Want to send out steaks to my parents in Hawaii for Christmas... any recs on who to use?
I know someone that orders from Omaha steaks and says they are wonderful.

Omaha Steaks definitely. Get the petite filets wrapped in bacon. YUM.
How does it not go rotten before they get it?

omaha's the standard but how about a gift certificate to a steak place instead? (e.g. ruth's chris steakhouse)
it's a little more but much fresher and imo better experience.
Agreed. It gets that grainy, freezer-burned taste, like Kosher meat. That said, I think freezing a steak changes its texture somewhat. On balance, I'd rather eat a cut that hasn't been frozen.
Then again, how much fresh red meat can you get in Hawaii? I've had Omaha meat before; it's good for frozen meat.
Idealism is fine, but as it approaches reality, the costs become prohibitive.

I like this idea better for sending a cheesecake or something that doesn't require work. If you screw up a nice steak, that would be such a waste.

What the hell? You can order steak in the mail?
Well, I'll be damned. I'm going to have to take a gander at that site.

Believe me, I would rather send them a GC... once you include the additional shipping fees to send shit out to Hawaii, buying them dinner at Capital Grille or Ruth's would be less expensive!
Mom and her hubby like to grill a lot and when I brought up "mainland steaks" with her, she went ape shit.
Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. Omaha Steaks it is!

Don't do it! there's better!
Speaking from my personal experience (and eatin') I'd strongly recommend Niman Ranch. They are excellent. In addition to shipping, they sell in good grocery stores and have just delicious beef and pork.
I send gifts of bacon frequently from Nueske's, and order their Canadian bacon in bulk.
And as long as we are talking about food gifts, Jacques Torres is freaking great for chocolate -- they have a lot of interesting chocolate covered items. I'm super super sad they don't have the dark chocolate covered peanut butter filled pretzels right now, though.
I've ordered from the above companies and always been happy (and had happy recipients)! Giving food rather than trinkets or stuff is my favorite way to give.

A lot. My mom eats organic and there is a farm in Hawaii that is all organic beef. it was yummy and the same price as other beef sold in the supermarket. My mom found out about them at an Organic Food thingy that was at some park every week.... sorry - that was probably absolutely no help...

I've never hada problem with Omaha. Fuckin YUM!

I'm sure they would both be delicious. I'm a fan of the dry-aged steaks; that's what you'd get at a great steakhouse.
I also push NR because Omaha is just a packaging and shipping business whereas Niman Ranch is like a collective of smaller farms. I don't like buying factory farmed meat and buy grassfed and free range meats. Grassfed beef is also a lot tastier and healthier for you!

The Big Island is home to one of the country's oldest and largest cattle ranch; Parker ranch.
Ok, I googled for more specifics: 30-35,000 head on 150,000 acres, founded in 1847, origin of the paniolo (Hawaiin Cowboys). The website says it produces USDA choice beef, doesn't mention anything about prime.
So if you want prime grade, you should probably mail order.
A check of chowhound.com provides a consensus of negative views for Omaha Steaks. Some reccomendations from there:

This is a grass-fed ranch in Idaho. the rest are steakhouse/butchershop places.

My wife has ordered Omaha steaks several times for friends and family, to everyone's delight. I've not tried any others. Happy Holidays.
Hey Mia,
Dry Aged is done to create a sort of gamey taste. It's done on Porterhouse and T-bones typically. When I order a side of beef I get the whole thing dry aged and even the hamburger tastes like steak.
I've had Omaha Steaks when I lived in Florida. The filets are O.K. but don't buy any bundles with hamburger. The hamburger is too lean and it is tasteless.
I would order 4 of the Porterhouse steaks. The inside is actually the fillet, the outside is the N.Y. Strip. Cut out the fillet and wrap it in bacon. Grill them and you have a great meal for 2. Dad gets the Bone-in Strip and mom gets the fillet... at least in my house.
