How do you do it properly? I want my hair to be thick, long, and oh-so healthy!
Get the ends trimmed frequently. Eat healthy, drink plenty of water and take your vitamins...aside from that...it's genetics.
Like Venus said, it's genetics that plays a big role.
Most adults actually have a 'cut off point'; a point where, no matter how long you wait, how well you maintain, your hair will not grow past that point. It's predetermined by genetics.
My point is about mid-back. I used to go crazy trying to grow my hair out, and it just REFUSED to grow any longer. I did some minor research on it, and found that most people have a point where the hair just won't grow any longer. It sucks.
Extensions are my friend if I need my hair longer.
How is your hair now exactly? If your hair is fine in texture naturally it won't become thick no matter what you do. I am fine in texture naturally and the only time my hair has ever "looked" thick is when I had extensions or used product.
If you want beautiful long, shiny, healthy hair the less you do to it the better off you are. That means no chemicals, heat or excessive product. Try to wash only every other day. If this is difficult for you then you can use baby powder between days to absorb some of the excess oil. If you can wash less than every other day that is a plus. Wear your hair loosely braided at night. Try to wear it up as much as possible. Basically don't do anything to it except brush it two or three times a day, wash and condition three times a week and put it up. Don't use the hair dryer or elastic rubber bands. Get yourself a decent paddle brush.
My hair totally does not grow past where it is in my avatar. That seems like an abnormally 'high' cut off point to me, but it's been years...I cut it pretty frequently, am not too mean to it, and am healthy. I'll keep trying, but dang it's annoying!

Good info, thanks everyone who posted. My hairdresser also recommended Hair Force, which looks like it's basically a billion% RDV of the B vitamins. Anyone have any recs on this product?
I've never had the patience to grow my hair past my shoulders so this is tough for me. I'm already doing a lot of things wrong--using my chi without heat protection, pulling my hair back with elastic bands, and not so much with the good nutrition or water. Yeah this is a wakeup call--I want long luxurious stripper locks!
Bioitin H2o and low maintenance styles.
Yea i got mine cut! Cut to long layers, she really messed up my ends, not to mention took too much off. My hair is still long but looks like shit. The front is too short, while the back is razored all over....i hate razor cuts. Heard it's not good for the hair shaft....don't know. But it shows on my hair as crap!
I want to get a few extensions in the back...but don't know where to get them.
Or let it grow. I'm a one length kinda person...i hate this cut.

Update: didn't wash my hair for 4 days (yum, right?), just now I gave it a gentle scrub in warm water with baby shampoo and a nice heavy-duty conditioner, will have to see my stylist about those split ends on Friday maybe.

You have to be insanely gentle with your hair if you want to grow it super long. Like, air drying, no bleaching, etc. Some people have to use very gentle products sans cones and sulphates. Often people with very long hair have to wear it up a lot to prevent damage.
Very few people have a terminal length (where it stops growing) above waist. What usuallly happens is that people unintentionally damage it, so it breaks off at the rate it grows.
MTG...I use it and it makes my hair grow 2 inches a month.
Now yes, it is marketed towards the horsies, but it was first made for humans. It stinks, but it WORKS.

pamela-- you were talking about buying hair online.

like this but not as expensive:
Aw, thanks!
I repeat what others have said - chuck your flat irons, your blow dryers, etc.
Read the back of all your products. If they have anything in them that ends in "cone", back away as fast as you can - they're likely (9/10) to ruin your hair. They'll fix it for a while but leave a residue that makes your hair chemically "need" the cones to look good - while also leaving a residue and weakening your hair.
I make all my own products (and sell them, if you see my sig) but if that isn't for you, try some JASON, suave, or aubrey organics. There's something cone/chemical free in every price range.
Treat your hair like delicate lace - protect it from hot showers. Sleep on a satin pillowcase. Wear your hair up as much as possible.
If you really want to grow your hair, don't get the extensions. Just wait it out. Regardless of how you get them put in, you WILL damage your hair. If you want waist length, you're looking at six years of length - so the hair at your scalp that gets glued or sewn then pulled out will have to manage to NOT break in six years after that kind of damage - not likely.
Best of luck, and anything else I can help with, let me know!

Great timing on this thread! I've been trying to grow my hair out foreverrrrrrr. (After having nice long hair for my whole life I did the "after-breakup haircut and color thing"...grrr). I've been getting extensions off and on throughout the last two years, because I think long hair just looks SO much better.
I'm at that point where my hair is shoulder-length and icky and I hate it! I just made an appointment to get it all chopped off again....
(what can I say, I'm a quitter)
So anyways, I'm at work last night, and this girl says to me.... "OMG I didn't recognize you! I'm used to your long hair.....wow you used to look so much hotter!"
UH YEAH.![]()
Haircut=canceled
So thanks for all the great advice!
Actually frequent trimming just makes your hair shorter. If you take good care of your hair: wear it up, oil it, treat it very gently, don't use any styling products or heat treatments there is no reason to ever cut your hair unless its too long. Just go through and cut out the split ends only once in a while.
Go to this forum its awesome!!! http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/index.php

Hmm well, the kind you can braid in yourself i guess. I have hair that was past my ass, and hit the salon...yep. And she cut my hair in these layers. It's growing out and at a very bad stage. The back is very long, the front and top is too damn short...what was i thinking????![]()
I'm pissed at myself. But it's slowly coming along now. It's like a friggin 70's Farah Fawcet cut in the front kind of. It sucks.
Thanks for the link...i need a few to braid in around the sides of my head to match the longer hair it seems.![]()
