    Random question for the Aussies...

What beer is popular in the Northern Territory? If an inexperienced American woman got lost and wandered into a topless pub in the middle of nowhere, would she be able to order Fosters or would she have to order a more authentic Aussie beer?

ETA: Oh yeah, and would this pub be likely to serve food? What food would it have? It's somewhere in the Top End; my characters got lost between Katherine and Darwin and went several miles off the Track. One of them is a vegetarian, but it suits me fine if there's nothing she can eat. Suits me fine if there is, too. I just need to know!

You know, the last time I brought up Foster's (which, of course, is Australian for "beer"), I was met with a fair degree of pissiness. So tread lightly. These are dangerous "blokes" (as they say).
"He will come in one of the pre-chosen forms. During the rectification of the Vuldrini, the traveler came as a large and moving Torg! Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor! Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!"

yeah there would be Fosters and Carlton and VB. People would also be ordering the beer by the jug as opposed to just pots.

As for food there would definitely be steak, fish and chips, lamb and ham steaks with pineapple.

I know no one drinks Foster's in Australia, that's why I'm asking! My main character is an inexperienced American and SHE wouldn't know that. She's the type that would wander into a remote outback pub and order Foster's, and think she was being authentic.

Does beer in the NT come in midis and schooners or is that a NSW thing? I didn't go out drinking very much when I lived in Queensland, and I'm not a beer person, so I can't remember how to order it there... I think it was pints and half-pints but I'm not sure. I do remember that it was different in different states.

Oh, and what's an agwa bomb?

Would a topless pub have anything for a vego kid to eat? She'll have cheese but not eggs. Right now I have her ordering a ploughman's but I'm not sure if a topless pub in the top end would have that.

    Thanks!

Would you like me to find out firsthand? I might be going in January and could do some research on the food in the boobie bars.

LOL, sure! Doesn't help with the one-month novel, but I'll still be working on the screenplay then. Are you going to the NT? Where will you be?

*sigh* I miss Australia. Writing about it is making me homesick for it.

Oh, is this for the novel? I assumed screenplay. Is it a different deal or are you using it to develop the story?

I have no fucking idea where we're going aside from some reunion shows of an obscure and beloved Aussie band, the Triffids, in Sydney. All other plans are up in the air. I am officially open for suggestions.

Same story. I was having a lot of trouble with the screenplay, so I scrapped it and started over with it for my novel for National Novel Writing Month. I'll adapt it back into a screenplay when I'm done. This approach is working much better, actually! I'm about halfway through (I need to catch up, I know) and it's going well.

I'm not Sydney's biggest fan. I love Melbourne, and my favorite place on earth is Tasmania. You can take your rental car on a ferry from Melbourne to Tasmania (the ferry is called the Spirit of Tasmania) and drive all over the world's best-kept secret. There's beautiful hiking there, and Hobart is such a terrific funky little town, and you can see tiny wild penguins at Bicheno or rent your own jacuzzi cabin in the woods at Freycinet. And you can drive across the whole island in about five hours, so you can see a decent amount of it in a week or so. Make sure you drink the Mercury Cider, it's delicious!

^^^ Are The Triffids doing reunion shows?! I saw them 20 years ago, crazy!

Yekhefa, Ploughmans Lunches sound very British, Ive never heard of them being served in pubs here. Perhaps some of the classier bars might and I could be wrong of course but I cant imagine the average Aussie pub serving something called that.
My ex travelled all over the country with his band for a lot of years and pies seem to feature heavilly in a lot of the more outback towns. He was fairly health conscious and going away on tour was hell for him meal wise if thats any help. He always complained that at best the food was never good. Often dried out and old, stuff that had been sitting waiting to be bought. Steak and chips was probably a good day.

Yeah, that sounds more like the Australia I know. Bummer. I guess my little vego girl would have to make do with chips and ketchup then. I think I just wrote in the ploughman's because I had one the other night and loved it so much I'm still thinking about it, LOL! But I never saw one in Australia either, now I think about it. Thank G-d I wasn't vego then.

Okay. You just gotta love hostels!

    http://www.backpackertravelauctions...._territory.php
    http://www.backpackertravelauctions...._australia.php
    http://www.backpackertravelauctions....blications.php

    200ml - Seven or a Seven Ounce
    285ml - Pot, a Beer or a Handle
    425ml - Schooner
    570ml - Pint
    1140ml - Jug

Pure Blondes are popular (usually only available in stubbies). VBs always available (available on tap as well as stubbies). Cooper's Sparking Ale is available in most places (available in stubbies).

Fosters is really really not drank here often enough for pub especially outback pubs to have them either on tap or behind the bar (in the fridge).

As for food: pub meals are very generic and usually cater to non vegetarians.

    Fish and chips.
Chicken Parmigiana with chips and/or salad.
    Garlic bread.
    Seafood.
    Sandwiches.
Steak or some sort of meat.

It really depends on how 'fancy' you want to the pub to be as to what they will serve.

As someone who doesn't eat chicken very often and hardly ever eats beef, lamb or pork... I pretty much order vegies and chips or potato wedges or salad when working in pubs. They don't cater that well to special diets.

For those visiting the Northern Territory, beware the gargantuan 'Darwin Stubbie', a 1.25 litre bottle of beer in the shape of a standard stubbie.

hmm, it's hard to describe the taste. i'm not sure how to describe it, it's very unique. it tastes okay.

down in adelaide, jagerbombs (a shot of jagetmeister dropped into half a glass of red bull) used to be the big thing at all the clubs. then i went up to darwin and knew a few guys working in the clubs there and agwa bombs were all the rage... they used to line like 50 of them up along the bar and everyone would drink them at once.

they FUCK YOU UP, and when drunk in high quantity, have a hallucinogenic effect . i had quite a few and was so drunk that i went back to my hotel and threw all our bread and ham off the balcony into the swimming pool, then got naked and slept in the tv cabinet.

Oh my. That turned my stomach a little bit. I once did way too many Irish car bombs and have no desire to do any kind of "bomb" ever again!

I've had vegetarian pub meals in country Victoria (bread and dips), never been to NT though.
