Default I think my immune system sucks.

I always seem to get sick more than anyone I know. If I get a cold, it lasts longer than most people's, but that's probably because of my allergies. I don't think I have a serious problem, though, because I haven't had any really serious illnesses. I'm a vegetarian who, admittedly, doesn't always eat in the most healthful ways (I can't help it! I'm usually too busy to cook, or I forget to eat until I'm starving) - therefore, my iron count is lower than normal, even though I take iron supplements every day. And I think I might be coming down with a cold, when I just had a cold, which turned into mono, less than two months ago! Argh! I'm taking vitamin c, along with a daily multi vitamin, and I'm starting to take echinacea. I've tried those Halls defense drops, which have vitamins, echinacea, and some other herbs, and I think they helped before, so I'm going to buy some tomorrow.

Anyone know of anything else that would help boost my immune system (besides eating better, which I am trying to do)? Especially with all the scary superbugs going around these days!

If you want to eat healthier and build your immune system, I recommend doing some investigating on your own. Books. It's not just about taking supplements. And if you're vegetarian, it's really important to keep everything balanced.

Check out some of David Cousens books. He promotes vegetarian lifestyles and he has great advice.

Mercola.com has great advice too. He's against veganism but you said you're vegetarian so ... I guess you still eat some animal products.

this is going to sound really stupid and simple and is not meant to be offensive, but

    WASH
    YOUR
    HANDS

i used to get sick literally 6 or more times a year. i always had good hygiene and washed my hands enough (i thought)..... i figured something must be wrong with my immune system.

but then i started a little "rule" with myself (after getting some REALLY bad virus that landed me in the ER)

never touch your eyes, nose, or mouth with your hands without washing them:
this means no biting your nails, no rubbing make up or sleep out of your eyes, etc.

never eat ANYTHING with your hands without washing them first:
this goes for allllllllll food. chips, candy, anything. don't let someone hand you candy and then pop it in your mouth.

i know i sound like a germaphobe and i am, a bit. i don't wash my hands 4893 times a day or anything.. just before they come into contact with my eyes/nose/mouth or before i eat -anything-.

say you go to work. how many people have touched the doors to your work before you? if just ONE of them had a cold or flu virus on their hands, it's now on yours.

10 minutes later a girl offers you some chips or a mint or something. you take it and eat it.

    virus ahoy!

anyway, as i said in the first place, i know it sounds common sense...
but once i really started sticking to it....
i get sick about 2 MAYBE 3 times a year ever since, which is much more "normal". i remember the first time i went 7 or 8 months without being sick once. i couldn't believe it. you can't prevent some stuff.. like getting sneezed on or strong (flu) viruses that linger in the air....

but MOST stuff is transmitted to you via your own hands.

    *steps off soapbox*

also: taking vitamins, eating yogurt, healthy diet in general... none of those things are a bad idea.

    ^^Hmmm... good advice.

I'm kind of a germaphobe too, and I do wash my hands a lot, but maybe I need to try to be even more of a soap-nazi. I almost always wash up before eating, but washing up before even touching the eyes, that does make sense, though I never think to do it. Although... that does make me wonder... if you're as clean as you can be and you're avoiding contact with germs as much as possible, how do you build up your immune system? I mean, don't you have to be exposed to some bugs to continue building up resistance? I think I might look that up online.

And I do need to make some lifestyle changes and eat better. I'd love to go vegan, but I know if I did that I'd have an even more difficult time eating healthy - I suck at planning out meals, but I really should start doing that. It's just hard being a student who doesn't have the money or time to thoughtfully plan meals out. Maybe at semester break when I have free time, I can force myself to plan things better.

Getting sick has nothing to do with how much you wash your hands. It has everything with your immune system. If you are not eating healthy and getting enough sleep, your immune system will be run down and unable to properly fight off any viruses/bacterias.

Loading up on antibacterial soap, hand sanitizers, and bleaching down your house will actually make you MORE sick than not. Look at the hospitals. They "disinfect" constantly, and it's one of the few places that you can go to pick up some horribly resistant germs.

I may be lucky. I work at a hospital and i am exposed to ALOT of crap in the air or cross contaminated i am sure. This helps me build up a resistance to many germs there. I get a good cold once yearly anf that is it, has been for years.

We need to be exposed to germs. I know this sounds odd, but the body will naturally build antibodies this way.

