class of '92 (yes, i'm old
)
i lived mostly on campus then and if you're a full-time student i would suggest the same (if financially possible).
if not, mass transit commuting from nj is probably your best option (an auto commute is just suicidal imo
).
buses can get real expensive real quick ($10~$20/day depending on the town serviced and bus company). subway costs on top of that ($5/day).
ferry rides are good ($5-round trip? plus taxi or subway on top) but you need to live in the appropriate neighborhoods on the nj side (and that can get $$$ for living costs/rent). e.g. hoboken, jersey city, edgewater, general bergen county places.
path train is probably your best bet though. (i think it's $4 roundtrip now? used to be $1/trip. plus subway costs.) cost wise and neighborhood pricing, i think that's your best bet.
cost of rent could run from $400~$$$ per month. i've heard of one bedrooms in my work town (kearny) going for $300~$400/month but that's just a bedroom afaik. but kearny (and surrounding towns) gives you access to the path train and newark's penn station.
i'd look on the star ledger and local newspapers (google check the towns and then search local papers) for rooms and such. i'd overlay a train map to see which towns are applicable. for example, south orange and millburn are applicable but livingston (my town) isn't, even though it's right next to them, due to the lack of train service.
allocate at least $500/month for rent imo. living expenses should rent $100/week for utilities and food. of course, those are subjective to the individual. good luck!
nyu's a great school. overpriced but great and fun!
