Turkey Question-I think I ruined the Gimp!

K, those of you who know cooking....please help me! I was in charge of getting the turkey and thawing it. So, I brought home a 21lb frozen turkey, stuck it in the sink full of cold water, turned it every hour or so....THEN FELL ASLEEP! I got the turkey at 4pm, it was in the sink from 4:30 until I woke up this morning at 7!

Did I ruin it? Is it going to poison everyone and now I need to run out and get a new turkey? The water was still VERy cold and it's always really cold in my kitchen, I put it in the fridge as soon as I got up.....gawd, I suck. The poor Gimp.

Oh, we always name our turkey. I know, it's twisted, but that's what we do, and the hubby's mom said she was going to tie up it's legs and put some steel rods in it, I said "Damn, a little S&M turkey eh?" She said "Bring out the Gimp." So there ya have it, I think I killed the Gimp.

It says it takes 10-12 hours to thaw a turkey that size in cold water. You went over a bit, but you should be just fine as long as it is in the fridge now

If the water was still very cold (like, ice-water cold) AND it was completely submerged, it should be fine. I'd worry if there were any parts sticking out of the water and getting room-temperature, though.
Drought was over. Where was I? Drinks were on the house.
For mixers, my love, you'd poured--what?--even the rain.

Your fine. When I first had to thaw and cook a turkey, I knew nothing. I just put it in the sink with cold water til the next day and cooked it. No one got sick! Your safe!

If it was completely submerged, you should be fine... if it wasn't, you ARE running a bit of a risk.

Errrr. K part of it was Not submerged. When I pulled it out of the sink it still was rather hard....starting to soften up, but not really soft.

Crap. Should I run out and get a new turkey??? What do I do?

ETA: Most all of it was submerged, about an inch of it stuck out of the water....

If the sticky-out part was still kinda frozen and cold to the touch, it's fine.

I'd say you're ok. Next time order a fresh turkey and pick it up a day or two prior.

You should be fine. I don't know what the health department would say but when I was in culinary school, I saw a lot worse than that being served and everybody lived. Just make sure to cook it thoroughly. Don't sweat it. Eat the gimp.

No worries, EE. You'll be fine. Just keep it cold until it goes in the oven.

    Don't worry, you are fine.

And don't waste money on fresh birds!! The FDA maintains that poultry held at 32 degrees is still considered fresh, so everywhere is just defrosting frozen birds anyway. Some places charge twice as much just do defrost it for you.

Because there ain't no tits on the radio

    You girls rock!

I was seriously troubled by this all flippen day! I kept opening the fridge expecting the Gimp to look rancid or something, peeringat it, waiting. LOL. My son goes "Mom, did you kill the turkey?" I said it's allready dead, and he says well, is it gonna kill us?

    lil shit.

So, I'm going to cook the Gimp with full confidence that I wont be poisoning anyone this year.
