Well, the simple answer is that he does it because she puts up with it. Because he can.

    Amen to that!

Men only do what we let them. If she put her foot down he'd either shape up or leave. She's afraid he'll do the latter.

True. But in some societies it's commonplace for a man to have both a wife and a mistress. The two mourn at the same funeral, too. I say she goes out and gets herself a pool boy.

The vast majority of human beings are biologically wired for polygamy. He's doing this because he can, and because he enjoys it. However, human beings do have the power to choose monogamy for social reasons, and if she's not happy with the situation then she can leave. She chooses to stay so obviously she'd rather have this situation than the alternative. If she's choosing to stay in this relationship, then it's nobody else's business.

At no point does the original post say the wife is UPSET by this going on. Maybe it's okay with her.

I don't even understand the first sentence.

    Me neither. :X

But she did say that the wife "still thinks there is hope," so more than likely the wife is just a spineless pushover.

That was certainly my ex-wife's theory.
"He will come in one of the pre-chosen forms. During the rectification of the Vuldrini, the traveler came as a large and moving Torg! Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor! Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!"

This reminds me of a story I read a while back in my beloved news source: Chuck Shepherd's News of the Weird.

If you haven't heard of "I be concubining" you should read this brief tidbit.
    http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,258400,00.html

So, what's the verdict--is the wife upset with the situation or are you?

The main reason I'd say, is he's not getting enough (to men this means daily) sex, and the secondary reason is "because he can." They are also probably babies and scared about the pregnacny.

    Because he can.

AND because he is a selfish bastard. (unless there's an open relationship element to this)

There's a large element of truth in this. Biologically, we can perpetuate ourselves after death by having descendents.

The optimum stratety for a man is to get as many women pregnant as possible, so that he has as many descendents as possible.

The optimum strategy for a woman is to find the highest calibre man she can and have her children by him - this gives her children the best possible advantages in life - strength, intelligence, etc.

Not saying this is morrally justified, but sometimes we're driven by biological imperitives that are buried deep in the roots of our evolution.

Miabella doesn't believe in evolutionary psychology, as seen in our blue side thread.

That out of the way, the optimum strategy for a guy(and girl) changes depending on the situations. In many cases, monogamy is the best strategy(better 1 or 2 survive than none due to neglect, etc).

I think being married and having a mistress is kind of sleezy. I'd rather just not get married and just spread my seed around without the stigma of adultry.

Open relationships are a whole other bag of course, but I was never the type to bother to buy jumbo sized

Men will do what you let them get by with. You teach them how to treat you. Let them know you will roast their nuts on a spit and you'll suddenly get a lot more respect.

Gotta love it when women blame other women for the so-called man not keeping it in his pants.

I was doing all kinds of kama sutra things to my ex all day and night long. He still cheated...and came crying back to me after realizing the grass ISN'T greener. TOO BAD, MR SAD! I had found someone else and was happily boffing my new man several times a day like Jenna Jameson and HE'S gloriously satisfied. Had to thank him for messing up so I could find this one...

It's not quite as easy as that. There are powerful countervailing forces in natural selection.

For example, the situation with women is much more complicated. (Isn't it always? )

Women who are ovulating are three times more likely to stray from their marriage and cheat with a man who is more physically attractive to her.

During the rest of her cycle, she reverts to the man who is monogamous and is there to provide resources to her so her young will survive. In terms of natural selection, resource sharing and physical protection are the male's major contribution.

This is her optimum strategy to maximize the physical characteristics of her offspring, but also to ensure their survival.

One UK evolutionary biologist once theorized that if there were mandatory paternity tests in hospital delivery rooms, about 35% of the "fathers" would be in for one hell of a shock.

This is why cuckoldry (being married to an unfaithful wife) is the man's greatest nightmare, and why physical cheating drives guys completely insane. They can take just about anything else ("Just don't touch the dick.")

Women are the opposite and fear emotional cheating because emotional connections to others imply longer-term outside commitments that are a potential risk to the resources the man shares with her to ensure the survival of her children.

Men are not universally polygamous -- otherwise it's unlikely our species would have survived because of our extraordinarily long childhood periods where we require the resources and protection of our parents. Men as devoted fathers improve the chances of survivability, which is in the man's best genetic interest (as long as the children are his!), at least in terms of natural selection.

In strictly evolutionary (not social) terms, this guy has adopted an optimum strategy -- he has a (purportedly) faithful wife to guarantee reproduction and survival of his children, while also able to explore other women as alternative ways of propagating his genetic line.

    It's all because he can.

W/E. That's what I know to be true from the mouth of babes. It's true. You could have related your personal story w/o making it sound like I'm blaming other women.
