Default Food Stamps to a NonResident?

I can't find the answer I'm looking for....

Can I apply for and receive food stamps from the state of California even though I don't have residency? I have only been in CA for 2 months, but I will not be moving back to AZ.

Does that mean I am still an AZ resident until I have resided in CA for a year?

    It shouldn't be a problem.

Ahhh.... memories. I miss being on Food Stamps. If being poor is so bad why do they make the money all fun and colorful!?!?
    Mixed messages, anyone?

Food Stamps remind me of childhood.... gosh I'm weird!

I'm currently on "food benefits" as they call it now at least in Oregon. I have only lived in Oregon for about 3-4 months so far and they didn't say anything about it. I have an Oregon ID to prove that I live here now though and I've registered to vote here too. I don't know anything about California so I found this site to help..

    http://myfoodstamps.org/lsnc/index.html

Here's a pre-screening eligibility tool online that you can fill out and see if you're eligible before going down to an office..

LOL! Like monopoly money. We were on food stamps when I was younger too. They do remind me of childhood. Sorry op I don't have advice for you. Except, it would be worth it to apply and its such a big help to have them.

162 per month is a lot for a single person.

You must be a California resident to get California benifits = california i.d. or drivers licence, and sorry to disapoint you but food stamps are now in debit card form - no more pretty colors (at least this was the case when me and daughter were on them).

Money from the goverment each month to cover food expences. Can only be used on unprepared food. They determine how much you will get by family size and income.

I have a friend who got a food stamp card right after evacuating for Katrina in Boston. I think he had to get a Boston driver's license though.

BrunetteGoddess, have you considered looking into food giveaway, food bank, and pantry programs in your area?

Just in case you don't yet qualify for food stamps, that may be a viable option.

I can't imagine why any dancer would need food stamps. Naturally, not everyone claims their income, but I'm sure no one here would take advantage of the system (har har).

Are you not working right now?

^^^ dancers and food stamps ... a subject frequently discussed in the 'less than upper echelon' clubs in New York. Actually, a targeted enforcement effort has been underway for a while ... because eligibility for social welfare benefits really amounts to eligibility for the following benefits package ...

food stamps program - $150+ per month debit card + free raw foods if you want to go pick them up (the ever famous welfare cheese)

medicaid - 100% health cost coverage

HEAP - cash subsidies of $100+ per month paid by the state to your electricity / gas / heating oil supplier

PublicHousingAuthority - eligibility for a $500 a month market value apartment in a building / complex owned by the gov't, with actual rent charged being $200 a month or less (depends on amount of income claimed)

if you add up the 'equivalent' cash value of all of these benefits, it can easily approach $800 a month. Thus there are more than a few working dancers in NY who have not only chosen not to report their dancing incomes but have also signed up for these benefit programs. Granted that many of these girls are single moms with kids, and they do it for the medicaid health insurance coverage.

But if eventually busted, between the state of NY wanting repayment of fraudulently obtained benefits and the IRS/NY income tax people attempting to levee and collect 'estimated' back taxes, they are royally screwed. News reports also stated that the state of NY declared some of these busted single mom dancers as 'unfit mothers' and made their children 'wards of the state'. News reports also stated that some of the busted dancers did some jail time for 'welfare fraud' when they were unable to repay the state for benefits already received.

I think it's despicable to collect welfare when you don't really need it.

Medicaid is a different story, because I do think that all people have a right to healthcare. Even someone who makes a great living dancing might not be able to get medical insurance, especially if they have a pre-existing condition. And, of course, their kids shouldn't suffer because they can't provide.
