being lazy and not really looking at people properly when I met them, or that it was a problem related to my eyesight. I also had read that left-handed people find it harder to remember faces than right handed people so I was fairly satisfied with that explanation since Im left-handed.

I am guessing that there will be other people on this board who will relate to this. Im also on a quest because the more people who know about Face Blindness the easier it is for all of us face blind people to explain why we appear to be so odd or rude when we walk past people we know really well on the street and dont say hello etc

Lol, maybe! On the plus side, I would recognise him by his hair I think!
(I frequently dont recognise my best friend because shes always cutting and changing the style and colours of hers!)

wow that's really interesting. you recognised me from seeing my pics on sw, is that a bit diff? or maybe it was coz you knew i would be there.

i do a similar thing where i don't wave back at people but it's coz my eye sight is terrible rather than not recognising people, i just dont see a person waving.

That confussed me too, but I just read a couple of weeks ago that the part of the brain that processes photos is different to the part of the brain that is supposed to regognise faces so that would explain why I was able to recognise you.
There is an online face blindness test of which a lot of face blind people (self included) have scored higher than expected on. The theory is that its because were looking at photos not real people so we are able to see the faces more easilly. Strange though!

Me too! I've always had problems remembering and recognizing faces, and I'm pretty sure I've hurt or weirded out people in the past because of it. I'm not sure I actually have the condition though, maybe I just need to stare at people's faces more. I've found that it helps immensely to try and take note of something else particular about the person - like their gait, voice, body shape, whatever, to make it easier for me to remember them.

It sounds like you have it, you wouldnt have to check those other things out if you could recognise faces (-:
I try to use simular methods at work too which really helps otherwise I often have no idea if Ive met a customer earlier in the night.
There are different degrees of face blindness. Some people cant recognise themselves or their families, their partners etc. Some can recognise some people either some of the time or all of the time. I fall into the later catorgory, its a wierd thing!

wow. i didn't know something like this existed....

    I'm left handed as well.

I think i have this. and i'm not the type to jump on the i have this wierd syndrome bandwagon. But i can spend all night with a guy in vip, and unless i really try to remember them, or they really stand out, I probably won't recognize him the next day.

It is easier for me to remember a female then a male.

I try to map out a person's face when it's important to remember them (ie potential regular). I sort of trace their face with my eyes, remembering anyting unique about then. sometimes it helps.

I made a serious "joke" with a regular, saying it's almost impossible for me to remember faces, but if he wears the same clothes i won't forget him..... i meant it.

it really makes this job hard at times. I can't remember big spenders, and if a guy moves seats, I might go approach him again and reintroduce myself. it's happened a lot.

I can't bring a person's face to mind, either. even someone i know really well. like, I can't picture my mother's face, or my boyfriends..... like i sort of can, but it's always just close.... sort of looks like them..... do you know what i mean?

I will recognize a person i know well, but only if i expect them, and i think it's b/c I'm looking for them. sometimes i can be in the store with rob, and i can't find him!!!! then he's 10 feet in front of me, staring at me....

    Tests for Face Blindness
When I first penned this section in early 1997, I reported there were no reliable tests for face blindness. Happily, we can now in 2006 report that has changed. The old unreliable tests are still floating around though, so a discussion of them is warranted. I will discuss the various tests now available:

    Traditional booklet tests with photographs
    Celebrity tests
    Recent tests on a computer
    Brain scans

i can't recognize celebs in movies well. i can if i know they're there, or if i recognize their voice, but a lot of times, I'll be watching the credits roll, and I'll read the name, and be like, oh! wow. I didn't recognize them, even though i know 100% who they are.....

In my case a celebrity test also revealed the reality that I perform much worse with identifying women than men - the few I got correct were all men.

wow. that's like exactly what is said before. I wonder if people can more easily match their own sex?

Out of 30 faces, you correctly identified 11.
You were familiar with 21 of the people in this test.

If we exclude the ones you were unfamiliar with, you got 52% correct.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On our previous version of this test, the average person with normal face recognition was able to recognize about 85% of the faces they were familiar with. If you missed more than half of the faces you were familiar with, this may indicate face recognition difficulties.

my celeb test results. i guess I'm pretty borderline....

Out of 72 faces, you correctly identified 38.
In other words, you got 53% correct.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On our previous version of this test, the average person with normal face recognition was able to recognize about 80% of the faces. If you correctly identified less than 65% of the faces, this may indicate face recognition difficulties

    Wow, maybe that's my problem.

I've seriously had regulars that came in and spent an hour in the CR with me twice a week for months and I would still sit down and introduce myself to them every time.

Once I hung out with a guy all day, he fixed my van, and I had sex with him... the next day he came into the club and I didn't recognise him.

Unless they have distinctive hair, I don't recognise people when they change clothes at all. There is this guy who wears a striped shirt every time he comes to the club cause he knows it'll make me recognise him.

I took that test you posted.

With the faces I got 98%
    With verbal I got 58%
    With objects I got 78%

Can this be my excuse for it being hard for me to remember names?

This is really interesting, and not only because I love online tests. I never knew that face blindness was a thing that existed... I am almost panicking on your behalf, Ms Qwerty, because I know I have a very good memory, and I still get confused just doing daily life stuff, just because I'm an easily confused person. Life would be insurmountably confusing if I couldn't remember people's faces. Wow, that is so crazy.

Anyway, I took the test, and I got 98% on faces, 88% on objects, and 92% on verbal. i think this is pretty representative of my memory... and, like I said, life still bewilders me.
Drought was over. Where was I? Drinks were on the house.
For mixers, my love, you'd poured--what?--even the rain.

Lol, I have major trouble with movies. I hardly ever watch movies or tv anyway and I guess this is why. I cant follow the plots because I cant tell the actors appart.
There are some exceptions, obviously if most of the relevant characters have something that distinguishes them, different hair colour, a beard, different racial groups or genders etc, but if they havent then then the enjoyment of watching isnt there, lol.
I think Im as bad at identifying females and males alike.

How are you with cars? For some bizarre reason faceblind people have real problems identifying different cars too. I laughed when I read this as I have problems with this too. There was a time I jumped out of my friends car to run into a shop. I ran out of the shop probably 30 seconds later and tried to jump back into the car. The door wouldnt open but I could see what i thought was my friends inside so I franticly tried to get in but couldnt. The people who were inside looked a bit startled and then i could hear my friends laughing behind me. Yep, couldnt identify the car, couldnt identify my friends!

I relate to these stories very much! I also find it hard to recognise people in different settings. For instance I can recognise the barmaids at the pub but if I should see either one of them either on their own or together somewhere else I wont have a clue who they are.

Audrey - right handed people apparently often find it harder to remember names

TOTH Its not so bad, you learn to adapt I supose. I doubt I would be orderly even if I could recognise people.
It is difficult in situations like stripping where I often find I introduce myself to people Ive already met a few times, but its not the end of the world.

I took the test and got 11% :-(

I have the same problem with movies, too. I'm always saying to whoever's watching it with me "which guy is that?" It's easier with women cause they usually have different hair, but I have a hard time telling them apart when they all have that straight, blond, lowlighted hair and skinny faces.

A week ago i tried to open the trunk of a vehicle in a parking lot. It wasn't mine. it wasen't even the same make/model. That type of ting happens all the time.

My bf is awesome at cars..... sometimes when we're driving i'll point to cars i like, and he'll tell me what they are. even though he's pointed out like, 50 of the same car, I still can't tell.

I have a very difficult time recognizing faces too! Actually remembering them is what's hardest for me. I can't picture someone's face unless I have seen them recently.
