    Default Cell Phone Question!

My bf wants one of those BlackJack phones, but when I went to the manufacturer's website to check out different styles, and hit 'shop' it took me to the ATT site. My question is, if you buy a cell phone off eBay or Amazon or from a person, not a store, can you use any phone for any service, or do certain brands only work with certain services?

P.S. We have Sprint Nextel (which sucks, but we're on contract..)

I'm pretty sure certain brands only work with certain services... But that's just from my experience.

^That sucks...Are BlackBerries the same as BlackJacks? What's close to a BlackJack? I don't understand the concept of PDAs ..

You can get an unlocked phone but they usually have problems and all the features won't work. Each company tends to lock their phones, so the iPhone only works right with AT&T, Pebl only works with T-Mobile, etc. You can take the risk with an unlocked phone but nothing protects you if something goes wrong with it.

I broke my contract to get away from Sprint and it was totally worth it. I still saved money after paying the fee for breaking the contract, and the customer service with Cingular/AT&T is so much better. Sprint is evil.

I found this article on Blackberry vs. Blackjack. The user comments are particularly helpful.

PDAs come in many, many forms. Originally they were just super-advanced digital organizers and address books, then people started mashing them up with phones.

    I KNOW they are!

I owe them like $260 because my cell hasn't been working for like 2 months so I didn't pay. When I called them, they told me I could end the contract for $400 ($200/line), or I could pay them $5/month until the contract expires (June 2007). The second option was much cheaper obviously, but still ridiculous!

I just got off the phone with Cingular/AT&T, and I'd have to pay a $1500 deposit to start 2 lines of service with them! I've never paid a deposit that big for anything! I'm not about to start now! And I already have AT&T for internet and home phone, so I figured it would be easier. Ahhhh so frustrated!!

A $1500 deposit? WTF? They weren't doing that when they were Cingular. That's awful.

Personally I think we were all a lot happier before cell phones were invented. Too bad we can't uninvent them and make them all disappear.

Sprint drives me nuts! I have to call them at least once a month for billing issues and I am lucky if I wait only 15 minutes for them to answer, I have waited hours before. I even wanted another line and went thru all the crap of 2 hours to get it started and a third phone and they never sent it to me! That was like 7 months ago and they r charging me 9.99 a month for it. Don't pick sprint!!

Yeah, it's $750 per line. I had service with Cingular 4 or 5 years ago and didn't have to pay that, and when I started with Sprint, I think I paid $30. I KNOW my credit has only improved since then, so I can't believe they're asking that. The chick on the phone said if I have service with them for a year, then I have history with them and won't have to pay so much, or possibly at all. But if I have them for a year, I already had to pay over a grand, fuck that!

PCQ.... If you buy a phone, unless you are really a techie and know what you are doing, plan to use it on the same company that it was designed for.

Unlocked phones can move between comanies that use the same type of transmission. However, most of the major companies use different systems (I'll spare you the technibabble, unless you really want the details).

Well I've decided to stick with Sprint until my contract is up, and just upgrade our phones (I need a new one, too, but definitely don't need a fancy PDA!) .. On the Sprint site, they show:

    Centro™ by Palm®
    IP-830W by Samsung®
    MOTO Q™ 9c by Motorola
    BlackBerry® Pearl™ 8130
    Treo™ 700wx by Palm
    Touch by HTC™
    Mogul™ by HTC
    i930 by Motorola

Many of them, like BlackBerry and Treo have several models, of course, but there's a lot to choose from. And honestly, my bf doesn't need a PDA, he just thinks they look cool. So I guess I have to choose from that list. If any of you have experience with any of these phones, let me know if they suck or what?!

My husband has the Motorola Q, and he likes it. It's basically a PDA and has lots of features. We're with verizon if that makes a difference though?

Some phones aren't compatible with different companies, depending on what kind of technology they use--CDMA versus GSM, if I recall correctly from my former life in telecom. For example, Cingular phones have SIM cards in them, but Verizon/Sprint phones don't, so you can't switch the same phone from one of those companies to the other. But I don't know how that works with PDAs--it may not even be applicable.

And yeah, unlocking a phone is sometimes a temporary fix (still not possible for the CDMA/GSM incompatibility) but you run the risk of not being able to use certain features on the phone like ringtones, picture messaging, etc and customer care can't do much for you either. Again, don't know how or if this applies to PDAs but it's the info I got!
