Default what is going on? (weird digestive problems)

I know none of you are doctors or psychic oracles , but does anyone have any idea what might be going on with me? Maybe you've had the same symptoms and found out what was causing it?

Basically every time I eat, I feel like piss. I get ridiculously grotesquely (and painfully!) bloated, even if I've only eaten a single piece of toast or something similarly small. And (TMI, sorry) then I alternate between being constipated and having the runs. Then there are the lovely excruciating pains that shoot around in my intestines/lower stomach and don't go away until the next morning.

It seems like that's only triggered by certain foods though. I never notice problems when I eat certain foods by themselves: vegetables, fruit, nuts, tofu, cheese or eggs. (So that would rule out diverticulitis, b/c vegetables with seeds don't do anything to me.) What else could it be? This has been going on for awhile (i.e. years), but seems to be getting worse lately.

Do you know off the top of your head specific foods that bother you?

It could be a number of things. IBS. Crohn's. Food sensitivities. Celiac Disease if only manifested by wheats/starches/processed sugars/complex carbs.

Have you been dealing with weight loss now or at any point in the past that seemed unwarrented? Any odd rashes, itches, runny nose, asthma, anemia/jaundice?

Clean out your diet and start taking good probiotics.

Or just get pregnant. It cured me.

No, seriously. I have ulcers in my colon that messed me up so bad I couldn't even drink a glass of water sometimes without getting violently ill. They ran in cycles it seemed and I could usually chart on the calendar when I was going to have a really bad week, food-wise. But....since I got pregnant I've had an iron stomach. I don't know if the ulcers have gone dormant or stopped forming or what but I can eat absolutely anything in any combination and it doesn't make me sick AT ALL.

Okay, its not a practical suggestion at all, but I wanted to squeal publicly about it because I've been so happy to be able to live like a normal person for the first time in my life. I just hope the effects stick around. I love being able to go out for dinner AND go to a movie afterwards without panicking that I'll get sick.

A practical suggestion would be what my mom, who suffers from the same problem, does. She has two cups of probiotic yogurt every day and she swears that it's made a huge difference. Then again, the pregnancy thing cured her too and it's only JUST starting to bother her again after 19 years. We're all hoping I'll be as lucky.

yes...pretty much everything you mentioned below. But foods that aren't starchy never give me problems...unless I pair them with things that ARE starchy. Like a piece of cheese won't make me feel ill, but a cheese sandwich will. The only starchy thing that seems to never bother me is rice....weird.

Celiac Disease if only manifested by wheats/starches/processed sugars/complex carbs.
So how do you know if you have this? Do you get a blood test or what?

Celiac's Disease is a pretty rare allergy to gluten (carb) products. There are also gluten intolerances, which are less severe and much more common.

Because you said rice doesn't bother you makes me think it's definitely some form of gluten intolerance. Most people with a gluten intolerance of some kind don't have ANY problems with a sprouted grain such as rice, (particularly organic, non-bleached rice such as brown rice, coral rice, black rice, wild longgrain, etc), or tofu.

Getting a blood test you'll have to fight for, I do know that much. I know that if you eliminate the gluten products from your diet and the problems go away, you'll have a much higher chance of getting the bloodwork done.

If you need any help with a gluten-free diet, let me know. I have a ton of sites with gluten-free recipes and how to make substitutions so you can still eat your favorite foods!

Actually, it sounds like you have a poor digestive system. And, it's probably caused by not eating enough fiber/whole/organic foods...and aggravated by eating foods that are hard to digest (most of the foods you described as giving you problems).

I would strongly advise utilizing a colon cleanse (like Dr. Natura) to get your bowels moving properly and then changing up your diet. Eating more veggies (fruits are ok, but veggies have MORE vitamins, minerals, and fiber) and cutting back on the starches, etc.

I used to have this same problem...and let me tell you. I do one Dr. Natura a year and make sure I have a clean diet...and I've had no issues since.

VG...that's the thing that makes me wonder--I don't eat many processed foods or simple sugars at all, and generally eat healthy; plenty of fiber, vegetables, etc. If I was eating crap and feeling ill I'd probably just think "well duh" and cut out the junk food. But even "good" stuff like whole-grain bread makes me feel like ass.

redifer: I will try the gluten-free thing and see if it helps. I googled celiac disease and gluten intolerance after you mentioned it, and the symptoms fit. I guess if I cant get a test for it, I could cut gluten products out of my diet and see if I feel better.

Yeah, that sounds like IBS. I tried everything, and it wasn't diet related for me. It was a stress response. Spastic colon in other words. Probiotics and limiting bad foods help, but sometimes it'll keep going.

    You can check out www.helpforibs.com

It explains a lot about the syndrome, and details all the myths. Although my friend cured her symptoms by a naturopath that cleaned up her eating, found her food intolerances, and put her on probiotics, absolutely nothing helped me except Wellbutrin. And before it was banned, Zelnorm. Apparently depression can mess with digestion too.

I would still try the probiotics and the fiber therapy first. You could also have an overabundance of candida (which is caused by eating too much sugar/starch). An overgrowth of candida will actually prevent your body from properly digesting foods and some of the symptoms are bloating, changes between constipation and diarrhea, cravings for sugary/starchy foods. It can also be caused by taking antibiotics and never really getting the probiotics...so the flora never gets rebalanced...and you get to where you are now.

I would strongly advise working at it from this angle first. If the fiber therapy and probiotics do not work, then move on to the other options. I have found, though, that many people have found that fiber therapy and probiotics works wonders. You can have your candida level checked at a local homeopathic doctor, naturapath, chiropractor or even some reflexologist can check it.

A homeopathic doctor or naturapath can also help you find the foods that you are allergic to and help you get them out of your diet.

Hope you find the solution, soon!

Whole grains aren't good for everyone on the planet. Some people have sensitivites to them, especially wheat.

IME lots of people with IBS do well with eliminating some or all grains. You may want to look into that.
