Ya kow, I chew gum like crazy to keep me from smoking lately, It doesn't work all the time, but it helps, my mouth feels clean and happy plus it gives my mouth something to do.

Then when I get an urge I really can't fight I'll have maybe half cig, then force myself to put it out and chew gum again.

Sort of like eating doritos, I'll eat a few to satisfay the craving, but not the whole bag.

I know someone will give me shit for saying this, but I haven't completely quit smoking. I smoked a pack a day when I found out I was pregnant which I've cut back to 1 or 2 a day. Sometimes I don't feel like smoking at all and don't for two or three days at a time, then I go back to it again.

I know none is best, but one cheater smoke now and again isn't going to have dire consequences on my baby. She'll be just fine.

My point is, don't feel like you're a horrible person because you haven't completely stopped. It takes time, so don't beat yourself up about it.

I wish I could tell you what would work but I'm not sure. Today was supposed to be my quit day and I have smoked 1 and 1/2 cigs and want one more right now. I guess thats not too bad. I think I am going to buy the nicorette gum. Good luck!

Kitty - at least youre being honest. And I for one wouldnt put someone down for that. Its hard and people are people. From 2 packs to 2 cigs is really good. My guy smokes which makes it harder. I told him he HAS to quit with me. Having cigarettes in the house or him smelling like them will make me want one. So now Im going to get on him about it

Bellasera - thats good! 1 cigarette from how many a day? How long has it been since you started the countdown?!!?

are you competative? if you both are, you could bet him something good (but free). like, first one to give in has to do all of the dishes for a week, or laundry or w/ev.

or something more fun. like winner gets a back/foot massage from the loser, or maybe the winner gets to pick a movie for you two to watch together.

    something like that may help.

and kitty, I think a few ciggs a week, from a pack a day, is amazing! And props to you for admitting how hard it is, but doing your best anyways.

I was smoking around a 1/2 a pack a day but started this morning. What really got me going was the dentist. I went to the dentist on Monday and he told me I need to stop smoking b/c I am showing early signs of bone in my mouth loss caused by smoking. I also need $1900 of work done.

It would be much easier I think for you if your guy stopped with you. I only see my bf fri-sun but we probably share a pack a day together. He smokes more than I do, so when we are together I smoke more Its hard by myself but it will be much harder when I am with him, and when I go to work tomorrow night!

This is seemingly sucky advice, but as it's my 3 years and 2 days quit-smoking anniversary (and I was a heavy smoker), I feel it's valid...you have to just bite the bullet and do it. Cold turkey.

Hoping that hypno or acupuncture will help is just relying on a crutch (that will ultimately probably fail you). Download studies on the damage cigarette smoke does to a developing fetus, and read them when you want a cig (I can do it for you if ou don't have academic database access, pm me).

I know this isn't what you feel you're looking for, but I think it would be wise to sit back and consider for a moment...ultimately, you can quit. If I can, you can. If anyone can, you can. If you feel you need to use something, understand that your personal commitment and the effort you put into quitting will NOT be decreased with hypno or acupuncture- it'll be just as hard until you get your brain into the non-smoking place.

FWIW, it took me roughly 4 weeks to get my non-smoking legs (ie feel comfy fighting off a craving, being around smoke). 4 weeks of suffering (cuz it will suck) is worth your baby's health, right?

ETA: if your guy smokes, he HAS to quit. WTF, if you're going to do it in conjunction with a human growing inside you, he can do it.

I quit cold turkey about a month ago and the first few days were hell but I am totally ok with it now.

So just remember that it IS hard in the beginning but so worth it.

    You women are inspirational.

    I want to quit.

    But I don't.

    But I really want to.

I'm down to maybe three cigs a day. Some days I don't smoke at all. Everyone says that since I smoke so little, I should just quit alltogether. Eh.
Audrey, one thing my Doc told me when I was preggers and I told him I was smoking (this was when I first found out I was preggers) He said to not stress about it, tht the stress ws as harmful, if not more so, to the baby as smoking. He said to cut back, every day a little, then a little more, etc. But most of all, don't beat yourself up over it, just work on it one day at a time.

    Good luck sweety.

That is awesome you want to quit for you and your baby's sake!! That is a wonderful choice.

When I found out I was pregnant I quit. I just stopped doing it. I felt shitty about smoking while pregnant and just stopped cold turkey. Hard but hey it's your baby and don't you want to give your baby the best?

My son is now 6 and I still don't smoke. I will never smoke again (unless it is for a movie role and even then they won't be real cigarettes and hell no I won't inhale).

All I am going to say is that QUITTING SMOKING HAS ITS REWARDS. I have no regrets about doing it, I have a healthy son, and feel good about setting a good example. Yes it is rewarding in the sense that you can breathe, taste food, smell better, have more money, have healthier kids and better health overall, etc. but the rewards go beyond all these. I think when you choose something as positive as staying smoke free, your life changes for the better and you wind up living a happier life overall. When you choose to do something to show love and respect to yourself and others, you open yourself up to being blessed. This has happened in my own life and it would take a long time to explain but take my word for it...being smoke free is something that you will be happy about doing.

Sorry for the ramble. But the only way to quit is to quit. Just don't do it and the urge will go away more and more.

    YAY!!!!!!

I know that you know that there are times when you have to be strong and do what is right for your child. This is one of those times.

You did it once before, you can do it again.

Be strong!! Take it one day at a time, and if you get a craving say "I choose to do right by my child" and you'll see how that craving disappears.

I totally believe in you!! You can do it!!

Something that hepled me tremendously, was the book "The Easy Method To Quit Smoking", by Alan Carr. The book was my friggin ROCK in the horrble storm of withdrawl. I took the thing everywhere. The author himself, smoked about 4 packs a day for years. He finally quit cold turke due to his degenerating health and became an inspirational speaker/author. I had tried everything (nicotine gum, chantix, you name it). The book really spoke to me. Maybe you should pick it up.

    That sounds good^^.

FYI I smoked a pack a day from the time I was 14 til the time I was 26. I was the kind of smoker who lit up before I opened my eyes in the morning.

Now I ABHOR cigarettes. I hold my breath when one is around me. I hate them. I just hate them.

So yeah. You CAN do a 180.

I started at 13 and am 25. Im the same way.

Last night I told my guy to take my smokes with him when he leaves in the morning. I told him if he needs to smoke he can but not at home and when he gets home he has to shower (so i dont smell it) and no smoking here.

    Here goes - Day 1

This seems like the best advice to me...put the baby ahead of yourself.

Sure, maybe one or two cigarettes a day might not do that much damage, but do you really want to take that chance?

Have any of you tried Chantix? It's a prescription pill.. my stepmom did it (smoker for 40ish years) and quit, cold turkey, and has been smoke-free since early August. No cravings or anything.

Look it up and see if it may work for you!

AL hang in there. I know you are under stress. Don't let the negativity get to you . Don't let it win!! Be strong. If you stay away from them long enough you won't want one anymore.
