Default does my lap top have a virus?

My virus subscription ran out about 2 weeks ago and I have not renewed the subscription yet.

Now I keep getting these windows alerts saying that windows needs to restart to install new updates (I have not installed any updates) and will restart in 4 seconds. I just keep clicking on 4 hours (you can change when it will restart).

This is pissing me off. Does it sound like a virus?

Anti-virus updates and windows updates are different things.

If your computer is prompting you to do a Windows update, you should do it.

You won't be able to do anti-virus updates till you renew your subscription.

I have Norton ant-virus and I'm not going to renew it when it expires. It slows the computer down and there are free alternatives available like AVG ant-virus.

You should be able till do a virus scan but it won't include any recent virus updates.

I would uninstall your current pay ant-virus and go with the AVG.

Also make sure your Windows updates are done.

Here's the link to the free AVG anti-virus protection:

You didn't say which version of Windows you are using. Windows XP downloads many updates automatically, and you either restart then, or they install when you restart. Watch after you choose "Shut down" from the Start menu, and you will see the "Install updates and shut down" option instead of "Shut down." Other updates only download when you choose to do so.

You should not be surfing the web unprotected. It's very much like having casual sex without a condom. You can't go hardly anywhere without picking up adware and malware. Viruses are not as common as you might think, but if you go to porn sites, usenets, or use peer-to-peer sharing software like Limewire, you are at great risk.

You can get a pretty good protection suite for free from AOL, according to Consumer Reports, and you can get a free membership from AOL if you don't use their dialup system. Even if you use it for nothing else, the protection software is worth it.

Before you install new virus/adware/etc. software, be sure to UNinstall your old, expired protection software, especially if it is Norton. The two sotwares will conflict with one another and neither will work correctly.

    Good luck!

What you're describing is the restart required for Windows Updates (sounds like a Vista prompt), and you should restart at some point so those updates can install.

As for your anti-virus software, Avast is free and very good.

Uninstall your old anti-virus product before installing Avast.
