Default I wanna be ripped! Help!

Ok, for all the girls who know about building muscle...

I want to be buff. Like, 6 pack, lean arms, legs like Chun Li from streetfighter buff.

I'm currently 5'7, 130 pounds (I've gained 20 pounds in one year, bad diet, anti-depressants, and drinking). I want to look as thin as I was at 110, but for it to be LEAN muscle and not just skinny-flab. I want to be strong.

    My problem areas:
No upper body strength. I can't even do a pull up.
A little bit of flab on my tummy, but there's solid muscle underneath.
Cellulite on the back of my thighs, and my thighs have thickened up.

I am doing low weight-high rep strength training, working on getting down to about 120 pounds (losing the flab on my stomach and thighs) and getting in better cardiovascular shape (I can't run a mile!) before I start trying to build any large amount of muscle.

What should I absolutely cut out of my diet? Do I need supplements? Lose weight then build muscles, or build muscles then lose weight? How often do I work each muscle group? Any advice is appreciated.

    Thanks! -VS

My friend is doing a "boot camp" thing that is getting her in great shape. It's one of those crazy, intense, semi-personal training things. Would you be interested in working with a trainer like that? That's what I want to do.

Oh man, you're asking for a lot of info with this one. It's going to take a lot of dedication, and body building to the degree of which you're talking is a lifestyle, not a hobby. When it comes to diets, I don't agree with any diet that cuts out completely, or significantly limits any food groups (except refined sugars and starches like candy and white bread). I had a softball teammate who went on Atkins and wound up looking and feeling like shit. She was an athlete who was cutting out her fuel source (carbs). As a body builder, you need carbs, fats, and proteins. There are supplements you can take to help you out. Protein, glutamine, creatine, arginine, leucine, nitric oxide, the list goes on. You need to think about your goals, and then consult a source and gain information. BodyBuilding.com is a great source for knowledge. They not only have countless articles, they have a store that has great prices on products with ingredient listings and reviews. Just remember, the products aren't FDA regulated which means what's in the bottle doesn't have to be on the label, and different batches can include all of, some, none, or varying amounts of what's on the label. I suggest going to that site and doing your research on what it is specifically that you want. It's a great site that has and is still helping and motivating me to get where I am.

Thinking about that other thread - a good starting point is Body for Life. Combine the info and training from that with some of the info from bodybuilding.com. Be forewarned, Body for Life is backed by EAS (it's all really the same company) so they make it sound like you have to buy their products. You really only have to use their overpriced products if you're entering their physique transformation contest. Their products won't hurt, but I feel they're mostly a waste of $$$$.

On another note, it is def a lifestyle. Plus it's narcisistically fun and empowering!

Low-weight, high rep training is ineffective in building the muscle mass you are desiring. You need high weight, low rep.

To truly, effectively lose fat and gain muscle, you need to incorporate high weight, low rep routine (following the Body-for-Life method is actually really good) and doing cardio.

The low weight high rep and cardio is just not as effective. There is no such thing as "losing weight before adding muscle". Really, there isn't. You will lose weight most effectively by watching your carb intake, losing the bad fats (and maintaining the good fat), and upping your protein intake to help muscle repair (because your high weight routine will need that protein).

I would strongly recommend that you check out Body-for-Life...and if you need help with your food/eating choices, check out the Eating-for-Life book, as well.

You need a lot of help. As did I. Invest in a personal trainer. You will be glad you did. Here's my tip: get a female trainer.

Yes, wonderful source especially for female bodybuilding and nutrition to get there.

Not go off topic but I'm just curious why a female personal trainer? I have no idea why it would matter. I've only had one and it was a dude.

Probably because their bodies are more similar to ours being female and all?

And just from watching the male trainers at every gym I've gone to, too many of them have put me off with seeming attitude problems, and I've hardly even talked to them.

Well, I've trained with a few for a max of 5 times and %100 had attitude problems. Not to mention they're always looking around and around the gym and bored when they should be looking more 1 on 1 than that.

High weight, low rep workout. That low weight, high rep thing is a waste of time IMO. I posted my workout a few weeks ago and it sure does work for me. I'm not a bodybuilder but I've got good muscle tone and low bodyfat so I look pretty buff. I'm not in as good shape as I could be at this point because I had to take off so much time after surgery. But I am in fucking good shape - way better than I ever was in my teens or 20s and I always had a good body...

Watch the diet. Cut out white sugar, rice and bread. Eat whole grains and low sugar. Honey is good but I don't go crazy on it. High protein. Low fat, or at least low bad fat. You'll need to spend some time and/or money learning which foods are good and which are not. All processed foods are bad - those lowfat/no-fat dinners and such are bad. Get used to reading and interpreting food labels. Supplements will help and there are many choices, and there's no one formula that works for everyone. Different things will work better for different people. All you can do there is research, try what you think seems best for you and go from there.

100% agreed it requires a lifestyle change. You can't drink alot, and you will have to get totally into the mindset of being healthy. You'll have to discipline yourself to get into a workout routine, make most of your own food, take care when you travel and eat out to maintain, etc. This requires getting it so far in your head that it becomes natural and not something you force yourself to do. You will have to force yourself for a while though, to get yourself used to the routines.

Good luck. It's not easy but so worth it.

BFL is not a bad starting point. As I said, I know the author and wrote for both his mag and chapters in other books of his. To be honest, he simply takes the lessons learned from bbing, and waters in down for the general public. Nothing wrong with that and it's better than most of the fad diet books/programs out there such as Atkins, Zone, Eat Right 4 Your Type, South Beach, Slim Fast, Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, Eat More/Weigh Less (Ornish), Optifast, etc.

Now, if people want something far better (spam alert!), my ebook covers supplements, training, and nutrition at a depth BFL - or any other book - gets even close to, not to mention the forums, tools, etc. Here's a review About.com recently did on my ebook:

I only recommend a female personal trainer because I have a fear that a male trainer might hit on me to the point of discomfort, or the opposite. I might try to jump HIM! That being said, I had a male trainer who was very professional. I still flirted with him like crazy. Can't help it, stripper is in the blood, lol!! But everyone is different.

Good point Will. My trainer is very cute, but she isn't down like that. Its a bit different with females, take a special connection for me to want to get down with one.

I agree with investing in a trainer. It doesn't have to be some huge $ investment, I purchased an 8 session package (we do 2 sessions a week). One of my goals is to be able to do a pull-up by the end so we'll see. Already after two weeks my strength has increased considerably but I was a real pansy ass weakling to begin with. Do it, you'll love it!

When you get a personal trainer (male/female) make sure they train you towards your goals not theirs. For Chun Li legs, squats, squats, and more squats, get on the leg press machine. Start low ( your standard of low) work your way up. I am up too 200lb leg presses. You may have same results as me, maybe not. Try it out. In about a month you will start to notice a difference. For upper arms you might want to start with push ups ( girly ones are ok ^_^). The pull up machine at the gym is great. You can set the weights on it so you are not pulling your entire body weight.

I know I'm a month late but I unexpectedly found that GABA helps me after workouts because it makes me sleep well. My mood is mellow instead of anxious so all of the stuff the body does as I sleep is enhanced.
