Default I'm supposed to collect opinions on this criminology topic.

The topic is " When are criminal profiles appropriate for law enforcement?"

Now, I want to point out that criminal profiling is not the same as racial profiling. Criminal profiling is used to establish a group of suspects using evidence from crime scenes. It develops a theory of what kind of person the criminal might be, wheat their backgrounds may be like and what their motives might have been. Also, the more crimes they commit the more clues into their personalities we can find. It also helps investigators to determine who is not a suspect.

Now, again the question is "When are criminal profiles appropriate for law enforcement?" I added it again because it's a really weird topic and has been difficult fo rme to stick to without dwelling into other totally off topic areas. It was assigned to me, otherwise I'd have chosen a less difficult topic.

So, I'm allowed to use quotes from people so I may just make up names for you all, but I may have to add a link to this wbsite in my works sited. Thanks

I'm not sure your teacher may take strippers seriously. Let me stop smoking crack with my customer for a minute for me to reply - jk. Though you may be kidding about linking the quote to this website.

I think they are appropriate when ever it is available to help determine what suspects to look into and who to rule out. Especially when there is a wide range of people who would fit the crime. Such as, finding a tire track on the body. Anyone with that kind of tire could be a suspect. So it would be kind of necessary to use a criminal profiler to narrow down the suspect range.

Actually I was serious about tit. I don't want to get into any kind of trouble with plagerizing accusations and whatnot. I'm hoping she'll just glance at the works sited, which I bet she probably wont even do that, she'll just make sure it's connected. Also, she seems pretty openminded if that makes a difference.

Well the most controversial of course is when it results in a huge group of people, such as all hispanic men from 18-35. I think a while back there was a case when they dna tested every guy in a small town to find the rapist. Eh, perhaps something is wrong with me but if they had to test every guy in town or frisk every young hispanic guy in a 10 mile radius they found I wouldn't complain.

Wow thats costly. They could have done better than 18-35 Hispanic males. Still, having to do that has to be some violation of rights. Don't they have to have real probable cause other than fitting a simple description?

^^^ in the 80's there was a case in Atlanta where young black boys kept getting murdered. The investigators suspected the killer wasn't white because it was a predominantly black community and no one had seen anyone suspicious, whereas a white man would have stood out like a sore thumb. Now, the man that they believe was the killer was only found to be standing over a bridge where one body was found, and they didn't have much else to link him to it. He's been in prison ever since and still maintains his innocence. He is apparently the only black serial killer on record.

You should check into the work of John Douglas. He's a retired FBI profiler and, though he seems arrogant, a pretty good author. He wrote a few very interesting books about criminal profiling by police and FBI.

Also, some people believe that the statements given by profilers are too broad to really mean anything.

    EX:
They had been at it for almost six hours. The best minds in the F.B.I. had given the Wichita detectives a blueprint for their investigation. Look for an American male with a possible connection to the military. His I.Q. will be above 105. He will like to masturbate, and will be aloof and selfish in bed. He will drive a decent car. He will be a "now" person. He won't be comfortable with women. But he may have women friends. He will be a lone wolf. But he will be able to function in social settings. He won't be unmemorable. But he will be unknowable. He will be either never married, divorced, or married, and if he was or is married his wife will be younger or older. He may or may not live in a rental, and might be lower class, upper lower class, lower middle class or middle class. And he will be crazy like a fox, as opposed to being mental. If you're keeping score, that's a Jacques Statement, two Barnum Statements, four Rainbow Ruses, a Good Chance Guess, two predictions that aren't really predictions because they could never be verified -- and nothing even close to the salient fact that BTK was a pillar of his community, the president of his church and the married father of two.http://www.schneier.com/blog/archive...am_of_cri.html

Criminal profiles are only appropriate when you actually have the raw statistics next to them to show why they relate. Even then, if you a lead to a suspect, it is inappropriate to use the profile as proof of having committed the crime. At best, it should act as the basis for a search warrant.

The Atlanta child murderer is the one I was talking about. Henry Louis Wallace and Carlton Gary I've never heard of. That's funny, our teacher had us under the assumption that he was the only one. I'll deffinitely check thos out. Thanks.

As far as I am concerned criminal profiling is acceptable for violent crimes. As long as it is NOT based on eyewitness accounts because eyewitnesses are notoriously inaccurate.