Also a good kick in the ass is eating foods for the immune system, sleeping, working out, and multi-vitamins! I try to do all this. So far for years it's gotta be the way i live that helps me along. And being exposed. I only wash my hands with hot water and soap, after shaking hands with a person or leaving the public restrooms.

See, that's what I was wondering about. We've gotta be exposed to some germs to build up antibodies, right? Seriously, some of the people I know who seem to have, well... not the best ideas of hygiene (as in, not always washing when they should, etc), always seem to get sick the least!

In the mean time, I am trying to force myself to get to bed early enough to get adequate sleep, plan meals better, and make sure I get some sort of excercise daily. Thanks for the info!

Grape fruits are very good in getting rid of allergies. Eat a good amount of it daily and you'll see the difference.

    that statement is COMPLETELY false.

i mean, how do you think most food borne illness starts? people not washing their hands. i don't care how great your immune system is, if you eat something that has feces on it (and it happens... often) you're pretty much going to get sick. same goes with transmitting bacteria/cross contamination with raw meats, etc.

it has a lot to do with washing your hands. ask any doctor. it ALSO has a lot to do with your immune system, so i do agree with you on that level.

also, as far as "building up your immunity" by not washing your hands:

i worked with kids for many years (before i started being a hand-wash-nazi) and i ALWAYS got sick. people told me all the time "your body will build immunity because you're being exposed so much"

    well it never seemed to.

washing your hands isn't going to make you get sick -more- the only thing it might do is make certain germs more resistant. the thought that you "need" to sick in order to be healthy is kind of backwards. you need to be exposed to things, yes, but it doesn't mean you shouldn't caution yourself.

besides, you'll get sick enough without washing your hands to give your immunity some excersize. you just won't get sick all the freaking time anymore.

    i'm just saying....
i am sick at least 1/2 as much as i used to be
and i've always been good about diet/vitamins/etc, so that hasn't changed.

plus, if being exposed builds immunity, i would have been the healthiest person a long time ago. since, i was sick constantly as a kid.

    and this is from wikipedia:

Killing germs on your hands decreases your immunity
    This is a myth

The skin on your body is covered with microorganisms. Our environment is contaminated with good and bad microorganisms. You cannot kill all of the microorganisms on your hands. Your large intestine contains large numbers of microorganisms. All of these sources of germs stimulate your immune response. CDC guidelines for health care workers call for alcohol rubs to be used 60 or more times a day between patients and after touching contaminated surfaces. Killing germs on your hands will not decrease your immunity but it will help prevent disease.

Eating well is important, yeah. I'm a clean freak too, but my colds didn't go away until I cut out junk food. Sugar is most important to avoid. Seriously, no colds in almost 2 years. And the people I live with do get sick, so I am exposed. I don't doubt that germs cause it, but a healthy immune system is also a factor.

    ^ absolutely.

being healthy to begin with it most important, but if you wash you wash your hands before eating, you are far less likely to pick up a virus.

esp considering that the stronger viruses are much easier to catch and harder to fight, you give your body a good shot at not having to deal with it by being a bit cautious.

Constant washing of hands does not prevent illness. Yes, washing your hands before you prepare foods/eat is one thing...to prevent transfer of food borne illness. But, do you really think that by being around people who cough, sneeze, etc that washing your hands is going to do anything? MOST colds, etc are airborne, so unless you pull a Michael Jackson and wear a mask, you walk out your door and you're exposed to viruses and bacterias no matter how clean your hands are.

You eat healthy, get enough sleep, stay hydrated and you'll notice that you feel better.

Washing your hands 40,000 times a day isn't going to change anything.

i never said washing your hands CONSTANTLY did anything, nor did i suggest doing so. at all.

i specifically said before eating or touching your eyes/nose.

being in the same room with someone who is coughing/sneezing and is sick is far less likely to transmit a virus to you than if you touch something they touched and then, say, lick your hand.

same as how making out with someone sick can get you sick a lot easier than just "being in the same room"

most cold viruses are transmitted via hand to mouth or hand to eye contact. look it up.

it has to do with how the droplets of whatever virus is it "stay in the air"... some viruses have very little or almost no "reach" or "staying power". you have to be pretty much sneezed on directly to get those viruses. there's also a "viral load" for each.. meaning that the amount of the virus you inhale/ingest/whatever has a lot to do with if you will develop symptoms or not.

others, like most flu viruses, have droplets that can stay in the room for hours and can reach a large radius. this is why they are so easily spread. so with those types, yes, the only way to ward them off is to have a good immune system.

this is why i said that, even with washing your hands, you will still get sick sometimes.

