Default how's this for convoluted environmental logic ?

From the story it would appear that some California environmentalists are now calling for a ban on wood burning fireplaces / stoves / furnaces, based on their emission of large amounts of CO2 and particulate matter.

Of course these are the very same California environmentalists who are arguably responsible for the burning of hundreds of thousands of acres of California forests every year due to their legally effective environmental objections to logging / commercial forest management, and also their legally effective objections to the thinning of undergrowth by adjacent private property owners.

So if I understand this right, it's not OK to burn wood if humans will derive a benefit from it, but it IS OK to burn 10 times as much wood as long as it causes death and destruction instead ?

Also, now that the US Supreme Court has ruled that CO2 is an 'air pollutant' such that the EPA can regulate it, several states have petitioned the EPA to set emission standards for wood burning appliances so that new state laws can then be written to shut them down.

Can I just take all of these raving environmentalists and drop them off on an island in the pacific Nor'west. Just hand tools. I want to see the shining utopia they would create. Really.

naah, just send them the bill for the 'damages' that their policies are causing - another 14,000 people evacuated yesteday in California and another 75 homes damaged ... on top of the 2000 homes destroyed last month.

Yet California environmental laws still prevent homeowners from clearing trees and underbrush back from their houses !!!

(snip)"years ago some tree huggers found this interesting little rat living in those fire trails that had been the stopping point for many a forest fire that raged throughout time. So man, being somewhat dense at times, decided the Kangaroo Rat was to be saved and the way to do it was not keeping the fire trails in these giant timbers clean and open to prevent the jumping of small forest fires into more forest areas and therefore making bigger fires that are harder to control.

Then we also used to allow locals to gather the dead firewood for their own use and that helped keep the forest floor clear of more forest fire fuel. But the environmentalists decided that the trees should stay where they fall and removing them was against the natural order of things, so again the infinite wisdom of man prevailed and the floor of the forest was allowed to go uncleared.

Those two things - the lack of removal of dead underbrush and the lack of upkeep on the fire trails - added to the forest fire ability in going from many small fires to many super huge fires."(snip)

Of course as long as the Environmentalists escape all consequences of their policies, and especially when the environmentalists and their 'victims' can get laws passed that cause taxpayers 2000 miles away who don't support their policies to pick up a good portion of their 'tab', why should they do anything differently !

(snip)"But let us put in another added piece of interest. Because of the great individual wealth of Americans it was decided that living next to nature was great and having bears and deer in your backyard as you ate breakfast was a utopia that could be afforded. So people built their homes right next to nature and the forest. Not so bad, but it just so happens these people want fire protection, so where there were no homes and no worry about forest fires destroying one's property, now that is not the case. So we spend billions of dollars and risk firefighters' lives to keep these natural forest fires that clean the forest as intended from spreading and burning our house down. Nothing is ever said that these homes should never have been built in or alongside major forests anyway. Nope, we are a country of wealth and the government will protect us if we live in a fire area. So the environmentalists win again and the government even helps with the rebuilding of the home that burned down with a low interest loan paid by my taxes. Never mind that the home should have never been there.

So a wealthy country allows people to build homes in areas where there should be no home and expects me in Iowa to pay my taxes so they can live in these areas with fire protection and low interest loans provided by the government to rebuild if lost by fire. Every year many well trained firefighters lose their lives fighting a forest fire that should have been allowed to burn itself out as nature intended and we are too nearsighted to understand this."(snip)
