    Default Assholism (Assholishness? Assholeneity?)

"It's said in Hollywood that you should always forgive your enemies - because you never know when you'll have to work with them."
    - Lana Turner

I'm facing the predicament of supervising a program that requires me to work with somebody who's never had my best interest at heart. In order to accept the position, I consciously decided to forgive them and move forward in the best interest of the agency and its clients. However, it's occasionally tempting for me to exclaim, "I peep game, you smug, slimy motherfucker!"

I realize that anger has a way of giving control to the person that angers you but, damn, I'd like to be the "lesser" person for two minutes and verbally blast the manipulative, dishonest, inconsiderate wart on the ass of humanity. Ironically, I'm entrusted with modeling problem solving and conflict resolution for the staff members and clients here. OTOH, if we both worked at a strip club, I guess I would just ignore this waste of DNA (damn, shoulda been born a hot female)...

So, I've pacified myself with Lana Turner's^^^ quote and the knowledge that assholism (assholishness? assholeneity?) is not an affront to be taken personally. No, certain people just ARE...

"Some things gnaw a man worse than dying" - Kevin Costners character in "Open Range".

The idea that "anger has a way of giving control to the person that angers you" only applies when you don't give yourself the joy of doing what needs to be done.......in your case maybe model your conflict resolution based on solving your problem with said asshole......terminate the fuck....problem solved.

    Let the anger empower you...

Be professional, personable, and keep them close to you.

    Let their personality emphasize yours.

You become the shining example to their heart of darkness.

They really are doing you an incredible favor, allowing the best parts of you to shine like they have never been able to before.

Maintain poise dignity and integrity. They will show themselves as they truly are.

    1. I vote for "Assholery", and declare that it encompasses a continuing practice.

    2. Why get mad, can it change anything? Treat it the same as if you were working with someone with brain damage or Alzheimers. You may want to document everything in the progress of the project, in case an incident arises and you need to put it all back together.

Be careful what you ask for...

P.S. Could you clear 2-4% of your PM box for incoming?

P.P.S. Should I have used the "(Warning: Rant!)" header as a courtesy?

Hah, trust me, asshole-ish strippers are whipped up to their worst in the stripclub & find it difficult not not act on impulses. It's an environment that encourages backstabbing and low-down-dirty-deeds....IMO the hottest girl ends up winning, whether she's right or not.

Patience, grasshopper. Act like nothing happened until you have a shot at dicking him over. I'm sure there's some Ferengi directive from "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" regarding this....Or Machiavelli, take UR pick.

While I do believe in forgiveness. I do not believe that you should expect this person's behavior to be any different than before. So prepare yourself for that mentally. If this person is a bully at this workplace then you may find that there is a group of people there who are just waiting to pounce on him. I read this book recently called "The No Asshole Rule" I bought it from amazon. I think you would find it very interesting. But definantly do finish this person off if they at all have the still burning need to get in the way of your working goals. Like my best friend says, "Be the [email protected]#@ or be somebody's [email protected]#$."

I don't know. I think anger has value, else it wouldn't have evolved and thrived in the gene pool. Should you let it consume you? No. Should you use it as a tool to prevent further abuse to yourself? Yes.

I'm sidetracking here, but when I need to clean out PMs I save them all to my computer before deleting. That way you can go back and relive the good times.

Actually, Budai, the writings of Sun Tsu would probably be more applicable to your situation !

Bullies are easy by comparison, SMBA. This character's actually a deceitful, buck-passing, underqualified and politically connected slacker. I'll order "TNAR" from amazon.com this week. Isn't that the book with several "Are You An Asshole?" quizzes?

I'm going to steal my wife's copy, which she had to read for an MBA class some years ago. I hope she hasn't pulled any shit from that book on me!

BTW, Melonie, after reading your informative posts in different forums for 6 months, I've found a quote that fits you well:

    "Wisdom outweighs any wealth."
