Default Dental Work when youre Pregnant?

I had an appointment Nov 30th to pull 4 teeth. I went in and told them Im pregnant so I cant have the teeth pulled because of swallowing all that blood and gross stuff for a couple days.

The assistant called me and said I can have it done in my 2nd trimester. I thought you werent supposed to get dental work done AT ALL when youre preggo. Swallowing all that blood and taking the pain killers cant be good for baby. Not to mention I was supposed to take a sedative - can you take sedatives when preggo?! I dont want to take one preggo but I dont want to NOT take one at all.

Should I follow DRs instructions and go ahead with the dental work in Jan or just wait it out until babys born? Then again Im going to nurse so Id have all that stuff in me going to baby anyway... argh...

Under a local it's perfectly safe.

Swallowing blood. Yea, but that is why you have gauze to bite on and clot the cavity that is left behind. many vomit from swallowing blood after teeth extractions. Some don't. Many Dentists still will pull.

Actually, I;ve read it is not only recommended, but inportant to get your dental work done during pregnancy...hang on...

Preventive dental cleanings and annual exams during pregnancy are not only safe, but are recommended. The rise in hormone levels during pregnancy causes the gums to swell, bleed, and trap food causing increased irritation to your gums. Preventive dental work is essential to avoid oral infections such as gum disease, which has been linked to preterm birth.

Dental work such as cavity fillings and crowns should be treated to reduce the chance of infection. If dental work is done during pregnancy, the second trimester is ideal. Once you reach the third trimester, it may be very difficult to lie on your back for an extended period of time.

Well when you take sedatives your baby is too. Many wont prescribe them when pregnant. In that case i would wait it ot if you can. Or try for Tylenol.

And another....Rise in Hormones can cause a woman to develop "Dry Socket" which is very very painful, and requires treatment a few times or more to heal up the site....It's a give or take perhaps.

I would say it would depend on the severity of the situation to have the extractions done. If it is just because of crowding...wait until after baby...if you plan to breastfeed, definitely pump a lot to hold baby over until the meds are out of your system.

If it is due to massive cavities and a chance of infection, I would say get it done. Dry socket is the WORST, but if they know that the chances of this happening are higher during pregnancy, then have them schedule you for first thing on a Monday...that way, if you get dry socket (usually happens in the first 3 days) you will be able to run in and have it packed. When I got dry socket, all they did was pack some nasty ass stuff in the socket. I had to leave it for 3 days and then they took it out and it was done. It's only painful if you leave it (like I had to...my dry socket happened on a Saturday night and I couldn't get in until Monday...owwie!). I didn't use any of my meds until I got dry socket...then I sucked them all down. Definitely not fun, but didn't need any meds after the socket was packed.

    Good luck!

its cavities and infection... they really need to be pulled. I actually need 2 sets of having 4 teeth removed then need crowns put on about 3-4 weeks apart. Theyre bad from past root canals and insurance didnt cover the crown so theyve rotted. They must be removed. Im really worried about the sedative.

Well, I guess the good thing is Ill have insurance by then

^ Talk with your dentist about alternatives. If they are infected, that is bad and you do NOT want an infection in your mouth.

Take what your dentist tells you and talk it over with your doctor and see if you cannot come up with a good solution to protect baby, protect yourself, and have all of this needed work done.

Also, a good person to ask questions of is the pharmacist. They have much more knowledge of drugs, interactions, and safety than the dentist and the doctor combined. Utilize ALL of their knowledge.

    Good luck!

Right. I so agree. Also antibiotics are fine to take while pregnant. You don't want this infection hurting you both. I would (just a suggestion) get them out now. And take the antibiotics and try tylenol to get me through.

But that is me. OUCH, nothing worse than infected teeth.

Hope you feel better very soon. It can be done safely. Having them out pulls alot of infection with them...it's gotta be better then keeping them and having an infection full term with baby on board.

You can do this with a local. No need to be sedated. Even so, one Valium right before the extractions will not make your baby addicted.

Yea - now I have to wait until mid January... that just sucks. Ive been taking Tylenol for the occasional pain but nothing can be done until I reach the 2nd trimester which is forever away....

Oh well.... gotta deal with it I guess....

Thanks for mentioning the pharmacist. I didnt even think of that!
