A few years ago, when I hit the gym all the time and played sports I ate all the time. And I ate whatever I wanted and how much I wanted, and then I hit the treadmill and it never showed up on my body, I was in fantastic shape. These days, I've fallen out of shape, so I can't eat like that, but once all this work I'm doing at the gym kicks in and I look great again, I'm gonna eat like that again because once you're already in that condition, it's good motivation to burn off what you've eaten, ya know? Or it is for me anyways.
Anyways, honestly, if you work out enough, it shouldn't matter what you eat. NOT that it's healthy concerning things like your cholesterol, etc, but as far as physical form, just work it out!
You don't need to diet but you still need to watch what you eat and eat things that are good for you.
There was one time in college where (my major was an athletic degree) I was working out 4 hours a day in school, doing cardio and weight training 3x a week in the gym.... so I was in excellent shape....and eating whatever...then, I went on a pretty hardcore diet where I was eating two large protien bars, a protien and vegetable based lunch, and ditto for dinner...within like two to three weeks of doing that WITH all the excercise, my muscles were ripped, literally! Also, I went from a size 2 to a size 0 and I didn't loose any weight on the scale, so I must have been gaining muscle/loosing fat.
So, even though I was skinny when I was eating whatever, changing it up made a big difference

Unfortunately, yes. It may not be as significant when you are young, but this 30 year old gut says otherwise!![]()

From my experience eating right is as important if not more than working out. Why work so hard and eat whatever, you will just cancel out the results. I used to justify my bad eating by working out, but when I started eating healthier as well I got amazing results.
Yup, depends on age, genetics, what you do chose to eat and when, type of and intensity of exercise, etc, etc. As I said, many variables to that "yes" answer. When I was in my 20s, I ate more or less what ever I wanted, carried a lot if muscle (see below) and never got above 8% bodyfat. But I had a fast metabolism, exercised a lot and with great intensity, etc. Now in my early 40s, I do have to watch what I eat, do a bit more aerobics than I used to need to do, and dont carry as much muscle, which means a lower metabolism. I still get to eat more or less what I want, but it's still mostly 5-6 meals of quality food, with a "cheat" or fun food I want prehaps once a week..

As long as I eat clean 95% of the time, I can get away with a lot.
When I was 18 or 19, I'd eat like a pint of Haagendaaz a day while still eating "clean" and training hard. I was ripped.
Now I'm 31. I don't eat dairy now, so no more Haagendaaz. But I can still get away with quite a bit!![]()
As long as I'm eating enough for fuel and repair, I'm good. I love dessert. But my desserts are gluten and dairy free or a *livefoods* delicacy. I don't eat them everyday but I definitely have more than one cheat day a week. DEFINITELY.
My lifestyle is heavily active so I can take it.For me, I don't think it's genetics. My parents are overweight with health issues.

Well, you can lose weight eating whatever you want as long as you have sane portions. I've gotten down to some of my lower weights by eating primarily pizza. However, you'll be thin if you watch the portion sizes, but you won't look your best. Like, you know that unhealthy look skinny people can have? Yeah.
Diets don't matter when you're working out, they matter for your entire life. You get out what you put in. Shit in = crappy feeling body. Good stuff in = healthier feeling body. That's my experience. When I eat really bad food (greasy food, super sweet) I can tell a difference. The type of diet you're on matters when you're training.

^^^ That's true. Plus, when you're working out you WANT to eat better. You really don't want stuff that'll make you feel crappy. You want to keep the high going and you want to have energy for your next workout.