    just not nearly as much.

but what do millions of doctors and the cdc know.

besides, what HARM is going to do if she washes her hands before she eats and stops putting her fingers in her eyes/mouth or biting her nails?

    none.

also, you can get all sorts of stomach bugs from eating without washing your hands. bugs you -can't- get through air transmission. you probably wash your hands after going to the bathroom right? why? .... what do you think about touching a doorknob after someone who DIDNT wash their hands after going to the bathroom.

    you eat with those fingers
    you eat those germs

If you re-read my post, you'll see that I said "Getting sick has nothing to do with how much you wash your hands." I didn't say, "Don't ever need to wash your hands." Just that people who wash their hands every time they pass a sink aren't any healthier...they just have chapped hands.

Never did I say you couldn't get sick from NOT washing your hands.

That's called cross-contamination! Working at the hospital we have signs everyplace for staff to "wash their hands"! Not only in bathrooms on mirrors are they there, but in hallways as well.
You touch a desk a few minutes after a person with a virus did, you run the chance of getting that virus since we all tend to touch our mouths noses and eyes alot! Yes handwashing is very very very important. Getting coughed on is less likely to get you sick than touching something a sick person did.

But like VG says too much washing is no good either. I have washed at work to the point of getting very dry hands...Ouch!

    A. i quoted you directly

    and

    B. -i- never said washing your hands constantly did any good at all, which is why i was bringing it up in the first place.

    *SIGH*

i've said my peace and i have no hard feelings.

i just suggest that some of you do your own research. there's a lot of misinformation/myths/etc about this sort of thing.

you know, like the one about how you can get sick from cold weather.

anyway, ask your own doctor or read up about it on well known sites, such as the ones i posted.

I'm with you on this topic.

I'm in NYC, ride the subway a LOT and touch a lot of things other people have touched. I teach several fitness classes a day at dirty gyms and ... aside from washing my hands after going to the bathroom or maybe cooking, I don't wash all that often. And I NEVER use antibacterials. Never.

I don't remember the last time I was sick.

Germs can make you stronger only if you are genetically set up for that.

Some people have autoimmune disorders where they are lacking the parts of blood that let the body remember the illness. So surprise! Your body breaks down even though it's been exposed to that illness.
So for the average person, good for you for taking some germs for the team. But for those of us who already have problems, I'll stick to washing my hands frequently.

But on a side note, those dannin (Dannon? that yogurt brand) immune probiotic drinks helped me out a lot. Combine that with adequate sleep and lots of vitamins! Find a pill that works for you, and don't skimp on the vitamin C.

Keep in mind that most health plans are made for the average person, and none of us are truly average. Find something that works for you.

    And good luck

So for the average person, good for you for taking some germs for the team. But for those of us who already have problems, I'll stick to washing my hands frequently.

But on a side note, those dannin (Dannon? that yogurt brand) immune probiotic drinks helped me out a lot. Combine that with adequate sleep and lots of vitamins! Find a pill that works for you, and don't skimp on the vitamin C.

Keep in mind that most health plans are made for the average person, and none of us are truly average. Find something that works for you.

    And good luck
OK. Years ago I used to get sick a lot though.

I do pay attention to things like parasites, mold and fungus though. These things are detrimental to the immune system.

    Two great supplements are:

Oil of Oregano (good for eliminating internal fungus)
Black Wanut Hulls (mostly just for killing parasites)

are you my mom? She's obsessed with oregano oil! but it does help.

I take a blend of black walnut, cloves, and wormwood for parasites. Sometimes there's also male fern and other things in it. I do feel better (and fewer digestive problems!), and my breath smells like grandma's kitchen thanks to the cloves

i just suggest that some of you do your own research. there's a lot of misinformation/myths/etc about this sort of thing.

you know, like the one about how you can get sick from cold weather.

anyway, ask your own doctor or read up about it on well known sites, such as the ones i posted.
I'll second that...OMG, at work we hear it all the time. I got sick because i was outside and it's cold!

Well we get sick much more often during winter due to all of us being in close contact with each other, and we run the heat in homes, restaurants, movies etc, and germs thrive in heat, where cold (AC) kills them off. The virus is not out in the snow. It's in the heated biuldings we visit with others who already are sick. But too many will get a good summer cold. I hate the damn virus myself, so many germs that make us sick...my biggie once a year a cold of course followed by Strep. One Viral, one Bacterial...doc. says it's secondary...OKayyy. I don't know. I just want it gone...
